What does it mean that "
the just shall live by faith"? There are three parts here.
1. the just
2. shall live
3. by faith
Martin Luther's insight of the verses with this statement helped start the Reformation in 1517. A trilogy of these this verse and these three concepts exists in the
NT (New Testament).

The meaning that Martin Luther acquired from these verses led him to start what is called the "
Reformation".

Habakkuk 2:4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. [kjv]
Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. [kjv]
Galatians 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. [kjv]
Hebrews 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. [kjv]
4. Habakkuk 2:4
Habakkuk prophesied at the time of Daniel near the fall of Babylon (and the later Lion's Den when Daniel was about 70 years old).
KJV: Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
Hebrew: הנה עפלה לא ישרה נפשו בו וצדיק באמונתו יחיה׃
Greek: εαν υποστειληται ουκ ευδοκει η ψυχη μου εν αυτω ο δε δικαιος εκ πιστεως μου ζησεται
Latin: ecce qui incredulus est non erit recta anima eius in semet ipso iustus autem in fide sua vivet

The Hebrew word for "
faith" used here "
באמונתו" (be-e-mun-na-tov), literally "
by his faith" means a "
faithfulness" or "
trust".

In Galatians, Paul shows how the "
just" shall live by faith.
KJV: For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

KJV: But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

Latin: quoniam autem in lege nemo iustificatur apud Deum manifestum est quia iustus ex fide vivit

In Hebrews, Paul shows how the just shall live by "
faith".
KJV: Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

9. The just shall live by faith
The phrase "
The just shall live by faith" appears in Habakkuk but also appears three times in the
GNT (Greek New Testament) in letters written by Paul. Each part applies to one of the books.
"the just": Romans
"shall live": Galatians, Galatia, people of Gaul, Celts, Celtics, clover, etc.
"by faith": Hebrews
The "
just" is the same word as "
righteous", those who are "
right" by God.
The righteous shall live by faith.
