Truth types and 1 John
1. Truth types
Let us look at some types of truth and then at what might be relevant from the Bible, in particular, from 1 John 5.
2. Truth types: logic, reality, opinion
The word "
truth" has a wide range of meanings. For the present purposes, the following are considered levels of truth.
Logical truth: abstract symbol manipulation
Reality truth: traditional science from facts and models
Human truth: opinions and everything else
These areas can overlap but the distinction is, nonetheless, useful. Human opinion truth may or may not be connected to reality truth and/or logical truth.
3. John 14:6 Way truth and life
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. [kjv]
… via … veritas … vita … [v]
Jesus is the
"way",
"truth" and
"life".
In Latin, these three words start with "
v":
"via",
"veritas" and
"vita". The Greek and Hebrew words for
"truth" have to do with "
reality" and
not "
logic" or "
opinion". Thus, Jesus is the
"way" (opinion as in glory), the
"truth" (reality as in science) and the
"life" (logic as in information).
4. John 14:6
KJV: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
5. Matthew 28:19
KJV: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
6. John 1:1
KJV: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
7. John 1:14
KJV: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, ) full of grace and truth.
8. 1 Corinthians 13:12
KJV: For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
9. 1 Corinthians 13:13
KJV: And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Faith is not a feeling (James Dobson), hope is an expectation.
10. 1 John 5 Water and blood and truth
1 John 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. [kjv]
Jesus came
not by just
water, but by
water and blood.
Is the "blood" sufficient?
Did Jesus have to die on the "cross" and be "resurrected"?
11. Paul
1 Corinthians 15:13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: [kjv]
15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. [kjv]
Is the "blood" sufficient?
Did Jesus have to die on the "cross" and be "resurrected"?
12. 1 Corinthians 15:13
KJV: But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
13. 1 Corinthians 15:14
KJV: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
14. 1 John 5:6
KJV: This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
15. Water, blood, and truth
We have three ideas presented here.
water
blood
spirit
Can we make a correspondence of these with the three types of truth? Let us see what happens.
16. 1 John 5:7
KJV: For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
Latin: quia tres sunt qui testimonium dant
Note: The Holy Ghost in the Greek is the Holy Spirit.
17. Father, word, and holy ghost
Note the emphasis here on "
heaven". This verse presents what is today called the "
trinity".
Father
Word (Jesus)
Holy Ghost
The Latin Vulgate does not have the complete verse as the others. Is this in issue?
18. 1 John 5:8
KJV: And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
19. Spirit, water, and blood
Note the emphasis on "
earth". This verse presents what is today called the "
trinity".
Spirit
water
blood
Why is there a difference in order between "
heaven" and "
earth"?
20. Order differences
Here are the order differences.
Verse 7 (heaven): Father, Word=Jesus, Spirit
Verse 8 (earth): Spirit, water, blood
Note: Spirit may or may not be the same Spirit between "
heaven" and "
earth".
21. Possible correspondence
Here is a possible correspondence between truths.
Logical truth: Father, blood (contains information)
Reality truth: Son, water (no information content)
Human truth: Spirit (no information or reality content, like the wind, more human-like)
Does any of this fit? Is there a better truth?
