Exodus 18: Hierarchy as a man-made tree structure

1. Exodus 18: Hierarchy as a man-made tree structure

2. Fractal tree animation
Fractal tree animated
Information sign More: Fractal tree animation

3. Fractal tree animation
We think of the observable part of a physical tree as starting with a trunk at ground level and branching and branching until reaching the leaves at the top (or logically outer part) of a branch.

Note that the root system (not shown) appears as a tree in the opposite direction.

4. Hierarchy
Org chart 0A management hierarchy, as usually drawn, can be thought of as a tree with a root at the top with the boss and branching down through possibly many layer of management until the workers (not managers, by definition) are at the level of the leaves.

5. Computer trees
Org tree2The same organizational chart can be drawn as a computer tree where the root is at the top (of the paper) and grows downward, in contrast to real trees (where the root system grows downward under the ground).

Hierarchies as trees of nodes and edges are often used in computer science in the areas of algorithms, data structures, programming languages, etc.

6. Nodes and edges
Computer trees and graphs are collections of nodes (vertices) and edges (arcs) connecting those nodes.

7. Facebook graph
The Facebook graph is a data structure of users and who they know, are friends with, etc. The Facebook graph is huge, with hundreds of millions of nodes (people, groups, organizations, etc.) and billions of edges connecting those nodes.

8. Names
Mathematicians often call nodes vertices and edges arcs.

Computer scientists often like when names (as in variables) have the same number of letters. The words "node" and "edge" each have four letters. And the letter "v" is often used for "variables" so it is already taken as an abbreviation.

9. Undirected edge
Undirected edgeAn undirected edge (arc) connects two nodes (vertices) without a direction on the edge (arc).

In the Facebook graph, the "friend" relation goes both ways. Both sides need to agree or accept that relation. It is an undirected edge in the Facebook graph.

10. Directed edge
Directed edgeA directed edge (arc) connects two nodes (vertices) with a direction on the edge (arc).

In the Facebook graph, a "like" is a relation that goes one way. It is a directed edge. What is "liked" does not have to return the "like".

11. Moses
In many ways, Moses is a type of Jesus. Moses needs to "judge" his people - deciding on matters that cannot be resolved between individuals, etc.

12. Exodus 18:13
   Exodus 18:13
 All
KJV: And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

13. Moses as type of Jesus
Shallow 0Moses is using the same organizational style as Jesus. For more about the hierarchy in the "kingdom" see the following.

14. Vine and branches
Vine 0Jesus explains his hierarchy another way in John 15, where vines do not have branches like trees,

15. John 15:5
   John 15:5
 All
KJV: I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

16. Efficiency
In this world, however, efficiency considerations (not always the best reason) lead to a different organizational style as will be suggested by Jethro.

17. Exodus 18:14
Verse routeExodus 18:14 And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? [kjv]

Jethro was the father-in-law of Moses. After Moses brought his people out of Egypt, Jethro joined him.

Jethro had a solution to a problem that Moses had as judge of the people.

18. Exodus 18:14
   Exodus 18:14
 All
KJV: And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

19. Exodus 18:15
   Exodus 18:15
 All
KJV: And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:
Hebrew: ויאמר משה לחתנו כי יבא אלי העם לדרש אלהים׃
Greek: και λεγει μωυσης τω γαμβρω οτι παραγινεται προς με ο λαος εκζητησαι κρισιν παρα του θεου

20. Exodus 18:16
   Exodus 18:16
 All
KJV: When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

21. Exodus 18:17
   Exodus 18:17
 All
KJV: And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

22. Exodus 18:18
   Exodus 18:18
 All
KJV: Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
Clock: 9th o'clockJethro now gives some man-made advice to arrive at a more time-efficient way of doing things.

Discussion question: Provide some examples of when time-efficiency considerations cause problems.

