12. 153 fish
Throughout history, people have wondered why there were exactly 153 fish.

We will dismiss the argument that, as a fisherman, John just exaggerated the number of this catch.

Of course, John also wrote of the number 666 in Revelation, another famous (or infamous) number.

It appears that when theologians, etc., were asked about the number 153, they felt compelled to provide some logically sound answer.

13. Jerome
Jerome wrote that Oppian's Halieutica listed 153 species of fish, although this could not have been the intended meaning of the Gospel writer because Oppian composed Halieutica after the Gospel text was written, and at any rate never gave a list of fish species that clearly adds up to 153. 14. Fish number
Saint Augustine (Early Christian father) argued that the significance lay in the fact that 153 is the sum of the first 17 integers (i.e. 153 is the 17th triangular number), with 17 representing the combination of divine grace (the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit) and law (the Ten Commandments). 16. Number 153: number of the fish
FishThis fish shape was adopted by early Christians as the symbol of Christianity (about 100 AD), but the symbol itself goes back many hundreds of years. The number 153 was known as the "number of the fish".
