No one knows the origin of the hymn "
Fairest Lord Jesus", also known as "
Beautiful savior". It originated with the Roman Catholic Jesuits in Germany from the late 1600's. The melody is German from the 1800's. The German title is
"Schönster Herr Jesu" ≈ "Fairest Lord Jesus". One legend is that it was a 12th century German Crusader song - but the tune has no evidence prior to 1842.

Written down by German Jesuits (17th Century). Published in 1677 (in Germany). Joseph Seiss (1823-1904) did the popular arrangement.
The music is from a popular Silesian folk tune (1842) arranged by Richard Willis.