23. Historical note
Ponzo convergenceOur modern overriding concern with time efficiency has roots in the railroad system in the mid-1800's. In order to have the trains run on "time" and to not collide with other trains, an exact time schedule was needed. This "exact" time schedule soon found its way into all other ways of life. Earth - animationFor centuries, an exact time system had been desired in order to have ships accurately determine their longitude. Now that exact time system became part of everyone's life - for better or worse.

24. Exodus 18:19
   Exodus 18:19
 All
KJV: Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
Hebrew: עתה שמע בקלי איעצך ויהי אלהים עמך היה אתה לעם מול האלהים והבאת אתה את הדברים אל האלהים׃
Greek: νυν ουν ακουσον μου και συμβουλευσω σοι και εσται ο θεος μετα σου γινου συ τω λαω τα προς τον θεον και ανοισεις τους λογους αυτων προς τον θεον

25. Exodus 18:20
   Exodus 18:20
 All
KJV: And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

26. Exodus 18:21
   Exodus 18:21
 All
KJV: Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

27. Exodus 18:22
   Exodus 18:22
 All
KJV: And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

28. Exodus 18:23-25
Verse routeExodus 18:23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace. [kjv]
Verse route18:24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said. [kjv]
Verse route18:25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. [kjv]
Verse routeχιλιαρχουςεκατονταρχουςπεντηκονταρχουςδεκαδαρχους [lxx]

Jethro carefully conditions his advice on a premise "if God command thee so".

Moses will do what Jethro suggests. Where can we find that God commanded Moses to do it so?

29. Exodus 18:23
   Exodus 18:23
 All
KJV: If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

30. Exodus 18:24
   Exodus 18:24
 All
KJV: So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

31. Exodus 18:25
   Exodus 18:25
 All
KJV: And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
In the above verse, we have the hierarchy being created.

32. Democracy
Some use the above verse as part of the idea of democracy, which, in theory, has power coming bottom-up from the people instead of top-down from a dictator.

33. Exodus 18:26-27
Verse routeExodus 18:26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. [kjv]
Verse route18:27 And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land. [kjv]

34. Exodus 18:26
   Exodus 18:26
 All
KJV: And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

35. Exodus 18:27
   Exodus 18:27
 All
KJV: And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

36. Inferred examples
Obviously this is not the first time that such a hierarchy of human management had been created. It is inconceivable that the Tower of Babel, the Pyramids, etc., could have been created without such a human organization. But this appears to be the first time in the Bible that it is stated in detail and from inception.

An interesting part here is that what it replaced models the hierarchy of Jesus (and God) while what it established was a hierarchy established by humans - for better or worse.

37. Temple hierarchy
The temple hierarchy tree has its roots, so to speak, in the innovation suggested by Jethro to Moses.

God does give specific commands for this temple hierarchy - a future topic.

At human hierarchy, such as the temple system, grew and expanded to be quite complex. So much so that Jesus has many criticisms about that system.

Here is how a human hierarchy system happens in a bottom-up manner.

38. Start with a collection of people
Bottom up 0Start with a collection of people.

39. Organize locally
Bottom up 1These people organize into small groups.

40. Organize more
Bottom up 2These groups now organize more.

41. Keep on going
Bottom up 3A leader is at the top. Here, four levels are shown.

42. Variations
There are many variations on this idea that do not fit exactly into this idealized model.

Another way is the top-down method that starts with a leader who finds others to find other, etc.

43. Start with a leader
Top down 0

44. Find followers
Top down 1The leader finds some followers.

Imagine a multi-level marketing scheme where those who sell make more if they find followers who can also sell, etc.

45. Find more followers
Top down 2

46. Find more followers
Bottom up 3This is how multi-level marketing works. It is the idea behind a pyramid scheme where the system collapses when there are not enough people left at the leaves.

The limiting factor in other examples is when there are no more followers to be found.

47. Consequences
Hierarchies of people tend to evidence certain issues.

Each part of a people hierarchy starts, in general, to have their own best interests as a goal and not the best interests of the organization. People, due to laziness, etc., will actually use other people to further their own interests (usually for not good or bad purposes).

