Luke: Feminism in Bible times - a start
1. Luke: Feminism in Bible times - a start
How many sermons have you heard where viewpoints of the feminist, or woman's liberation, viewpoints are expressed?
Taken to the extreme, one can view Ruth in the book of Ruth as a modern feminist who asserts her will. Note that Ruth is a type of the believer, Boaz is a type of Christ as the Kinsman Redeemer and Noami is a type of the Holy Spirit or Comforter.
Do we see any feminist or woman's liberation, viewpoints expressed in the Bible? Let us look at one possible place.
2. Bearing children
At the time, bearing children was considered important and a sign of status. Jesus was speaking when a woman interjected the following.
Luke 11:27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. [kjv]
3. Luke 11:27
KJV: And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
Greek: εγενετο δε εν τω λεγειν αυτον ταυτα επαρασα τις γυνη φωνην γυνη εκ του οχλου ειπεν αυτω μακαρια η κοιλια η βαστασασα σε και μαστοι ους εθηλασας
4. Jesus and the cross
Jesus is on his way to the cross.

5. Luke 23:27

Greek: ηκολουθει δε αυτω πολυ πληθος του λαου και γυναικων αι και εκοπτοντο και εθρηνουν αυτον
6. The days are coming
Here we have the creator of the world, under stress and pain, prophesying about their children (descendants).
Luke 23:28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. [kjv]
23:29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. [kjv]
7. Luke 23:28
KJV: But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
Greek: στραφεις δε προς αυτας ο ιησους ειπεν θυγατερες ιερουσαλημ μη κλαιετε επ εμε πλην εφ εαυτας κλαιετε και επι τα τεκνα υμων
8. Luke 23:29
KJV: For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.
Greek: οτι ιδου ερχονται ημεραι εν αις ερουσιν μακαριαι αι στειραι και αι κοιλιαι αι ουκ εγεννησαν και μαστοι οι ουκ εθηλασαν εθρεψαν
9. Feminism
When has it ever happened in the history of the world that women who never gave birth nor raised children are to be considered in high esteem and "blessed" (as in happy and content)?
