The English word
"radical" comes from the idea of a "
root" such as the root of a tree.
From about the time of the American Revolution in 1776, the English word
"radical" has meant a desired change in the fundamental or "
root" way in which something has been done.
In ancient Greece, the Greek word for "
root" was used for the mathematical concept of, for example, a square root.
Pythagoras used the square root as part of what is called the Pythagorean theorem.

4. Pythagoras and mystery
In about 500 B.C., Pythagoras had a secret society who membership was a mystery to anyone outside the group. It was a closed group and required a special initiation.
Pythagoras had a simple
proof (omitted) to show the irrationality of the
square root of two. This
secret was not to be revealed to anyone outside the group. The punishment for revealing this secret was death.
The Greek word for "
mystery" is based on the Greek word for "
initiation" as in a member to a group that is "
shut" until one is "
initiated". The term "
mystery cult" is still heard today.

This distance is called the Euclidean distance and uses the Pythagorean theorem. This distance idea is used in many areas of statistics in distributions, error analysis, etc.

A square root of a tree may not be obvious. How about a cube root? In the Bible:
Mountains represent empires.
Trees represent the human infrastructure of an empire.
The birds represent people who make nests in the tree.
The root represents the human leader of the tree.
A fox may have to settle for a den near the tree root.

The idea of a "
square meal" may have come about from the square plates used to serve food on ships.
The idea of a "
square deal" was part of President Theodore Roosevelt's domestic programs.
The idea of a "
new deal" was from President Franklin Roosevelt using a change to the term "
square deal".
8. Music: George Frederick Root
George Frederick Root (1820-1895) would later use the tune that he wrote for the American Civil War song "
Tramp, Tramp, Tramp" for another song. His pseudo-name was "
Wurzel", German for "
root" (his last name).
By the age of 13, he could play a tune on 13 instruments (and was proud of that fact).

The modern Greek word for rooted is based on the modern Greek word
"ρίζα" (REE-za) ≈ "root" which is cognate with the Latin word
"radix" ≈ "root" and the Latin word
"ramus" ≈ "branch" and the Old English word
"wyrt" ≈ "herb, plant".

12. Radical ideas
To promote something as "
radical", one should clearly point out the root idea that exists and is to be changed. Once this is done, one should clearly point out the new "
radical" idea, how it differs from the "
root" idea, and why the "
radical" new idea is better than the "
root" idea.
Being different is not always better. Sometimes it is necessary and needed. At other times, it is not necessary and may cause unintended side-effects and other damage.
