Philippians 2:1-2 consolation
1. Philippians 2:1-2 consolation
Philippians 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, [kjv]
2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. [kjv]
2. Philippians 2:1
KJV: If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
Greek: ει τις ουν παρακλησις εν χριστω ει τι παραμυθιον αγαπης ει τις κοινωνια πνευματος ει τινα τις σπλαγχνα και οικτιρμοι
Latin: si qua ergo consolatio in Christo si quod solacium caritatis si qua societas spiritus si quid viscera et miserationes
3. If
Philippians 2:1 If there be therefore … if any … if any … if any … [kjv]
What does the word "
if" mean?
Saying "
if this" does not mean that the "
this" is true. It means that, for the moment, you should assume that "
this" is true and see what happens.
Saying "
if there is a god" does not mean there is a god or there is not a god. It means you should assume the condition for the moment and see what happens.
It does not matter if the assumption does not match "
reality". One is dealing with a formal symbol manipulation system called logic - which may or may not model reality.
Paul is here writing in a "
bottom-up" manner as in "
if any or all of these are true".
4. Approach
Philippians 2:1 If there be therefore … if any … if any … if any … [kjv]
The "
if" can be used to reason as follows.
"bottom-up" or "forward-chaining"
"top-down" or "backward-chaining"
The Apostle John tends to write in a "
top-down" manner.
Top-down: d if c if b if a
Bottom-up: if a then if b then if c then if d then ...
Paul is here writing in a "
bottom-up" manner as in "
if any or all of these are true".

6. Consolation in Christ
Philippians 2:1 … any consolation in Christ, … [kjv]
What does "
consolation" mean?
The Greek word is «
παρακλησις», literally "
beyond calling", which is related to the "
comforter", "
helper" or "
advocate" as in the "
Holy Spirit".
If there be any comforter (Holy Spirit) in Christ ...
7. Comforter
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. [kjv]
8. The Holy Ghost as comforter
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. [kjv]
ο δε παρακλητος το πνευμα το αγιον ο πεμψει ο πατηρ εν τω ονοματι μου εκεινος υμας διδαξει παντα και υπομνησει υμας παντα α ειπον υμιν εγω [gnt]
paracletus … Spiritus Sanctus … [v]
The ancient Greek word
"παράκλητος" ≈ "advocate" as in the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost. The ancient Greek word
"πνεῦμα" ≈ "air, wind, breath, life, spirit, soul" where the exact meaning depends on context. The Latin word
"spiritus" ≈ "spirit".
The "
all"
"things" is that of "
everything that you need to know" (as you need it).
In
PIE (Proto Indo-European) languages, the words "
ghost" and "
guest" are cognate. A "
ghost" or "
guest" can be either friendly or not friendly, as in (cartoon character) Casper the friendly ghost.
9. John 14:26
KJV: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Greek: ο δε παρακλητος το πνευμα το αγιον ο πεμψει ο πατηρ εν τω ονοματι μου εκεινος υμας διδαξει παντα και υπομνησει υμας παντα α ειπον υμιν εγω
Latin: paracletus autem Spiritus Sanctus quem mittet Pater in nomine meo ille vos docebit omnia et suggeret vobis omnia quaecumque dixero vobis
10. Matthew 5:4
KJV: Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Greek: μακαριοι οι πενθουντες οτι αυτοι παρακληθησονται
11. Isaiah 61:2
KJV: To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Hebrew: לקרא שנת רצון ליהוה ויום נקם לאלהינו לנחם כל אבלים׃
Greek: καλεσαι ενιαυτον κυριου δεκτον και ημεραν ανταποδοσεως παρακαλεσαι παντας τους πενθουντας
12. Comfort of love
Philippians 2:1 … if any comfort of love,… [kjv]
What does "
comfort" mean?
It is
not the "
comfort" in the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:4!
Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. [kjv]
Isaiah 61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; [kjv]
13. Greek
14. Consolation as going beyond a nice story
There is
different Greek word for "
comfort" as in
"console".
John 11:19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. [kjv]
πολλοι δε εκ των ιουδαιων εληλυθεισαν προς την μαρθαν και μαριαμ ινα παραμυθησωνται αυτας περι του αδελφου [gnt]
One meaning of "
comfort" is
"consolation" as in
"telling a nice story".
The ancient Greek word
"παραμύθιο" ≈ "console" which comes from
"πάρα" ≈ "beyond" and
"μῦθος" ≈ "story".
In humanistic terms, consoling someone is that of saying something that goes beyond a story (and is not always true).
The modern Greek word
"παραμύθι" (pa-ra-MEE-thee) ≈ "folk tale".
15. Philosophy
In Greek philosophy, there was a distinction made having to do with "
myths" as "
stories" that were more false than true and "
history" that was more true than false.
Philosophers and poets |
philosophers |
poets, story tellers |

16. Bowels and mercies
Philippians 2:1 … if any bowels and mercies, [kjv]
ει τις ουν παρακλησις εν χριστω ει τι παραμυθιον αγαπης ει τις κοινωνια πνευματος ει τις σπλαγχνα και οικτιρμοι [gnt]
The Greek for "
bowels" has to do with "
gut feeling" and not "
wisdom" or "
head knowledge".
The Greek for "
mercies" comes from the ancient Greek word
"οἰκτρός" ≈ "pitiable, lamentable" but can also mean "
hesitation".
There is another Greek word for "
mercy". It is not clear why Paul used the word that he did in this verse.

