Song: Joy to the World
by RS  admin@creationpie.com : 1024 x 640

1. Song: Joy to the World
The song and hymn "Joy to the world" is often sung at Christmas but Isaac Watts (1674-1748) did not compose it for Christmas.

Based on Psalms 98, the verses talk about the second coming of Jesus and not the first coming. This is the "thy kingdom come" part of the Lord's Prayer.
The word "joy" in Greek means "favor" or "grace" as in"χάρη""favor, grace". Some may not be "happy" or have modern "joy" at that time.

[simple descending scale]

2. Verse 1
Joy to the world, the Lord has come!
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room

And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing

3. Words: Isaac Watts
Isaac Watts, 1674-1748, was born and lived in Britain and wrote many familiar hymns:
As a child, had clever sayings: "O father, do some pity take, and I will no more verses make".

14. History of Joy to the World
Joy to the world melody
The words do not indicate Christmas, but the song is now associated with Christmas. No one knows exactly how that came to be.

15. Benjamin Franklin
The words were published as a collection of poems. Benjamin Franklin first published the poems in the American Colonies in 1729.

16. Music
A hundred years later, in 1836, Lowell Mason took an old English melody and adapted it for the poem.

The start of the song is a descending entire octave scale.

The song was entitled Antioch, but the initial words eventually became the name of the hymn.

In 1851, blind Fannie Crosby was brought to the Lord by the songs of Lowell Mason and others at a revival service.

17. Early recording
In 1911, recording artist Elsie Stevenson recorded Joy to the World for Victor Records (started in 1901). The song became very popular. Victor Records allowed Columbia Records to use it's disc record patent. This technology had no electronic recording or amplification. It was called the "Victor Talking Machine". The company later became RCA Victor.

18. Victor talking machine
Victor Talking Machine (1901-1929) became Radio Corporation of America, or RCA (1929-1986).

19. RCA
RCA was founded in 1919 and was acquired in 1986 be GE (General Electric).

RCA went into broadcasting, creating NBC (National Broadcasting Corporation), in order to create more demand for their hardware products such as TV, radio, etc.

A plant in Lancaster, Pennsylvania which RCA operated from the late 1940s to June 1986, released more than 250,000 pounds of 1,1,1-trichloroethane pollutants per year from its exhaust stacks. Wikipedia. (as of 2021-11-19)

20. Verse 2
Joy to the World, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy

21. Verse 3
No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make His blessings flow

Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as, far as, the curse is found

22. Verse 4
He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness

And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders, of His love