The effect of this is what is sometimes called the "deep state" even though the principle becomes an integral part of any large human organization.

48. Matthew 13: Third kingdom parable: mustard seeds and trees
Verse routeMatthew 13:31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: [kjv]
Verse route13:32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. [kjv]

Tree with twigs - no fruit
The "mustard seed" :
The "birds" do not (usually) nest in small bushes. Are the "birds" good? What is a "mustard seed"? What does a "tree" represent?
Information sign More: Matthew 13: Third kingdom parable: mustard seeds and trees

49. Matthew 13:4,19 Birds and the evil one
At the request of the disciples, Jesus provides the code-word meaning of the "birds" or "fowls" as those of the "wicked one". This happens when one does "not understand" as in "deception" (including self-deception).

Verse routeMatthew 13:4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: [kjv]
Verse route13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. [kjv]

The "catcheth away" is related to the word for "rapture". The KJV (King James Version) translates as "evil" or "wicked" the Greek word that means "oppression" or "oppressor".
Information sign More: Matthew 6: The missing part worked out for the birds
Information sign More: Matthew 10: Taking care of the sparrows
Information sign More: Crying wolf for the search and seizure of the rapture
Information sign More: Overly burdened in the cares and concerns of evil
Information sign More: Evil training is toilsome work: no pain no gain

50. Matthew 13:4
   Matthew 13:4
 All
KJV: And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
Greek: και εν τω σπειρειν αυτον α μεν επεσεν παρα την οδον και ηλθεν ελθοντα τα πετεινακαι κατεφαγεν αυτα
Latin: et dum seminat quaedam ceciderunt secus viam et venerunt volucres et comederunt ea
Wessex: & þa þa he seow. sume hye feollen wið weig. & fugeles comen & aeten þa.
Wycliffe: And while he sowith, summe seedis felden bisidis the weie, and briddis of the eir camen, and eeten hem.
Tyndale: And as he sowed some fell by ye wayessyde and the fowlles came and devoured it vp.
Russian: и когда он сеял, иное упало при дороге, и налетели птицы и поклевали то;

51. Matthew 13:19
 All
KJV: When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

52. Organizational birds
The "birds" or "fowls" are or are of the "evil" or "wicked" one that take away what was sown from those who do not understand. The KJV translates as "evil" or "wicked" the Greek word that means "oppression" or "oppressor".
Information sign More: Overly burdened in the cares and concerns of evil
Information sign More: Evil training is toilsome work: no pain no gain
Any large organizational structure of humans has many "birds" that come and pick what they can from that part of the organization, finding a place in the organization in which to nest.

53. John 19:10-11
Verse routeJohn 19:10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? [kjv]
Verse routeεξουσιαν … [gnt]
Verse route19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. [kjv]
Verse routeεξουσιανανωθεν … [gnt]

Another issue is that what started as a cooperative way to organize might give the overall leader (and sub-leaders) enough power that the rights of those at the bottom can be ignored where the interests of the leader (and sub-leaders) take priority.

Pilate understood this hierarchy of power when Jesus talked about it.

54. John 19:10
   John 19:10
 All
KJV: Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

55. John 19:11

KJV: Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

56. Comparison and question
Info LetterThe Roman power went from top to bottom. The primary question from what has been discussed is the following. Discussion question: Is the "church" as envisioned by Jesus to be more of a flat organizational structure or a deep and extensive organizational structure. Explain.

57. Structure comparison
Jesus shallow structure - rock Human deep structure - sand
Shallow 0 Org tree2
Vine 0 Tree with twigs - no fruit
The deep tree structure of the Temple started with Moses on the advice of Jethro. By the time of Jesus it was a huge tree of compulsive rules and regulations.
Information sign More: Some shallow and yet deep ideas about organizational structure

58. Discussion question
Discussion question: How important is it that church structures be small and not large?

What happens when a church gets too large - either a single church or a denomination?

