3. The magi and the rab-mag
Jeremiah, in Jeremiah 39:3 and 39:13 uses the Hebrew term
"rab-mag" for the head of what in Babylon were called the
"magi". Members of this
"magi" group would visit Herod and the baby Jesus in the Christmas story in Matthew 2 about 600 years later. The
LXX (Septuagint) in Daniel uses the term for the
"magi" as
"astrologers" eight times some centuries earlier.
Herodotus in about 400 B.C., and other Greek writers, mention the
"magi" as a hereditary power group in Babylon/Persia. One of their skills was the interpretation of dreams.
4. Matthew 2:1,7,16 Magi
Matthew 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, [kjv]
2:7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. [kjv]
2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. [kjv]

10. Acts 8:9-11 Sorcerers in Acts
Acts 8:9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: [kjv]
8:10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. [kjv]
8:11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. [kjv]
In Acts, the Greek term for the
"magi" is used for a
"sorcerer" in
four verses.
11. Acts 8:9
KJV: But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

14. Acts 13:6-8 Elymas
Acts 13:6 And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-jesus: [kjv]
13:7 Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. [kjv]
13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. [kjv]
Elymas has the name of a
"magician" or a
"corrupter", possibly from the Arabic
"alim" for
"learned" or
"wise".
From two verses earlier, it appears that
Elymas is also known as "
Bar-Jesus" or "
Βαριεσοῦ" or "
Bar-Shuma" in the Aramaic. The Aramaic prefix "
bar" means "
son of".
15. Acts 13:6
KJV: And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-jesus:

Wycliffe: But Elymas witche withstoode hem; for his name is expowned so; and he souyte to turne awei the proconsul fro bileue.

In Jeremiah 39:3 and 39:13, Jeremiah uses the Hebrew term
"rab" "mag" for the head of what in Babylon were called the
"magi". The
LXX has only the first of the two verses.
32. Jeremiah 39:3

34. Herodotus: Magi and dreams
Herodotus, a writer of the history of Greece and much of what we know of ancient Persia, wrote of the
"magi" as a hereditary power group in Babylon who could interpret
"dreams", here as a
"reasoning" that has been "
foretold".
English:
If the boy is alive, said the Magi, and has been made king without premeditation, then be confident on this score and keep an untroubled heart: he will not be made king a second time. Even in our prophecies, it is often but a small thing that has been foretold and the consequences of dreams come to nothing in the end. https://perseus.tufts.edu (as of 2023-12-15)
