Have you ever heard someone, or a child, say "I goed" rather than "I went"? Have you ever annoyed an English teacher with such a statement? At one time, saying something like this was not an issue.

The Old English word "geond" ≈ "went" as in "goed".

At one time, the "goed" was part of Old English but was eventually replaced by the French "went".

The present tense of "went" is "wend" and is still occasionally used, as in "I wend my way" (present tense) or "I went my way" (past tense).