59. Scalability and conflict
The Dunbar number of about 150 appears to limit the human size of an organization where everyone can know everyone else.

Dunbar's informal definitions (from the 1990's) is "the number of people you would not feel embarrassed about joining uninvited for a drink if you happened to bump into them in a bar.".
Information sign More: Scalability and conflict

60. Hierarchy
The English word "hierarchy" comes through French from Latin from the Greek. The "h" was re-added in the late Middle Ages due to influence from the classical period (of Latin and Greek).

The nuance of the original Greek meaning had to do with (spiritual) superiority as part of what we today call a "hierarchy".

The word "hieroglyphics" from the Greek meaning "holy writing", is a word not found in the Bible.
As computers were becoming more prevalent, in the late 1980's, a common analogy of the hierarchy of the select group of computer professionals running the expensive mainframes was that of the "ivory tower". This included the idea of those professionals being aloof and secluded from the practical needs of those who asked for their services.

This is somewhat similar to the temple when Jesus walked the streets of Jerusalem and the surrounding area.

Sometimes the ivory tower is specific to an area, such as the "ivory tower of academia".

To some, this brings to bind the Tower of Babel in the Old Testament where the languages were confused.

61. Genesis 11:6 Organizational structure
Verse routeGenesis 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. [kjv]
Verse routeχειλος … [lxx]

Building a tower of bricks to reach the heavens is not very practical. And, by all indications, that was not the intention.

Organizing large numbers of people to accomplish a goal requires a lot of "middle management" to command and control the vast number of people, material, resources, etc., to accomplish tasks.

How do these goals contrast with that of being a simple gardener taking care of a little piece of land?

62. Genesis 11:6
   Genesis 11:6
 All
KJV: And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

63. John 18:19
Verse routeJohn 18:19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. [kjv]
Verse routeαρχιερευς … [gnt]
Verse routepontifex … [v]

In the GNT (Greek New Testament), the Greek words for "hierarchy" as in "high priest" are in the opposite order.

64. John 18:19
   John 18:19
 All
KJV: The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

65. Colossians 4:13 Holy city
Verse routeColossians 4:13 For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis. [kjv]
Verse routeιερα πολει [gnt]

The Greek city name "Hierapolis" means "holy city". Colossae, to which Paul's letter to the Colossians was written, was near to both Hierapolis and Laodicea.

66. Colossians 4:13
 All
KJV: For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis.
Wycliffe: And Y bere witnessyng to hym, that he hath myche trauel for you, and for hem that ben at Loadice, and that ben at Ierapolim.

67. Revelation 3:14
Verse routeRevelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; [kjv]

Hierapolis was near Laodicea (mentioned here) and Sardus, both mentioned in Revelation 3.

68. Revelation 3:14
 All
KJV: And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

69. Zesty hot and frigid cold
Verse routeRevelation 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. [kjv]
Verse routeεργαψυχροςζεστοςψυχροςζεστος [gnt]
Verse routefrigiduscalidusfrigiduscalidus [v]
Verse route3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. [kjv]
Verse routeχλιαροςζεστοςψυχροςστοματος … [gnt]

Hot or cold or elseJesus would prefer that the church be either "hot" or "cold" rather than "lukewarm" (neither "hot" nor "cold", shown as "?"). In this case, both "hot" and "cold" are good (e.g., refreshing).
The ancient Greek word "ζεστός""seethed, boiled, hot" and is the source of the English word "zesty".

The ancient Greek word "ψυχρός""cold, frigid, cold-hearted, lifeless, ineffectual"

Is there a pattern to how "hot" and "cold" are used in the Bible as far as being "good", "bad", etc.?
Information sign More: Zesty hot and frigid cold

70. Meetings
From working in organizations from very small to very large, my experience is that very small organizations have few meetings and those are kept short and to the point. That is, the person having the meeting is personally paying for every minute that everyone is attending. In larger organizations, there are many meetings that have very little value and the manager having the meeting is not personally paying in any real sense for people to be there.
