Daniel 4: Witness statement of a non-Jew

In Daniel, the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar is sometimes depicted as a narcissistic, overbearing and unreasonable person. Perhaps this is undercut the authority given by God to some on earth.

The Jewish scriptures, known from the Christian viewpoint as the OT (Old Testament), were written in Hebrew. Well, almost all of them. And all were written by Jews, with the interesting exception of Daniel 4.

Daniel 4 is written in Aramaic, is written in the first person, and is the .witness statement of King Nebuchadnezzar.

Here is a short review.

Daniel and his friends (and others) were taken to Babylon as young men to be trained to help run the empire.
Daniel interprets the king's dream that lays out the rest of world history, hundreds and thousands of years before it happens.
Daniel will be given other important prophecies that help establish the truth of the Bible.
After interpreting the dream, young Daniel is promoted to be head of the Magi, a hereditary priestly power group in Babylon.
Those Magi connive to entrap some of Daniel's friends in the fiery furnace episode - and may have tricked the king into this entrapment.

We pick up the story in chapter 4.

Nebuchadnezzar is writing this in the first person as a witness statement of his conversion experience.

Notice that, as was usual for scrolls, the writer identifies himself in the first line.

Nebuchadnezzar then provides an overview and conclusion before beginning with the details.

Daniel 4:1

KJV: Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.

Daniel 4:2

Hebrew: אנה נבוכדנצר שלה הוית בביתי ורענן בהיכלי׃

Greek: εγω ναβουχοδονοσορ ευθηνων ημην εν τω οικω μου και ευθαλων

Nebuchadnezzar has another disturbing dream.

Daniel 4:5

KJV: I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

Hebrew: חלם חזית וידחלנני והרהרין על משכבי וחזוי ראשי יבהלנני׃

Greek: ενυπνιον ειδον και εφοβερισεν με και εταραχθην επι της κοιτης μου και αι ορασεις της κεφαλης μου συνεταραξαν με

The "wise men" are again called.

Daniel 4:6

KJV: Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream.

Hebrew: ומני שים טעם להנעלה קדמי לכל חכימי בבל די פשר חלמא יהודענני׃

Greek: και δι εμου ετεθη δογμα του εισαγαγειν ενωπιον μου παντας τους σοφους βαβυλωνος οπως την συγκρισιν του ενυπνιου γνωρισωσιν μοι

This would include the "magi" in the LXX (Septuagint) which is "astrologers" in the KJV (King James Version).

Daniel 4:7

KJV: Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.

Hebrew: באדין עללין חרטמיא אשפיא כשדיא וגזריא וחלמא אמר אנה קדמיהון ופשרה לא מהודעין לי׃

Greek: και εισεπορευοντο οι επαοιδοι μαγοι γαζαρηνοι χαλδαιοι και το ενυπνιον ειπα εγω ενωπιον αυτων και την συγκρισιν αυτου ουκ εγνωρισαν μοι

The "wise men" could not interpret the dream.

So Daniel is called.

Daniel 4:8

KJV: But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,

Hebrew: ועד אחרין על קדמי דניאל די שמה בלטשאצר כשם אלהי ודי רוח אלהין קדישין בה וחלמא קדמוהי אמרת׃

Greek: εως ου ηλθεν δανιηλ ου το ονομα βαλτασαρ κατα το ονομα του θεου μου ος πνευμα θεου αγιον εν εαυτω εχει και το ενυπνιον ενωπιον αυτου ειπα

Daniel is the "master" of the "magicians" which includes the "magi".

Daniel 4:9

KJV: O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.

KJV: This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

Hebrew: דנה חלמא חזית אנה מלכא נבוכדנצר ואנתה בלטשאצר פשרא אמר כל קבל די כל חכימי מלכותי לא יכלין פשרא להודעתני ואנתה כהל די רוח אלהין קדישין בך׃

Daniel 4:19

Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.

Hebrew: ודי חזה מלכא עיר וקדיש נחת מן שמיא ואמר גדו אילנא וחבלוהי ברם עקר שרשוהי בארעא שבקו ובאסור די פרזל ונחש בדתאא די ברא ובטל שמיא יצטבע ועם חיות ברא חלקה עד די שבעה עדנין יחלפון עלוהי׃

KJV: That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

Hebrew: ולך טרדין מן אנשא ועם חיות ברא להוה מדרך ועשבא כתורין לך יטעמון ומטל שמיא לך מצבעין ושבעה עדנין יחלפון עליך עד די תנדע די שליט עליא במלכות אנשא ולמן די יצבא יתננה׃

Daniel 4:26

KJV: And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.

