Song: The solid rock
1. Song: The solid rock
The hymn "
The solid rock" that starts "
My hope is built on nothing less" was written in 1834 by English Baptist minister Edward Mote (1797-1874).
He wrote about 100 hymns. The song was inspired by the parable of the wise and foolish builders with the well known phrase in the chorus "
All other ground is sinking sand".
2. Music: William Bradbury
Organist and music teacher William Bradbury (1816-1868) composed the tune "
SOLID ROCK" for the lyrics in 1863.
His other tunes included "
He leadeth me" and "
Jesus loves me" to which he added the refrain line "
Yes Jesus loves me".
3. Verse 1
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:
all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
4. Verse 2
When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
in every high and stormy gale,
my anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:
all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
5. Verse 3
His oath, his covenant, his blood,
support me in the whelming flood;
when all around my soul gives way,
he then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:
all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
6. Verse 4
When he shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found:
dressed in his righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:
all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
