The hymn "
O for a thousand tongues to sing" was written by Charles Wesley and is based on Psalm 35:28 The hymn title is based on the original 7th stanza of the 18 stanza poem.

Youngest son and 18th child of Samuel and Susanna Wesley
In 1735 went with his brother John Wesley to Georgia, returning to England shortly.
Became itinerant and field preacher.
Said to have written over 6,000 hymns.

Charles Wesley was suffering a bout of Pleurisy in May of 1738.
He read, studied, thought, and prayed a lot during that time.
John soon had a similar illness and experience
John sang a hymn written by Charles.
One year later, John wrote "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing" for the event.

Carl Glaser in 1828 wrote the basis of the tune for "
O for a thousand tongues to sing" called Amazon.
In 1839, Lowel Mason (1792-1872), American church musician, arranged the tune.

In 1824, composed the tune HAMBURG (named after the German city Hamburg) which is the tune for "When I survey the wondrous cross". "Mason indicated that the tune was based on a chant in the first Gregorian tone." (hymnary.org)
In 1836, Lowell Mason took an old English melody and adapted it for the poem written by Watts that became known as "Joy to the world" (melody called ANTIOCH).
Wrote tune to "Nearer, my God to thee".
