The prefix anti in place of against
by RS  admin@creationpie.com : 1024 x 640

1. The prefix anti in place of against
Verse routeMatthew 5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: [kjv]
Verse routeηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη οφθαλμον αντι οφθαλμου και οδοντα αντι οδοντος [gnt]

Which is it? No left turnThe English word and prefix "anti", from the Latin, means "against" or "opposite".
The ancient Greek word "ἀντί""in place of" and, if context permits, can mean "against" or "opposite". The same holds for the modern Greek word "αντί" (an-TEE) ≈ "in place of". Thus, the "anti-Christ" will set himself up "in place of" Christ, as in "impersonator" of Christ rather than just "imitator" of Christ.

2. Logical analysis
Verse routeMatthew 5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: [kjv]
Verse routeηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη οφθαλμον αντι οφθαλμου και οδοντα αντι οδοντος [gnt]

In Greek, when there are only two choices of concern (e.g., the sample space has two elements) then the "in place of" is similar to "opposite". In a two-person zero-sum game (where when one side wins the other loses), then the "in place of" is similar to "against" (only two choices).

Note that some modern Greek words that have been borrowed from languages such as English may have the meaning of "against".

3. Antonym
The English word "antonym", from 1870, means a word that has the opposite meaning of another word. It was constructed from the English prefix "anti" meaning "opposite" or "against" from the Greek prefix "anti" for "in place of" and the Greek word for "word" (or "noun").

The modern Greek word "αντωνυμία" (an-to-nee-MEE-a) ≈ "pronoun" comes from the Greek prefix "anti" and the Greek word for "noun". The meaning is that of a something used "in place of" a noun which is a pronoun.

4. The one Antichrist and many antichrists
The "antichrist" in the Bible is both a general term for those who put themselves "in place of Christ" and the "Antichrist" or "beast" (or many other names in the Bible) as a unique being in the end times of the Bible.

5. Verses
Consider the following verses and determine which fits better for the Greek "anti": "against", "opposite", "in place of" or something else.

Note that the KJV (King James Version) translation of "anti" as "for" is often influenced by the Latin word "pro""for" but can mean "instead of" as "in place of" which is a primary meaning of the ancient Greek.

6. Translations
Note that many English dictionaries and lexicons appear to be influenced by the "against" meaning in English.

Luther often uses the German word "um""about". Sometimes he uses the German word "mit""with".

7. Strongs - in place of

47. Idiom
Translation issueIn Strongs G473 entry, the related Greek word "ανθ" which appears in most places as "ανθ ων" and appears to be an idiom.

The ancient Greek word "ανθ""because", as translated in the GNT (Greek New Testament) and the LXX, is supposed to be a short form of "anti" but in most cases it is followed by the ancient Greek word "ὤν""to be, actual, real". This appears to be an idiom but it is not clear as to what it means.

I could not find any definitive answer but substituting the idea of "in place of the reality" appears to fit these verses. This might be a better way to think of it instead of "because".

An "antidote" is what one takes "in place of" the "dose" or what is given as poison.

The "antidote" for sin in general is mentioned by Ignatius in his letter to the Ephesians (part 20.2)

English: ... breaking one bread, which is the medicine of immortality, the antidote we take in order not to die but to live forever in Jesus Christ.
Greek: … ἕνα ἄρτον κλῶντες, ὅς ἐστιν φάρμακον ἀθανασιας, ἀντίδοτος τοῦ μὴ ἀποθανεῖν, ἀλλὰ ζῆν ἐν Ἰησοῦ Χριστῷ διὰ παντός. Ignatius to the Ephesians [20]
