4. Words: Oakey and Bliss
Book: At the foot of ParnassusThe words of "Jesus loves even me", from 1870,are attributed to Emily Sullivan Oakey (1829-1883), a graduate of the Albany Female Academy. As an American educator, author and poet, she taught rhetoric, composition and foreign languages for many years, published a book of poetry and wrote the words to several hymns.

She was always frail and delicate and never was in good health during her life.

5. Music: Philip Paul Bliss
The music for "Jesus loves even me" are by P. P. Bliss (1838-1876). Bliss was born in Clearfield County, PA and grew up an a farm. He became an itinerant music teacher, publishing his first song in 1864. In 1868 D. L. Moody told him he should be a singing (and musical) evangelist. He died in a train wreck and fire in 1876 - the centennial year of the Declaration of Independence.
