Song: Stand up stand up for Jesus
by RS  admin@creationpie.com : 1024 x 640

1. Song: Stand up stand up for Jesus
The song "Stand up stand up for Jesus" was written by George Duffield, Jr., after the death of Dudley Tyng from a farm accident during the Great Revival of 1858. One of Tyng's last words to his father: "Tell my brethren of the ministry, wherever you meet them, to stand up for Jesus". Both Union and Confederate soldiers sang this song during the American Civil War.

Dudley Tyng preached on Exodus 10:11 right before his death. George Duffield based his funeral sermon and song on Ephesians 6:14. Music: Stand up stand up for Jesus

2. Verse 1
Stand up, stand up for Jesus
ye soldiers of the cross;
lift high his royal banner,
it must not suffer loss:

from vict'ry unto vict'ry
his army he shall lead,
'til ev'ry foe is vanquished,
and Christ is Lord indeed.

3. Motivation
Verse routeExodus 10:8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go? [kjv]
Verse route10:9 And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD. [kjv]
Verse route10:11 Not so: go now ye that are men, and serve the LORD; for that ye did desire. And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence. [kjv]

The setup for the motivation for the song "Stand up stand up for Jesus" are the verses where Moses asks Pharaoh to go and worship their God. Pharaoh will let a few men go but not the entire group.

Here then is the verse that was the motivation for the song "Stand up stand up for Jesus". The words are spoken by Pharaoh.

After this verse, the plague of locusts came.

12. Music: George Webb
George Webb wrote the music (often used), originally composed in 1837 for "Tis Dawn, the Lark is Singing", a song in a secular musical show.

13. History

The hymn was written in 1858, about three years before the start of the American Civil War in April 1861. We will see a difference between what Paul actually wrote and how the soldiers appeared to use the verse.

14. Human activities and God
Verse routeRomans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? [kjv]

Many use this verse as a "battle cry" or puffed-up-in-pride "badge of honor". Some pastors (and others) promote this misconception.
Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right. Abraham Lincoln (16th U.S. President)

If God is the primary customer, then the customer is always right.

15. Dissenters
Some people did not like parts of the song.

16. Verse 2
Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
the trumpet call obey;
forth to the mighty conflict
in this his glorious day:

ye that are men now serve him
against unnumbered foes;
let courage rise with danger,
and strength to strength oppose.

17. Verse 3
Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
stand in his strength alone;
the arm of flesh will fail you,
ye dare not trust your own:

put on the gospel armor,
each piece put on with pray'r;
where duty calls, or danger,
be never wanting there.

18. Verse 4
Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
the strife will not be long;
this day the noise of battle,
the next the victor's song:

to him that overcometh
a crown of life shall be;
he with the King of glory
shall reign eternally.
