Revelation 9:1-12 Woes from the bottomless pit
1. Revelation 9:1-12 Woes from the bottomless pit
2. Revelation 9:2
Revelation 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. [kjv]
και ηνοιξεν το φρεαρ της αβυσσου και ανεβη καπνος εκ του φρεατος ως καπνος καμινου μεγαλης και εσκοτωθη ο ηλιος και ο αηρ εκ του καπνου του φρεατος [gnt]
… puteum abyssi … sol … aer … [v]
This word «
φρεαρ» is the "
bottomless pit" in Revelation, literally the "
pit of the abyss". There are some other interesting words in this verse.
The Latin word "caminus" ≈ "furnace, forge, hearth" from which comes the English word "chimney".
The Latin word "sol" ≈ "sun"
The Latin word "aer" ≈ "air"
The modern Greek word "κάμινος" (KA-mee-nos) ≈ "furnace" which is the source of the Latin and English words.
The modern Greek word "καμινάδα" (ka-mee-NA-tha) ≈ "chimney".
The modern Greek word "ήλιος" (EE-lee-os) ≈ "sun" from which comes the English prefix "helio-".
The modern Greek word "αέρας" (a-EH-ras) ≈ "air" from which comes the English word "air".
3. Revelation 9:2
KJV: And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
Greek: και ηνοιξεν το φρεαρ της αβυσσου και ανεβη καπνος εκ του φρεατος ως καπνος καμινου μεγαλης και εσκοτισθη εσκοτωθη ο ηλιος και ο αηρ εκ του καπνου του φρεατος
Latin: et aperuit puteum abyssi et ascendit fumus putei sicut fumus fornacis magnae et obscuratus est sol et aer de fumo putei
4. The bottomless pit
What exactly is a "
bottomless pit"? The modern Greek word
"άβυσσος" (A-vees-sos) ≈ "abyss"is used here and was translated into "
bottomless pit" in the
KJV (King James Version) all
7 times in Revelation.
In
2 places (Rev 9:1 and 9:2) the word with the "
abyss" is the modern Greek word
"φρέαρ" (FREH-ar) ≈ "pit, well" so the "
abyss pit" is used in the other
5 places, as if "
abyss" means "
bottomless" as in, literally, the "
pit of the abyss".
Does adding the "
bottomless" in the other
5 places constitute a forbidden "
addition" to the book?
The Greek word "
φρέαρ" is related to the Latin word
"feveo" ≈ "hot" as in "
fever" and to the English words "
burn" and "
brew" and the German word
"brennen" ≈ "burn".
5. Revelation 9:1
Revelation 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. [kjv]
και ο πεμπτος αγγελος εσαλπισεν και ειδον αστερα εκ του ουρανου πεπτωκοτα εις την γην και εδοθη αυτω η κλεις του φρεατος της αβυσσου [gnt]
… clavis putei abyssi [v]
… keye … pit of depnesse … [wy]
… bottomlesse pytt. [ty]
Wycliffe uses the term "
pit of depnesse" as in "
pit of deepness" and not "
bottomless".
There appears to be a difference between being "
deep" and having no "
bottom". Technically, a "
pit" in the center of the earth has no "
bottom" and is not "
deep" but a "
deep" pit elsewhere would have a "
bottom".
6. Revelation Bottomless pit
[ty]
20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. [kjv]
και ειδον αγγελον καταβαινοντα εκ του ουρανου εχοντα την κλειν της αβυσσου και αλυσιν μεγαλην επι την χειρα αυτου [gnt]

