Albam : An ancient cipher code
1. Albam : An ancient cipher code
2. Codes and ciphers
In the security field, the following are general terms.
A code substitutes words for other words.
A cipher changes letters to other letters.
There are known codes and ciphers in the Bible dating to 500-600 B.C.
3. Hebrew albam cipher
The Hebrew albam is a reciprocal substitution cipher where the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet are exchanged in a substitution cipher (shown with gray dotted line).

4. The name albam
Note that the two letters at each end of the alphabet are used to form the name of the cipher.

So 1 as "
alef", 12 as "
lamed", 2 as "
bet", and 13 as "
mem" (final form )are used to create the name "
albam".
5. English version of the Albam cipher
Here is the English version of the Albam cipher, using the same right-to-left ordering (since the code transposition does not depend on how the cipher is displayed here).

6. The anbo cipher
In this case, the word "
SAVANNAH" would be encoded as "
FNINAANU" and the cipher would be called "
ANBO" instead of "
albam".
S -- F
A -- N
V -- I
A -- N
N -- A
N -- A
A -- N
H -- U
Note how the "
A" and "
N" switch positions in this particular word.
Remember, the Hebrew alphabet does not have vowels but, of course, words are pronounced with vowels, so the English analogy of "
ANBO" is not very pronounceable.
