by RS  admin@creationpie.com : 1024 x 640

1. Philippians 2:1-2 consolation
Verse routePhilippians 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, [kjv]
Verse route2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. [kjv]

2. Philippians 2:1
 All
KJV: If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

3. If
Verse routePhilippians 2:1 If there be therefore … if any … if any … if any … [kjv]

What does the word "if" mean?

Saying "if this" does not mean that the "this" is true. It means that, for the moment, you should assume that "this" is true and see what happens.

Saying "if there is a god" does not mean there is a god or there is not a god. It means you should assume the condition for the moment and see what happens.

It does not matter if the assumption does not match "reality". One is dealing with a formal symbol manipulation system called logic - which may or may not model reality.

Paul is here writing in a "bottom-up" manner as in "if any or all of these are true".

4. Approach
Verse routePhilippians 2:1 If there be therefore … if any … if any … if any … [kjv]

The "if" can be used to reason as follows.
The Apostle John tends to write in a "top-down" manner.
Paul is here writing in a "bottom-up" manner as in "if any or all of these are true".

5. Strongs - if

6. Consolation in Christ
Verse routePhilippians 2:1 … any consolation in Christ, … [kjv]

What does "consolation" mean?

The Greek word is «παρακλησις», literally "beyond calling", which is related to the "comforter", "helper" or "advocate" as in the "Holy Spirit".

7. Comforter
Verse routeJohn 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. [kjv]

8. The Holy Ghost as comforter
Verse routeJohn 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. [kjv]
Verse routeparacletusSpiritus Sanctus … [v]

The ancient Greek word"παράκλητος""advocate" as in the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost. The ancient Greek word "πνεῦμα""air, wind, breath, life, spirit, soul" where the exact meaning depends on context. The Latin word "spiritus""spirit".

The "all" "things" is that of "everything that you need to know" (as you need it).

In PIE (Proto Indo-European) languages, the words "ghost" and "guest" are cognate. A "ghost" or "guest" can be either friendly or not friendly, as in (cartoon character) Casper the friendly ghost.

9. John 14:26

Latin: paracletus autem Spiritus Sanctus quem mittet Pater in nomine meo ille vos docebit omnia et suggeret vobis omnia quaecumque dixero vobis

10. Matthew 5:4
   Matthew 5:4
 All
KJV: Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

11. Isaiah 61:2
   Isaiah 61:2
 All
KJV: To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

12. Comfort of love
Verse routePhilippians 2:1 … if any comfort of love,… [kjv]

What does "comfort" mean?

It is not the "comfort" in the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:4!

Verse routeMatthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. [kjv]
Verse routeIsaiah 61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; [kjv]

Information sign More: Matthew 5:4 Good grief: the consolation prize of comfort

13. Greek
New Testament: The second of the (eight) Beatitudes.
Verse routeMatthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. [kjv]

Old Testament: In Luke 4, Jesus reads and stops right before this verse.
Verse routeIsaiah 61:2 … and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; [kjv]

14. Consolation as going beyond a nice story
There is different Greek word for "comfort" as in "console".

Verse routeJohn 11:19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. [kjv]

One meaning of "comfort" is "consolation" as in "telling a nice story".

The ancient Greek word "παραμύθιο""console" which comes from "πάρα""beyond" and "μῦθος""story".

In humanistic terms, consoling someone is that of saying something that goes beyond a story (and is not always true).

The modern Greek word "παραμύθι" (pa-ra-MEE-thee) ≈ "folk tale".

Information sign More: Matthew 5:4 Good grief: the consolation prize of comfort

15. Philosophy
In Greek philosophy, there was a distinction made having to do with "myths" as "stories" that were more false than true and "history" that was more true than false.

Philosophers and poets
philosophers poets, story tellers
logos myth, history
logos as reason doxa as opinion
reasonable explanation stories from the muses

16. Bowels and mercies
Verse routePhilippians 2:1 … if any bowels and mercies, [kjv]

The Greek for "bowels" has to do with "gut feeling" and not "wisdom" or "head knowledge".

