1. Song: Are ye able said the master
The hymn "Are ye able said the master" was written by American theologian and poet Earl Marlatt (1892-1976) from Winchester, IN. He was a twin boy of a Methodist Episcopal minister. He was a 2nd lieutenant in the field artillery during World War I and later a professor of philosophy at Boston University.

The hymn was written for a service to consecrate the School of Religious Education at Boston University in 1926. It was popular in Methodist assemblies and camps for many decades.
The motivation for the hymn was to tie together Mark 10:35-40 where two disciples "ask to sit on the right and left hand of Christ in glory". The other part is Luke 23:39-43 with the two thieves on either side of Jesus at the crucifixion. Jesus says to the one "today you will be with me in paradise".

8. Verse 1
"Are ye able," said the Master,
"To be crucified with me?"
"Yea," the sturdy dreamers answered,
"To the death we follow Thee."

Lord, we are able. our spirits are Thine.
Remold them, make us, like Thee, divine.
Thy guiding radiance above us shall be
A beacon to God, to love, and loyalty.

9. Verse 2
Are ye able to remember,
When a thief lifts up his eyes,
That his pardoned soul is worthy
Of a place in paradise?

Lord, we are able. our spirits are Thine.
Remold them, make us, like Thee, divine.
Thy guiding radiance above us shall be
A beacon to God, to love, and loyalty.

10. Verse 3
Are ye able when the shadows
Close around you with the sod,
To believe that spirit triumphs,
To commend your soul to God?

Lord, we are able. our spirits are Thine.
Remold them, make us, like Thee, divine.
Thy guiding radiance above us shall be
A beacon to God, to love, and loyalty.

11. Verse 3
"Are ye able?" Still the Master
Whispers down eternity,
And heroic spirits answer
Now, as then, in Galilee.

Lord, we are able. our spirits are Thine.
Remold them, make us, like Thee, divine.
Thy guiding radiance above us shall be
A beacon to God, to love, and loyalty.
