Luke 12: Barn-burner storage
1. Luke 12: Barn-burner storage
Saving up more than one needs may not be the best strategy - Biblically speaking.
Matthew 6:27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? [kjv]
In this context, the "
cubit" can be taken as a measure of the additional length of life.
Let us look at barns, storage, etc.
2. Storehouses and barns
We see this inability to add a "
cubit" to one's lifespan in the parable of the rich man building more storehouses in Luke 12.
Luke 12:16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: [kjv]
The Greek word for "
plentifully" is the Greek word for "
richly"

3. Luke 12:16
KJV: And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The gound of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
Greek: ειπεν δε παραβολην προς αυτους λεγων ανθρωπου τινος πλουσιου ευφορησεν η χωρα
4. Storing fruits
One can store "
fruits" for oneself rather than for others.
Luke 12:17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? [kjv]
A comparison might be made to Joseph in Egypt. Those "
fruits" stored were for the people at a later time.

5. Luke 12:17
KJV: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
6. Build for the future
One can work hard to build for the future.
Luke 12:18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. [kjv]
Discuss: How important is saving for retirement? Can this be at the expense of other priorities?
A pun can be made between storing in a "
barn" and facing a "
burn" (in the afterlife). In some places in the south, a "
barn" might be called a "
burn".
7. Luke 12:18
KJV: And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
8. Barley barn
9. Take it easy
One can work hard all their life to then take it easy.
Luke 12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. [kjv]
Discuss: Do you know anyone who worked their entire lives only for their retirement when they could sit back and do nothing? How long did they live doing nothing? Were we put here on this earth to do nothing?

10. Luke 12:19
KJV: And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
11. Time is up
When it is time to go, one cannot add a "
cubit" to that time.
Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? [kjv]
12. Luke 12:20
KJV: But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
13. Treasure
Luke 12:21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. [kjv]
What is your treasure? What is your God? Is there a difference?
Where is your treasure stored?
14. Luke 12:21
