Words: ψηφιζει ψηφισατω=1 ψηφον=3
|
The ancient Greek word
"ψῆφος" ≈ "pebble, counter, vote" and many variations of meaning having to do with a
"vote" where a
"pebble" was used to
"vote" by placing it in a container. Unmarked would use two containers. Marked would use one container. Often, a lamp-stand was used where the (empty of oil) lamp bowel was used to collect the
"pebbles".
"ψηφίζω" ≈ "calculations (abacus), cast one's vote" and many definition variations having to do with voting.
"ψηφοποιός" ≈ "rigging the vote" and, literally, "make a pebble".
6. Counting the vote cast
Linguistically, the sounds "
pse-phos" and "
ce-phas" (soft "
c") as in "
see-phas" are very similar.
Modern (and ancient)
democracy is based in the idea of voting, with origins in the democratic ideas of Greece.
The English word "
vote" comes from the Latin
"votum" ≈ "vow, wish, promise".
The act of voting involves some form of counting and has taken many forms over the ages.
The root «
ψήφος» appears in the
LXX (Septuagint) and
GNT (Greek New Testament) and is also related to the word for "
stone".
7. Modern Greek
8. Petrified stones and rocks
John 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. [kjv]
ηγαγεν αυτον προς τον ιησουν εμβλεψας αυτω ο ιησους ειπεν συ ει σιμων ο υιος ιωαννου συ κληθηση κηφας ο ερμηνευεται πετρος [gnt]
… Cephas … Petrus [v]
The Latin
"cephas" ≈ "stone, rock", originally starting with a "
k" sound, comes from the Ancient Greek
"κήφας" (KEE-fas) ≈ "stone, rock" which comes from the Hebrew/Aramaic word
"כיפא" (keph) ≈ "rock".
John, who appears to think as a modern computer scientist in many ways, picks up on the relevance and importance of explicitly recording the double meaning. The word "
hermeneutics" comes from the ancient Greek word
"ἑρμηνεύς" ≈ "interpreter" as to the meaning of something.
9. Luke 14:28 Count the cost
Luke 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? [kjv]
τις γαρ εξ υμων θελων πυργον οικοδομησαι ουχι πρωτον καθισας ψηφιζει την δαπανην ει εχει εις απαρτισμον [gnt]
10. Luke 14:28
KJV: For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
Greek: τις γαρ εξ υμων θελων πυργον οικοδομησαι ουχι πρωτον καθισας ψηφιζει την δαπανην ει εχει τα προς εις απαρτισμον
11. Acts 19:19 Curious arts
Acts 19:19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. [kjv]
ικανοι δε των τα περιεργα πραξαντων συνενεγκαντες τας βιβλους κατεκαιον ενωπιον παντων και συνεψηφισαν τας τιμας αυτων και ευρον αργυριου μυριαδας πεντε [gnt]
Here, as part of a larger word involving «
συγ» as "
together", we have the concept of numbering or counting.
Here again we have the concept of numbering or counting.
12. Acts 19:19
KJV: Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Greek: ικανοι δε των τα περιεργα πραξαντων συνενεγκαντες τας βιβλους κατεκαιον ενωπιον παντων και συνεψηφισαν τας τιμας αυτων και ευρον αργυριου μυριαδας πεντε
13. Acts 26:10
Acts 26:10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. [kjv]
ο και εποιησα εν ιεροσολυμοις και πολλους τε των αγιων εγω εν φυλακαις κατεκλεισα την παρα των αρχιερεων εξουσιαν λαβων αναιρουμενων τε αυτων κατηνεγκα ψηφον [gnt]
Here, Paul gave his
"voice" against them, as in he gave is
"vote" against them.
14. Acts 26:10
KJV: Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.
Greek: ο και εποιησα εν ιεροσολυμοις και πολλους τε των αγιων εγω εν φυλακαις κατεκλεισα την παρα των αρχιερεων εξουσιαν λαβων αναιρουμενων τε αυτων κατηνεγκα ψηφον
15. Revelation 2:17 White stones
Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. [kjv]
ο εχων ους ακουσατω τι το πνευμα λεγει ταις εκκλησιαις τω νικωντι δωσω αυτω του μαννα του κεκρυμμενου και δωσω αυτω ψηφον λευκην και επι την ψηφον ονομα καινον γεγραμμενον ο ουδεις οιδεν ει μη ο λαμβανων [gnt]
The word «
ψηφον» appears several times in Revelation.
In Revelation, does the "
white"
"stone" and in the
"stone" have something to do with
"vote" or
"count" or
"numbering"? Does it have anything to do with the authentication codes that appear to be hidden within the letters to the seven churches (as a form of steganography)?
16. Revelation 2:17
KJV: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Greek: ο εχων ους ακουσατω τι το πνευμα λεγει ταις εκκλησιαις τω νικωντι δωσω αυτω φαγειν απο του μαννα του κεκρυμμενου και δωσω αυτω ψηφον λευκην και επι την ψηφον ονομα καινον γεγραμμενον ο ουδεις εγνω οιδεν ει μη ο λαμβανων
17. Steganography: hidden messages
Steganography is the use of hidden messages as a secret code. An observer may not even know that a secret code is being used.
The word "
steganography" comes from the Ancient Greek «
στεγανός» means a cover or roof and «
φράφω» has to do with writing, as in "
graphics".
The dinosaur called a "
stegosaurus" is named, in part , for the spikes on the spine that, when flattened, appear to look like tiles on a "
roof".
18. Revelation 13:18 Number of the beast
Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. [kjv]
ωδε η σοφια εστιν ο εχων νουν ψηφισατω τον αριθμον του θηριου αριθμος γαρ ανθρωπου εστιν και ο αριθμος αυτου εξακοσιοι εξηκονταεξ [gnt]
The verse after the "
mark" of the "
beast" contains the well-known "
number" of the "
beast". Many who have not read nor studied the Bible have heard of the number "
666" and the "
mark" of the "
beast".
"ψῆφος" ≈ "pebble, counter, vote" and many variations of meaning having to do with a "vote" where a "pebble" was used to "vote" by placing it in a container, sometimes an oil lamp (without the oil) on a "lamp stand"
"ψηφίζω" ≈ "calculations (abacus), cast one's vote" and many definition variations having to do with voting.
"ψηφοποιός" ≈ "rigging the vote" and, literally, "make a pebble".
The word used for
"count" often used for
"vote" using a
"pebble". It is not common and can be a play on words. The Greek word translated as
"number" is that of
"reckoning" as in
"accounting".
English: ... count the number ...
Greek: ... ψηφισατω τον αριθμον ...
Greek: ... ψηφι σατω τον αριθμον ... (play on words)
English: ... vote sato- tan ... (play on words)
English: ... vote Satan ... (play on words)
Jesus uses similar play on words with
Satan in other places.

