Victory and strife: bema seat
1. Victory and strife: bema seat
2. Victory
The Nike shoe company Nike was in the news in June 2021 for creating a special shoe that used the wrong Greek letters used to spell out the name of Nike.
ΝΙΚΕ (correct)
ΠΙΚΕ (incorrect, as on the shoe)
The modern Greek word
"νίκη" (NEE-kee) ≈ "victory".
3. Florida Gators
For sports fans, a similar embarrassment happened to the Florida Gators in 2003.
In 2003, the Florida Gators media guide featured a photo of a crocodile rather than an alligator. You think they would know the difference.
Note: An alligator has a wide snout and is black while a crocodile has a pointy snout and has an olive-green color.
4. Thessalonica
Paul wrote several letters to the church at Thessalonica. The ancient Greek word
"Θεσσαλονίκη" ≈ "Thessalonica" comes from two Greek words.
The ancient Greek word "Θεσσᾰλός" ≈ "Thessalos", a name given to the daughter of Phillip II (father of Alexander the Great) after his victory in Thessaly - a region in northern Greece.
The ancient Greek word "νική" ≈ "victory". Later, the city was named after her for the victory there.
5. The doctrine of Santa Claus
Revelation 2:6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. [kjv]
αλλα τουτο εχεις οτι μισεις τα εργα των νικολαιτων α καγω μισω [gnt]
… facta Nicolaitarum … [v]
… Werke … Nikolaiten … [lu]
Jesus loves people but hates (sinful) deeds.
The Greek name for "
Nicolaitans" is related to the Greek name from which "
Santa Claus" originates. That is, literally, "
victory of the people".
A "
doctrine" is a "
teaching". [Nicodemus]
6. Nike Hercules
The Nike Hercules (SAM-A-25 and then MM-14) was a
SAM (Surface to Air Missile) for medium and high altitude air defense.
The motto "
lolamy" means "
can do".
7. 1 Corinthians 55-56: Victory over the sting of death
1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? [kjv]
που σου θανατε το νικος που σου θανατε το κεντρον [gnt]
15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. [kjv]
το δε κεντρον του θανατου η αμαρτια η δε δυναμις της αμαρτιας ο νομος [gnt]
15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. [kjv]
Do people fear the "
sting of death" as stated by Paul?
The Greek word «
κέντρον» means something with a sharp point, which could be used as a whip or goad. As such, it could be like a pole with a sharp point. It can also mean a thorn, nail, etc.
8. Strife
1 Corinthians 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. [kjv]
ει δε τις δοκει φιλονεικος ειναι ημεις τοιαυτην συνηθειαν ουκ εχομεν ουδε αι εκκλησιαι του θεου [gnt]
The Greek word for "
contentious" used here is not the Greek word that means "
bad logic" as in "
eristic logic" and that is often translated by the
KJV as "
strife" or "
contentious".
9. 1 Corinthians 11:16
KJV: But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
Greek: ει δε τις δοκει φιλονεικος ειναι ημεις τοιαυτην συνηθειαν ουκ εχομεν ουδε αι εκκλησιαι του θεου
10. Strife
Proverbs 10:12 Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all that do not love strife. [bs3]
μισος εγειρει νεικος παντας δε τους μη φιλονεικουντας καλυπτει φιλια [lxx]
22:10 Cast out a pestilent person from the council, and strife shall go out with him; for when he sits in the council he dishonours all. [bs3]
εκβαλε εκ συνεδριου λοιμον και συνεξελευσεται αυτω νεικος οταν γαρ καθιση εν συνεδριω παντας ατιμαζει [lxx]
11. Proverbs 10:12
KJV: Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

Brenton: Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all that do not love strife.
12. Proverbs 22:10
KJV: Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.
Hebrew: גרש לץ ויצא מדון וישבת דין וקלון׃
Greek: εκβαλε εκ συνεδριου λοιμον και συνεξελευσεται αυτω νεικος οταν γαρ καθιση εν συνεδριω παντας ατιμαζει
Brenton: Cast out a pestilent person from the council, and strife shall go out with him; for when he sits in the council he dishonours all.

14. 2 Corinthians 5:10 Bema seat
2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. [kjv]
τους γαρ παντας ημας φανερωθηναι δει εμπροσθεν του βηματος του χριστου ινα κομισηται εκαστος τα δια του σωματος προς α επραξεν ειτε αγαθον ειτε φαυλον [gnt]
… tribunal … corporis … [v]
In 2 Corinthians 5:10, and in Romans, Paul talks about standing before the "
judgment seat" of Christ. The Greek is the "
bema" seat. The Corinth Games were second only to the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. That "
bema" seat was the seat at which the
judge sat in determining and presenting awards. Today, the
athletes stand on the "
victory podium".
15. Victory and strife: bema seat
16. 2 Corinthians 5:10
KJV: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
Greek: τους γαρ παντας ημας φανερωθηναι δει εμπροσθεν του βηματος του χριστου ινα κομισηται εκαστος τα δια του σωματος προς α επραξεν ειτε αγαθον ειτε κακον φαυλον
Latin: omnes enim nos manifestari oportet ante tribunal Christi ut referat unusquisque propria corporis prout gessit sive bonum sive malum
Wycliffe: For it bihoueth vs alle to be schewid bifor the trone of Crist, that euery man telle the propre thingis of the bodi, as he hath don, ethir good, ether yuel.
17. Victory beam
The ancient Greek word
"βῆμα" ≈ "step, pace, raised place or tribune" and is related to
"βωμός" ≈ "raised platform, altar".
In the modern Olympics, the
athletes, since 1932 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (aka. Olympic Stadium, site of the first
Super Bowl in 1967), stand on the "
victory platform" to receive their award. In ancient times, one stood before the (elevated) seat of the
judge.
The "
Olympic Village" was introduced in 1932. The Olympic Village massacre happened in Munich in 1972.
18. Beam me up
These Greek word for "
bema seat" does
not appear to be related to the English word
"beam" which is related to the German word
"Baum" ≈ "tree", as in the Star Trek "
Beam me up Scotty." with the related saying "
No trace of intelligent life down here.".
Paul sometimes starts a saying and then leaves the reader to finish the line.
Philippians 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer… [kjv]
οιδα γαρ οτι τουτο μοι αποβησεται εις σωτηριαν δια της υμων δεησεως και επιχορηγιας του πνευματος ιησου χριστου [gnt]
Job 13:16 And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him. [bs3]
