Philippians 1 and 2: review
by RS  admin@creationpie.com : 1024 x 640

1. Philippians 1 and 2: review
Philippians purpose: Call the leadership or "bishops" to task for taking the church in directions not in line with Christ. Surprisingly, there is little if any mention of the modern English sense of "joy".

Paul uses puns, play on words, references to other scriptures, etc., to bring out his purpose in a very circumspect way. They are using "personal opinion" and "invalid logic" to portray their own view of Christ for their own purposes. By chapter 3, he will allude to the "bishops" as "enemies" of the cross of Christ.

2. Joy and favor
The Greek word translated "joy" is that of a "favor".
The Greek word translated "rejoice" is that of a "greet".

Paul is relating what Jesus said:
Verse route2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: … [kjv]

How about "My joy/grace/favor is sufficient for thee."?

Paul is writing to the Philippians:
Verse routePhilippians 2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, … [kjv]

Paraphrase: "I did a favor for you in writing this letter. Now return my favor and do what you are supposed to do ...".

3. Verse 1
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy,
Down in my heart,
Down in my heart,
Down in my heart;
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy,
Down in my heart,
Down in my heart to stay.

4. Philippians 2:2
 All
KJV: Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Greek: πληρωσατε μου την χαραν ινα το αυτο φρονητε την αυτην αγαπην εχοντες συμψυχοι το εν φρονουντες

5. Glory and opinion
The Greek word translated as "glory" is that of "opinion".
Verse routeEphesians 3:13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. [kjv]

Paraphrase: "... which is your opinion".
Verse routePhilippians 3:19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. [kjv]

Paraphrase: "Whose purpose is destruction, ..., whose opinion is in their shame, ...".

6. Ephesians 3:13
 All
KJV: Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
Greek: διο αιτουμαι μη εκκακειν ενκακειν εν ταις θλιψεσιν μου υπερ υμων ητις εστιν δοξα υμων
Latin: propter quod peto ne deficiatis in tribulationibus meis pro vobis quae est gloria vestra

7. Philippians 3:19
 All
KJV: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.
Greek: ων το τελος απωλεια ων ο θεος η κοιλια και η δοξα εν τη αισχυνη αυτων οι τα επιγεια φρονουντες

8. Chicago
The Chicago song "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" was written and sung by Robert Lamm.

The group's original name was "Chicago Transit Authority" but that organization did not like them using their name.

Chicago song: Does anyone really know what time it is? Next line?

9. Turn to my salvation
Verse routePhilippians 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, [kjv]

The exact same four Greek words for "shall turn to my salvation" in Philippians are "shall turn to me for salvation" in Job in the LXX (Septuagint). The follow-on words are more interesting.
Verse routeJob 13:16 And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him. [bs3]

Paul is going through trials and Job went through trials - both for eventual good. Paul appears to be calling the church leadership at Philippi "frauds".
