The hymn "
Standing on the promises" was written in 1886 by American
Russell Kelso Carter (1849-1928). He was a professor at the
Pennsylvania Military College of Chester (later
Widener College) and licensed as a preacher by the
Methodist Episcopal Church. He later became a doctor and a writer, writing novels and hymns.
He was known for his faith healing teachings and "
positive confession".
In 1972 Pennsylvania Military College disbanded its Corps of Cadets and became
Widener College (later University).
