Short verses
1. Without saying
There are two things that can always go without saying.
1.
2.
The Jews used this idea with a word that could represent God since the actual word should not be said (nor written).
2. Short verses
There are many short verses in the Bible. These could be short in Greek, in English, etc. English: 2 words (three words in Greek)
John 11:35 Jesus wept. [kjv]
εδακρυσεν ο ιησους [gnt]
Greek: 2 words (adjacent verses). The Greek for "
rejoice" is that of "
greeting".
1 Thessalonians 5:16 Rejoice evermore. [kjv]
παντοτε χαιρετε [gnt]
5:17 Pray without ceasing. [kjv]
αδιαλειπτως προσευχεσθε [gnt]
5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. [kjv]
εν παντι ευχαριστειτε τουτο γαρ θελημα θεου εν χριστω ιησου εις υμας [gnt]
For Paul to have written "
without pause" would have been a play on words meaning "
without Paul". Instead, he wrote "
pray" "
without taking a break/intermission" which does not have to be "
continually".
3. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
KJV: In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Greek: εν παντι ευχαριστειτε τουτο γαρ θελημα θεου εν χριστω ιησου εις υμας
4. John 11:35-36
John 11:35 Jesus wept. [kjv]
εδακρυσεν ο ιησους [gnt]
et lacrimatus est Iesus [v]
11:36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him ! [kjv]
ελεγον ουν οι ιουδαιοι ιδε πως εφιλει αυτον [gnt]
Some pedantic academics will claim it is better to say "
tears came to Jesus' eyes". The following verse, however, seems to support the semantic idea of "
wept". This verse, however, has
3 words in the Greek. There are two verses in the
GNT (Greek New Testament) that have only
2 Greek words. The verses are adjacent.
5. John 11:35
KJV: Jesus wept.
Greek: εδακρυσεν ο ιησους
6. John 11:36
KJV: Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him !
Greek: ελεγον ουν οι ιουδαιοι ιδε πως εφιλει αυτον
7. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17
1 Thessalonians 5:16 Rejoice evermore. [kjv]
παντοτε χαιρετε [gnt]
semper gaudete [v]
5:17 Pray without ceasing. [kjv]
αδιαλειπτως προσευχεσθε [gnt]
sine intermissione orate [v]
The two shortest verses in the
GNT are adjacent in 1 Thessalonians. The Greek for "
rejoice" is that of "
greeting".
8. 1 Thessalonians 5:16
9. 1 Thessalonians 5:17
KJV: Pray without ceasing.
Greek: αδιαλειπτως προσευχεσθε