Hebrew: ודי אמרו למשבק עקר שרשוהי די אילנא מלכותך לך קימה מן די תנדע די שלטן שמיא׃

Greek: και οτι ειπαν εασατε την φυην των ριζων του δενδρου η βασιλεια σου σοι μενει αφ ης αν γνως την εξουσιαν την ουρανιον

Daniel 4:27

KJV: Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

Hebrew: להן מלכא מלכי ישפר עליך וחטיך בצדקה פרק ועויתך במחן ענין הן תהוא ארכה לשלותך׃

Greek: δια τουτο βασιλευ η βουλη μου αρεσατω σοι και τας αμαρτιας σου εν ελεημοσυναις λυτρωσαι και τας αδικιας σου εν οικτιρμοις πενητων ισως εσται μακροθυμος τοις παραπτωμασιν σου ο θεος

Daniel 4:28

KJV: All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.

Hebrew: כלא מטא על נבוכדנצר מלכא׃

Daniel 4:29

KJV: At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.

Hebrew: לקצת ירחין תרי עשר על היכל מלכותא די בבל מהלך הוה׃

Greek: μετα δωδεκαμηνον επι τω ναω της βασιλειας αυτου εν βαβυλωνι περιπατων

The king feels pride in what he has accomplished by what he sees as his own efforts. The Hebrew word for this, not in the OT, is "mammon".

Daniel 4:30

KJV: The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?

Hebrew: ענה מלכא ואמר הלא דא היא בבל רבתא די אנה בניתה לבית מלכו בתקף חסני וליקר הדרי׃

Greek: απεκριθη ο βασιλευς και ειπεν ουχ αυτη εστιν βαβυλων η μεγαλη ην εγω ωκοδομησα εις οικον βασιλειας εν τω κρατει της ισχυος μου εις τιμην της δοξης μου

KJV: While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.

Daniel 4:33

KJV: The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

Hebrew: בה שעתא מלתא ספת על נבוכדנצר ומן אנשא טריד ועשבא כתורין יאכל ומטל שמיא גשמה יצטבע עד די שערה כנשרין רבה וטפרוהי כצפרין׃

Greek: αυτη τη ωρα ο λογος συνετελεσθη επι ναβουχοδονοσορ και απο των ανθρωπων εξεδιωχθη και χορτον ως βους ησθιεν και απο της δροσου του ουρανου το σωμα αυτου εβαφη εως ου αι τριχες αυτου ως λεοντων εμεγαλυνθησαν και οι ονυχες αυτου ως ορνεων

The Jewish tradition is that Daniel was the one who took care of the king during his illness (i.e., punishment).

Daniel 4:34

KJV: And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

Hebrew: ולקצת יומיה אנה נבוכדנצר עיני לשמיא נטלת ומנדעי עלי יתוב ולעליא ברכת ולחי עלמא שבחת והדרת די שלטנה שלטן עלם ומלכותה עם דר ודר׃

Nebuchadnezzar now sees the big picture.

Daniel 4:35

KJV: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

Hebrew: וכל דארי ארעא כלה חשיבין וכמצביה עבד בחיל שמיא ודארי ארעא ולא איתי די ימחא בידה ויאמר לה מה עבדת׃

Greek: και παντες οι κατοικουντες την γην ως ουδεν ελογισθησαν και κατα το θελημα αυτου ποιει εν τη δυναμει του ουρανου και εν τη κατοικια της γης και ουκ εστιν ος αντιποιησεται τη χειρι αυτου και ερει αυτω τι εποιησας

Nebuchadnezzar now returns to "normal", or as "normal" as he can be.

Daniel 4:36

KJV: At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.

Hebrew: בה זמנא מנדעי יתוב עלי וליקר מלכותי הדרי וזוי יתוב עלי ולי הדברי ורברבני יבעון ועל מלכותי התקנת ורבו יתירה הוספת לי׃

Greek: αυτω τω καιρω αι φρενες μου επεστραφησαν επ εμε και εις την τιμην της βασιλειας μου ηλθον και η μορφη μου επεστρεψεν επ εμε και οι τυραννοι μου και οι μεγιστανες μου εζητουν με και επι την βασιλειαν μου εκραταιωθην και μεγαλωσυνη περισσοτερα προσετεθη μοι

Daniel 4:37