20. Fellowship of the Spirit
Philippians 2:1 … if any fellowship of the Spirit… [kjv]
The Greek word for "
fellowship" means "
community" and
not "
partnership" or "
covenant".
Paul used "
citizenship", or "
conversation" in the
KJV (King James Version), a few verses before and will use it in the next chapter.
1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: … [kjv]
3:20 For our conversation is in heaven… [kjv]
The Philippians valued their Roman citizenship.
21. If part to then part
Philippians 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, [kjv]
Paul then continues with the conclusion of the "
bottom-up" sequence of "

22. Philippians 1:27
KJV: Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Greek: μονον αξιως του ευαγγελιου του χριστου πολιτευεσθε ινα ειτε ελθων και ιδων υμας ειτε απων ακουσω ακουω τα περι υμων οτι στηκετε εν ενι πνευματι μια ψυχη συναθλουντες τη πιστει του ευαγγελιου
23. Philippians 3:20
KJV: For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
Greek: ημων γαρ το πολιτευμα εν ουρανοις υπαρχει εξ ου και σωτηρα απεκδεχομεθα κυριον ιησουν χριστον
24. Philippians 2:2
Philippians 2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. [kjv]
The English "
joy" is "
favor" in the Greek.
Paul appears to be saying "
I did a favor to you by writing this. Now do me a favor." (and do what you are supposed to be doing).
The repeated use of "
one" throughout the letter indicates that the church (and leaders) are going in different (and incorrect) directions.
25. Bowels of Jesus Christ
Philippians 1:8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. [kjv]
μαρτυς γαρ μου ο θεος ως επιποθω παντας υμας εν σπλαγχνοις ιησου χριστου ιησου [gnt]

The Greek for passive "
record" is that of being an active "
witness".
The Greek word for "
bowels" has to do with an active "
gut feeling"or being "
prudent" with "
street smarts" rather than passive "
wisdom" that is "
head knowledge".
26. Philippians 1:8
KJV: For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
Greek: μαρτυς γαρ μου εστιν ο θεος ως επιποθω παντας υμας εν σπλαγχνοις ιησου χριστου ιησου
Latin: testis enim mihi est Deus quomodo cupiam omnes vos in visceribus Christi Iesu
27. Like minded
Philippians 2:2 …, that ye be like minded, …, of one mind. [kjv]
The Greek for "
minded" or "
mind" is that of being prudent, sensible and making trade-offs for the best overall success.
At Philippi, there appear to be many "
opinions" on what should be and is being done - and not all are in line with Christ.
28. One accord
Philippians 2:2 … being of one accord, …. [kjv]
The Greek for "
accord" is that of having the "
same soul" as in the first part of the word "
psychology".
Aristotle defined the Greek for "
soul" as actualizing a potential. Thus, to Aristotle, a plant had a "
soul".
From that point of view, "
one accord" is "
one ongoing purpose".
The English word
"accord" comes from the Latin word
"accordo" ≈ "be heart to heart with" from the Latin word
"cor" ≈ "heart".
29. One accord
Philippians 2:2 … being of one accord, …. [kjv]
The
KJV translation of this verse is the source of some jokes that it involved a Honda
Accord (a model of car).
Being of one accord.
Even David had his Triumph.
30. Philippians 2:2
KJV: Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Greek: πληρωσατε μου την χαραν ινα το αυτο φρονητε την αυτην αγαπην εχοντες συμψυχοι το εν φρονουντες
31. First law
Being "
like-minded" requires both loving God and loving neighbor (as yourself).
Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [kjv]
32. Like-minded
In being "
like-minded", one should seek to "
imitate" Christ and not "
impersonate" Christ.
33. Review
[kjv]
Restated.
If Christ is important to you, then return my favor and be like Christ, having the same heart, love and mind.
34. Matthew 22:37
KJV: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy haert, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Hebrew: ויאמר ישוע אליו ואהבת את יהוה אלהיך בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך ובכל מדעך׃
Greek: ο δε ιησους ειπεν εφη αυτω αγαπησεις κυριον τον θεον σου εν ολη τη καρδια σου και εν ολη τη ψυχη σου και εν ολη τη διανοια σου
