Deuteronomy 5: Teach your children
1. Deuteronomy 5: Teach your children
Deuteronomy 6:9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. [kjv]
Before entering the "
promised land" about
600 years earlier, God had many instructions for the Israelites. Some of those involved "
teaching your children".
Part of this teaching resulted in the Hebrew "
mezuzah" that verses put on paper or parchment and put on a door post.
The prayer is usually the "
Shema". In particular, Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21.
2. Daniel
Despite being in captivity at a young age, Daniel and his friends had been taught well. Before entering the "promised land" about 600 years earlier, God had many instructions for the Israelites. Some of those involved "teaching your children".
3. Love God
4. Deuteronomy 6:4
KJV: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
5. Deuteronomy 6:5
KJV: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6. Deuteronomy 6:6
KJV: And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7. Modern churches
Some modern churches prefer to change "
Love your neighbor as yourself" (with negative feedback loop) to just "
Love your neighbor" or just "
Love others" and ignore any part of God with which they disagree.
8. Teach your children
Deuteronomy 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. [kjv]
This appears to be a mandate in favor of "
home schooling".
The most important factor in children learning is
parental involvement in the learning process.
9. Deuteronomy 6:7
KJV: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Brenton: And you shall teach them to your children, and you shall speak of them sitting in the house, and walking by the way, and lying down, and rising up.
10. Education
Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. Aristotle (Greek scientist and philosopher)
11. Education
To educate a person in the mind but not in morals is to educate a menace to society. Teddy Roosevelt (26th President of the United States)
12. School
Which alternative is the most reasonable?
Force all children to attend public school.
Allow children to be schooled according to the desires of their parents.
Force all children to be home schooled.
In all cases, the children should be learning something that is considered "
school" learning.
13. Song: Teach your children
The song "
Teach your children" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in 1969 is still a popular song.
14. Some lyrics
You, who are on the road.
Must have a code that you can live by.
And so, become yourself.
Because the past is just a goodbye.
Teach your children well.
Their father's hell did slowly go by.
And feed them on your dreams.
The one they pick's the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them, "Why?"
If they told you, you would cry.
So, just look at them and sigh.
And know they love you.
15. Teach your children
Deuteronomy 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. [kjv]
17. Proverbs
We find the advice from Deuteronomy to "
teach your children" repeated in Proverbs.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. [kjv]
18. Proverbs 22:5
KJV: Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.
19. Proverbs 22:6
KJV: Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
20. Proverbs 22:7
KJV: The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
21. Children
Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted. Vladimir Lenin (Russian revolutionary and politician)
In order to help in this process, letters were removed from the Russian alphabet to make it hard for children to read books printed before the takeover.
22. Paradox
The next verse is interesting.
Proverbs 22:7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. [kjv]
A paradox in this verse is that getting rid of the "
rich" will only create a new class of "
rich". This idea is appealing to anyone who is not rich in terms of worldly wealth.
Anyone who "
borrows" will be beholden to the "
lender". If one tries to undo this, no one would lend anything.
23. Example
Example: When the Soviet Union fixed prices so that everyone could afford food, the food was more expensive to produce that what it could be sold for. Why produce anything if you lose money on each item produces and sold?
24. Signs
Deuteronomy 6:8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. [kjv]
The Hebrew "
mezuzah" has verses put on paper or parchment and put on a door post. The prayer is usually the "
Shema".
25. Signs
26. Deuteronomy 6:8
KJV: And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
27. Deuteronomy 6:9
KJV: And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
28. Teachers
Being a teacher has responsibilities and, as James says, dangers.
James 3:1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. [kjv]
The Greek word translated as "
masters" by the
KJV (King James Version) is that of being a "
teacher".
The follow-on verses talk about the power of the "
tongue" for good or bad and the problems of "
eristic" reasoning and the danger it poses.
29. James 3:1
KJV: My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
30. Jewish teacher
John 20:16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. [kjv]
The Hebrew/Aramaic word "
Rabboni" was the word for "
teacher".
A modern equivalent, in the sports world, is to call someone "
coach".
31. John 20:16
KJV: Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
32. Teacher
Mark 10:51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. [kjv]
Here, the
KJV translates the word for "
teacher" in Hebrew/Aramaic as "
Lord".
33. Mark 10:51
KJV: And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.
34. Teaching
Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach. Aristotle (Greek scientist and philosopher)
A typical modern progression in teaching is the following, partly tongue-in-cheek but with some basis in reality.
Those that cannot do, teach.
Those that cannot teach, administrate.
