Song: It is well with my soul
1. Song: It is well with my soul
The song "
It is will with my soul", sometimes called "
When peace, like a river", was written by Horatio Gates Spafford (1828-1888) in 1873. Spafford was a prominent lawyer and elder in the Presbyterian church. He endured several tragedies in his life.
Death of four year old son.
Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which ruined him financially.
Economic downturn in 1873.
Four daughters, aged 18m, 4, 7 and 12, died an a transatlantic voyage when their ship sank in 1873. His wife survived the sinking with the famous telegram "Saved alone".
Spafford wrote the lyrics as the ship passed where his daughters had died.
2. Jerusalem
They later went to Jerusalem. Horatio Spafford died of malaria in 1888. Their adopted son, discovered the Siloam inscription.
The Siloam inscription or Shiloah inscription (Hebrew: כתובת השילוח, or Silwan inscription,) known as KAI 189, is a Hebrew inscription found in the Siloam tunnel which brings water from the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam, located in the City of David in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Shiloah or Silwan. The inscription records the construction of the tunnel, which has been dated to the 8th century BC on the basis of the writing style.[1] It is the only known ancient inscription from ancient Israel and Judah which commemorates a public construction work, despite such inscriptions being commonplace in Egyptian and Mesopotamian archaeology. 4. Verse 1
When peace like a river attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.
It is well with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.
5. Verse 2
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control:
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul. Refrain
It is well with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.
6. Verse 3
My sin oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
my sin, not in part, but the whole,
is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more;
praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! Refrain
It is well with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.
7. Verse 4
O Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend;
even so, it is well with my soul. Refrain
It is well with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.
