Song: His eye is on the sparrow
1. Song: His eye is on the sparrow
The song "
His eye is on the sparrow" was written in 1905 by Civilla D. Martin (1866-1948). Charles H. Gabriel wrote the music. Because of her health, she remained home most of the time.
Born in Canada, she spent most of her life in Atlanta, GA, as a member of the First Christian Church.
In 1904 she wrote "
God will take care of you". Her husband, W. S. Martin (1862-1925) wrote the music.
2. Phrase
The saying "
keep your eye on the sparrow" means to be totally focused on the goal.
This saying appears to come from the Bible.
Psalms 32:8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. [kjv]
Matthew 10:31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. [kjv]
Note that the verse in Matthew is mistranslated. the
KJV (King James Version) uses "
more value" for the Greek word for "
different". The "
many" is not in the Greek.
3. Verse 1
Why should I feel discouraged,
Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely,
And long for heav’n and home;
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant Friend is he;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.
4. Refrain
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free;
For his eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.
5. Verse 2
Let not your heart be troubled,
His tender word I hear,
And resting on his goodness,
I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path he leadeth,
But one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.
6. Refrain
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free;
For his eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.
7. Verse 3
Whenever I am tempted,
Whenever clouds arise;
When songs give place to sighing,
When hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to him,
From care he sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.
8. Refrain
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free;
For his eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.
9. Psalms 32:8
KJV: I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
Hebrew: אשכילך ואורך בדרך זו תלך איעצה עליך עיני׃
Greek: συνετιω σε και συμβιβω σε εν οδω ταυτη η πορευση επιστηριω επι σε τους οφθαλμους μου