The Greek for "mercies" comes from the ancient Greek word "οἰκτρός""pitiable, lamentable" but can also mean "hesitation".

There is another Greek word for "mercy". It is not clear why Paul used the word that he did in this verse.

17. Strongs - bowels, affectation

18. Strongs - compassion

19. Strongs - mercy

20. Fellowship of the Spirit
Verse routePhilippians 2:1 … if any fellowship of the Spirit… [kjv]

The Greek word for "fellowship" means "community" and not "partnership" or "covenant".
Paul used "citizenship", or "conversation" in the KJV (King James Version), a few verses before and will use it in the next chapter.

Verse route1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: … [kjv]
Verse route3:20 For our conversation is in heaven… [kjv]

The Philippians valued their Roman citizenship.

21. If part to then part
Verse routePhilippians 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, [kjv]

Paul then continues with the conclusion of the "bottom-up" sequence of "if" statements.

22. Philippians 1:27
 All
KJV: Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

23. Philippians 3:20
 All
KJV: For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
Greek: ημων γαρ το πολιτευμα εν ουρανοις υπαρχει εξ ου και σωτηρα απεκδεχομεθα κυριον ιησουν χριστον

24. Philippians 2:2
Verse routePhilippians 2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. [kjv]

Vertical spots Seek, not zeal, damage grouped Vertical horns Eristic logic

The English "joy" is "favor" in the Greek.
Paul appears to be saying "I did a favor to you by writing this. Now do me a favor." (and do what you are supposed to be doing).

The repeated use of "one" throughout the letter indicates that the church (and leaders) are going in different (and incorrect) directions.

Information sign More: A joyous thank you for the grace of a gaudy favor

25. Bowels of Jesus Christ
Verse routePhilippians 1:8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. [kjv]
Verse routetestisvisceribus … [v]

Jesus church
Logic status bar Reality status bar
prudent wise
gut feeling head knowledge
active passive
The Greek for passive "record" is that of being an active "witness".

The Greek word for "bowels" has to do with an active "gut feeling"or being "prudent" with "street smarts" rather than passive "wisdom" that is "head knowledge".

Information sign More: Philippians 1a: A gracious favor of joy to Philippi

26. Philippians 1:8

 All
KJV: For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
Latin: testis enim mihi est Deus quomodo cupiam omnes vos in visceribus Christi Iesu

27. Like minded
Verse routePhilippians 2:2 …, that ye be like minded, …, of one mind. [kjv]

The Greek for "minded" or "mind" is that of being prudent, sensible and making trade-offs for the best overall success.

At Philippi, there appear to be many "opinions" on what should be and is being done - and not all are in line with Christ.

Information sign More: A wise fool should not be prudish about being prudent

28. One accord
Verse routePhilippians 2:2 … being of one accord, …. [kjv]

The Greek for "accord" is that of having the "same soul" as in the first part of the word "psychology".

Aristotle defined the Greek for "soul" as actualizing a potential. Thus, to Aristotle, a plant had a "soul".

From that point of view, "one accord" is "one ongoing purpose".

HeartThe English word "accord" comes from the Latin word "accordo""be heart to heart with" from the Latin word "cor""heart".

29. One accord
Verse routePhilippians 2:2 … being of one accord, …. [kjv]

Honda logo
The KJV translation of this verse is the source of some jokes that it involved a Honda Accord (a model of car).

Being of one accord.

30. Philippians 2:2
 All
KJV: Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

31. First law
Being "like-minded" requires both loving God and loving neighbor (as yourself).

Verse routeMatthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [kjv]

Information sign More: Integrity
Information sign More: Both love your God and love your neighbor as yourself needed

32. Like-minded
In being "like-minded", one should seek to "imitate" Christ and not "impersonate" Christ.

Information sign More: Imitator or impersonator of Christ

33. Review
[kjv]

Restated. If Christ is important to you, then return my favor and be like Christ, having the same heart, love and mind.

34. Matthew 22:37
 All
KJV: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy haert, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
