In the Say and Seal novel (#2, #1 was Uncle Tom's Cabin) by Susan Warner (1819-1885), with help from Anna Warner (1824-1915), a little boy named Johnny Fox is dying. His Sunday School teacher comforts him by taking the little boy in his arms, rocking him, and saying the comforting words, "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so."
Second verse:

Jesus loves me he who died heaven's gate to open wide.
He will wash away my sin, let His little child come in.

After the panic of 1837, the family and the sisters had moved to Constitution Island in the Hudson River, across form the United States Military Academy at West Point. Until the near the end of their lives, Susan Warner (1819-1885) and Anna Warner (1824-1915) taught Sunday School classes to cadets who would later serve in the military - including many generals in World War I and II.

They are the only civilians buried at the West Point military cemetery.

The West Point class of 1915 is known as the "Class the stars fell on" as, due to World War II, 59 of 164 graduates (36%) attained the rank of general. Most classes have only a small number of generals due to having many fewer generals in times of peace.

Douglas MacArthur (American military leader) (1880-1964) graduated at the top of the class in 1903 from West Point.

William Bradbury (1816-1868) wrote the tune to the 1859 poem "Jesus loves me". To Anna Warner's poem, he added the chorus "Yes Jesus Loves me". The simple pentatonic melody makes it easy for children of all ages to sing this song.

He wrote many tunes, including "The solid rock" and "He leadeth me".

The song "Jesus loves me" shows up in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific during World War II.

In 1943 in the Solomon Islands, John F. Kennedy's PT-109 was rammed and sunk. Islanders Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana who found Kennedy and the survivors remember that when they rode on PT boats to retrieve the survivors, the Marines sang this song with the natives, who had learned it from Seventh-day Adventist missionaries.
