Ray Palmer (1808-1887) wrote the words after a vision of Christ and after graduating from Yale.

Lowell Mason asked him to write the words for a song for a new hymnal. Ray Palmer, from notes from a few years before (inspired by a German poem), wrote the words to the song.

Lowell Mason (1792-1872) wrote the music from Palmer's words. A few days later, Mason told Palmer "You may live many years and do many good things, but I think you will be best known to posterity as the author of My Faith Looks Up to Thee".