The
"key" to the bottomless pit is
singular,
not plural, in two verses in Revelation. The Latin word
"clavis" ≈ "key" is the source of the English musical term
"clef".
7. Revelation 9:1
KJV: And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
Greek: και ο πεμπτος αγγελος εσαλπισεν και ειδον αστερα εκ του ουρανου πεπτωκοτα εις την γην και εδοθη αυτω η κλεις του φρεατος της αβυσσου
Latin: et quintus angelus tuba cecinit et vidi stellam de caelo cecidisse in terram et data est illi clavis putei abyssi
Wycliffe: And the fyuethe aungel trumpide; and Y say, that a sterre hadde falle doun fro heuene in to erthe; and the keye of the pit of depnesse was youun to it.
Tyndale: And the fyfte angell blewe and I sawe a stare fall from heven vnto the erth. And to him was geven the kaye of the bottomlesse pytt.
8. Revelation 20:1,1,3,3 Bottomless pit
Revelation 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. [kjv]

20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. [kjv]
και εβαλεν αυτον εις την αβυσσον και εκλεισεν και εσφραγισεν επανω αυτου ινα μη πλανηση ετι τα εθνη αχρι τελεσθη τα χιλια ετη μετα ταυτα δει λυθηναι αυτον μικρον χρονον [gnt]
And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. [kjv]
και εβαλεν αυτον εις την αβυσσον και εκλεισεν και εσφραγισεν επανω αυτου ινα μη πλανηση ετι τα εθνη αχρι τελεσθη τα χιλια ετη μετα ταυτα δει λυθηναι αυτον μικρον χρονον [gnt]

11. Revelation 9:3 Locusts and scorpions
Revelation 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. [kjv]
και εκ του καπνου εξηλθον ακριδες εις την γην και εδοθη αυταις εξουσια ως εχουσιν εξουσιαν οι σκορπιοι της γης [gnt]
The Greek word used by Paul for "
sting" is used in Revelation 9 as the sting of a "
scorpion". Consider the following verse. What might the "
scorpions of the earth" be?
literal meaning - scorpion insect
figurative meaning - weapons system (e.g., attack helicopters)
It is not clear what as to what the "
locusts of the earth" refer.
literal meaning - locust insect
figurative meaning - biological attack

15. Revelation 9:5 Five months of torment
Revelation 9:5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. [kjv]
και εδοθη αυταις ινα μη αποκτεινωσιν αυτους αλλ ινα βασανισθησονται μηνας πεντε και ο βασανισμος αυτων ως βασανισμος σκορπιου οταν παιση ανθρωπον [gnt]

Greek: και ειχον ειχαν τριχας ως τριχας γυναικων και οι οδοντες αυτων ως λεοντων ησαν
23. Armored forces and panzer tanks
Today, armored forces are associated with battle tanks. The word "
tank" comes from a simple water tank as that was a
code word used for this weapon during development in World War I. A
code word is a word that is replaced with another word to get the (hidden) meaning.
The old German word
"panzer" ≈ "shield, armor" became associated with the German battle tanks during World War II. In the 1970's, a West German battle tank was the Leopard 1 tank, produced by Porsche. The updated tank today is the Leopard 2.
24. Revelation 9:9 Breastplates and thoraxes
Revelation 9:9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. [kjv]
και ειχαν θωρακας ως θωρακας σιδηρους και η φωνη των πτερυγων αυτων ως φωνη αρματων ιππων πολλων τρεχοντων εις πολεμον [gnt]
… Panzer … Panzer… [lu]
That "
panzer" armor was originally a "
breastplate". The Greek term was used by Paul in Ephesians.
The ancient Greek word "θώραξ" ≈ "breastplate"
The modern Greek word "θώρακας" (THO-ra-kas) ≈ "chest, thorax".
In English, the "
thorax" is the middle part of an insect or the chest cavity of a human or animal.
25. Revelation 9:9
KJV: And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.

Spanish: y tenían corazas como corazas de hierro; y el ruido de sus alas era como el estruendo de muchos carros de caballos corriendo a la batalla.

… Panzer … Panzer… [lu]
Some people interpret the "
sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle." as the sound of, say, a
helicopter.
The English word "
helicopter" comes from the Greek word for "
helix".
Waltzing out of chains [Helix]
