Written in 1747 and based on 1 John 4:16, the hymn "
Love divine, all loves excelling" was one of the most successful written by Englishman Charles Wesley (1707-1788), co-founder of Methodism.
This is hymn 21 in the hymn book.

They were ridiculed as having to many "methods" and took the derogatory attribution as their name.
Youngest son and 18th child of Samuel and Susanna Wesley
In 1735 went with his brother John Wesley to Georgia, returning to England shortly.
Became itinerant and field preacher.
Said to have written over 6,000 hymns.
