1. He that hath ears

2. Hee-Haw Gossip Girls
Verse routeMatthew 13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse routeο εχων ωτα ακουετω [gnt]

The old Hee-Haw (running 1971-1991) song and dance by the Gossip Girls goes as follows.
Now, we're not ones to go 'round spreadin' rumors,
Why, really we're just not the gossipy kind,
No, you'll never hear one of us repeating gossip,
So you'd better be sure and listen close the first time!

3. He that hath ears
Before the "children playing music in the marketplace":
Verse routeMatthew 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse routeο εχων ωτα ακουετω [gnt]

In the middle of the "kingdom parables":
Verse route13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse routeο εχων ωτα ακουετω [gnt]

Say and hear
Jesus sometimes uses a phrase such as "he that hath an ear ... hear" . That "hear" in Greek assumes with "understanding". Otherwise, some clarification is needed. Jesus appears to use a phrase such as this when there is some deeper meaning that needs to be uncovered - often a play-on-word meaning in Greek. Jesus wants us to "hear" with our "ears". The ancient Greek word "φωνή""voice", as in "phonograph", and comes from "φως""light" and "νους""mind". That is, the "sound" of a "voice" is "light" into the "mind".

4. Playing by ear
Some people can hear the exact tones being played. That is, they have perfect pitch or absolute pitch.

Some people can add harmonize to a melody in real time. This is like improvisation but follows rules for such harmonization.

Rev. Rodney Shearer in 1969In the 1970's, Rodney Shearer, a pastor just starting out, could do such playing. Years later, in graduate school, I learned enough of music theory to understand how this can be done.

5. Mondegreens: misheard lyrics
A mondegreen is pun consisting of a misheard lyric or verse that sounds like something other than what was written.
The term was coined by Sylvia Wright in 1954 who as a child had heard the poem line "laid him on the green" as "Lady Mondegreen".

Here are some hymn titles or lines that are mondegreens.

6. Song: Open my eyes that I may see
Verse routePsalms 119:18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. [kjv]
Verse routeעיני … [he]
Verse routeαποκαλυψον τους οφθαλμους μου και κατανοησω τα θαυμασια σου εκ του νομου σου [lxx]

The hymn "Open my eyes that I may see" was based on Psalms 119:18. Additional verses cover the "ears", "mouth" and "mind".
It was written in 1895 by Clara Scott (American composer) . Growing up on a farm in the mid-west, the family moved to Chicago. She was the first woman to publish a volume of anthems. In 1897, returning from a funeral with some friends, she was thrown from her carriage and died instantly from the accident at age 55.

7. Verse 1
Open my eyes that I may see
glimpses of truth thou hast for me.
Place in my hands the wonderful key
that shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

8. Verse 2
Open my ears that I may hear
voices of truth thou sendest clear,
and while the wave notes fall on my ear,
ev’rything false will disappear.

Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my ears, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

9. Shibboleth: how something is said
Verse routeJudges 12:6 Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. … [kjv]
Verse routeκαι ειπαν αυτοις ειπατε δη συνθημα και ου κατηυθυναν του λαλησαι ουτως και επελαβοντο αυτων και εσφαξαν αυτους επι τας διαβασεις του ιορδανου και επεσαν εξ εφραιμ εν τω καιρω εκεινω δυο τεσσαρακοντα χιλιαδες [lxx]
Verse routeשבלתסבלת … [he]

Originally, from the book of Joshua in the OT (Old Testament), a "shibboleth" was a sound that a particular group of people have trouble pronouncing and that was used as a form of audible password or authentication mechanism in battle of identifying "friend" or "foe".

Today, the meaning has been generalized to be any sound that distinguishes a group of people.

10. Matthew 11:15
Verse routeMatthew 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse routeο εχων ωτα ακουετω [gnt]

After this verse, Jesus makes a short statement that appear to have three meanings.

11. Jesus speaking
It appears that Jesus uses play-on-word meanings when he is speaking in front of the general public and the religious authorities. Both Greek and Aramaic were spoken and understood by most everyone. The religious establishment appears to have spent a lot of time learning to read and write Hebrew (no longer spoken) and tended to look down on Greek. Therefore, they understood when Jesus used Greek but often did not follow the play-on-word sayings. Most of the general public, however, would have followed the play-on-words without difficulty.

40. Hearing and listening: CAPD
In English, there is a distinction between "hear" a sound and "listen" to a sound with understanding.

Mother to her husband and sons: You all can hear fine. You just don't listen.

CAPD (Cognitive Audio Processing Disorder) is a condition where sounds are heard by the ear and get transmitted to the brain but do not get processed reliably so that parts of what is heard is not decoded.

Treatment can help but there is no known way to cure the condition.

Husbands: This may be a reason, but does not provide an excuse, for not listening to your wife.

41. Greek
The word "sound" in Greek usually refers to a sound that is understood. If that is not the case, there is some clarification needed.

Verse routeMatthew 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: [kjv]
Verse routeauditu audietisintellegetis … [v]

Latin: et adimpletur eis prophetia Esaiae dicens auditu audietis et non intellegetis et videntes videbitis et non videbitis

43. Strongs

44. Light
The modern Greek word "φως" (fos) ≈ "light" .

The English word and chemical element "phosphorus" comes from the ancient Greek word "φωσφόρος""bearer of light" whose suffix comes from the ancient Greek word "φέρω""bear, carry".

The Latin word "lucifer""bearer of light, lucifer" has a somewhat different meaning.

45. Strongs
The Greek has many variations of the word for "hear".

46. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 The moving ethics of tinnitus and itching ears
Verse route2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; [kjv]

What does it mean to have "itching" "ears"?

Can one "scratch" an "itch"? Can one "itch" a "scratch"? Let us "scratch" the surface.

Paul warns Timothy, Bishop of Ephesus, that people will eventually get "teachers" that teach them what they want to hear - having "itching" "ears".
