Song: O God, our help in ages past
1. Verse 1
Our God, our Help in ages past,
our Hope for years to come,
our Shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal Home.
2. Psalm 90
Psalm 90 is a poetic verse about the creation of our dwelling place on earth and our days here.
Written in 1719, Isaac Watts paraphrased Psalm 90 as a basis for his hymn "
Our God our help in ages past". John Wesley changed the first line from "
Our God" to "
O God" making the title and beginning line "
O God our help in ages past".
3. Words: Isaac Watts
Isaac Watts, 1674-1748, was born and lived in Britain and wrote many familiar hymns:
"Joy to the world"
"Our God, our help in ages past".
"When I survey the wondrous cross"
As a child, had clever sayings: "
O father, do some pity take, and I will no more verses make".
4. Music: ST. ANNE
ST. ANNE was probably composed by William Croft (PHH 149), possibly when he was organist from 1700-1711 at St. Anne's Church in Soho, London, England. (According to tradition, St. Anne was the mother of the Virgin Mary.) (hymnary.org)
5. Verse 4
A thousand ages in Thy sight
are like an ev'ning gone,
short as the watch that ends the night
before the rising sun.
6. Verse 5
Our God, our Help in ages past,
our Hope for years to come,
be Thou our Guide while life shall last,
and our eternal Home!
