The English term "onomatopoeia" means a word or words that sound like their meaning.

The word comes from the modern Greek words "όνομα" (O-no-ma) ≈ "name, reputation, noun" and "ποιέω" (pee-EH-o) ≈ "make" (from which comes the English word poetry).

Determining a common origin of such words is made difficult since these words come from the sounds they refer to.