It is unclear what the word «
ψηφισμα» is in the
KJV (King James Version). It might be "
Nisan" (one of the months of the Jewish year).
21. Exodus 4:25
KJV: Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.

And he made a decree in the twelfth year of the reign of Artaxerxes, and cast lots daily and monthly, to kill in one day the race of Mardochaeus: and the lot fell on the fourteenth day of the month which is Adar. [bs3]
The usage here appears to be that of a
"decree".
23. Esther 3:7
KJV: In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.

πως αμαν αμαδαθου ο μακεδων επολεμει αυτους καθως εθετο ψηφισμα και κληρον αφανισαι αυτους [lxx]
showing how Aman the son of Amadathes the Macedonian fought against them, how he made a decree and cast lots to destroy them utterly; [bs3]
Note that the word for "
Agagite" appears to be «
μακεδων» which appears to have something to do with "
Macedonia".
25. Esther 9:24
KJV: Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;

και εξεβαλεν ψηφω οδοντας μου εψωμισεν με σποδον [lxx]
And he has dashed out my teeth with gravel, he has fed me with ashes. [bs3]
The modern Greek word "δόντι" (THON-tee) ≈ "tooth", from which we get "dental".
Another modern Greek word is "οδούς" (o-THUS) ≈ "tooth".
27. Lamentations 3:16
KJV: He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
Hebrew: ויגרס בחצץ שני הכפישני באפר׃
Greek: και εξεβαλεν ψηφω οδοντας μου εψωμισεν με σποδον
Brenton: And he has dashed out my teeth with gravel, he has fed me with ashes.
28. Earthen vessels
The concept of voting in ancient Greece often had to do with using pieces of pottery vessels.
In one form of voting, Ancient Greece had a custom whereby a yearly vote was taken and whoever got the most votes, would be banished from the city for a period of time. How might that work today with the politics of today? Citizens would vote by inscribing the desired name on a piece of broken pottery. The Greek word for a these "
earthen vessels" was
"οστρακίνοις" (o-stra-KEE-nees) ≈ "earthen vessels". From this concept, we get the English word "
ostracize". Does the concept of "
ostracize" fit into any of the mentioned verses?
Consider the following Bible verses and the use of terms for "
earthen vessels" or "
potter's vessel". Do you see any other special meanings?
29. Jeremiah 19:1
Jeremiah 19:1 Thus saith the LORD, Go and get a potter's earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests; [kjv]
