Revelation: To count on ears
1. He that hath ears
Before the "
children playing music in the marketplace":
Matthew 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
ο εχων ωτα ακουετω [gnt]
In the middle of the "
kingdom parables":
13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
ο εχων ωτα ακουετω [gnt]
Jesus sometimes uses a phrase such as "
he that hath an ear ... hear" . That "
hear" in Greek assumes with "
understanding". Otherwise, some clarification is needed. Jesus appears to use a phrase such as this when there is some deeper meaning that needs to be uncovered - often a play-on-word meaning in Greek. Jesus wants us to "
hear" with our "
ears". The ancient Greek word
"φωνή" ≈ "voice", as in "
phonograph", and comes from
"φως" ≈ "light" and
"νους" ≈ "mind". That is, the "
sound" of a "
voice" is "
light" into the "
mind".
2. Revelation: To count on ears
The warning about "
ears" and "
hearing" are at the end of
each of the
seven letters to a church in Revelation.
There appears to be some play on words and a form of a joke, so to speak, in the patterns of the suffix of the Greek word.
The ancient Greek word
"ακουσατω" ≈ "let him hear". This
exact word for "
let him hear" appears
8 times in the
GNT (Greek New Testament) and only in Revelation. It appears
5 times in the
LXX (Septuagint).
Other verbs with a
different root but with the
same suffix "
σατω" appear
3 other times in Revelation (twice in one verse) and only
6 other times in the rest of the
GNT (in Luke and 1 Peter and James).
3. Joshua 6:10
Joshua 6:10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout. [kjv]
τω δε λαω ενετειλατο ιησους λεγων μη βοατε μηδε ακουσατω μηθεις υμων την φωνην εως αν ημεραν αυτος διαγγειλη αναβοησαι και τοτε αναβοησετε [lxx]
4. Joshua 6:10
KJV: And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

5. 1 Samuel 26:19
1 Samuel 26:19 Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods. [kjv]
και νυν ακουσατω δη ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς το ρημα του δουλου αυτου ει ο θεος επισειει σε επ εμε οσφρανθειη θυσιας σου και ει υιοι ανθρωπων επικαταρατοι ουτοι ενωπιον κυριου οτι εξεβαλον με σημερον μη εστηρισθαι εν κληρονομια κυριου λεγοντες πορευου δουλευε θεοις ετεροις [lxx]
6. 1 Samuel 26:19
KJV: Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.

9. Isaiah 50:10
Isaiah 50:10 Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God. [kjv]
τις εν υμιν ο φοβουμενος τον κυριον ακουσατω της φωνης του παιδος αυτου οι πορευομενοι εν σκοτει ουκ εστιν αυτοις φως πεποιθατε επι τω ονοματι κυριου και αντιστηρισασθε επι τω θεω [lxx]
10. Isaiah 50:10
KJV: Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.
Hebrew: מי בכם ירא יהוה שמע בקול עבדו אשר הלך חשכים ואין נגה לו יבטח בשם יהוה וישען באלהיו׃
Greek: τις εν υμιν ο φοβουμενος τον κυριον ακουσατω της φωνης του παιδος αυτου οι πορευομενοι εν σκοτει ουκ εστιν αυτοις φως πεποιθατε επι τω ονοματι κυριου και αντιστηρισασθε επι τω θεω
11. Jeremiah 20:16
Jeremiah 20:16 And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide; [kjv]
εστω ο ανθρωπος εκεινος ως αι πολεις ας κατεστρεψεν κυριος εν θυμω και ου μετεμεληθη ακουσατω κραυγης το πρωι και αλαλαγμου μεσημβριας [lxx]
The word translated as "
repent" is the Greek word for "
changed behavior". The Greek word for "
think after" what you are doing is often translated as "
repent" in the
GNT.
12. Jeremiah 20:16
KJV: And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;
Hebrew: והיה האיש ההוא כערים אשר הפך יהוה ולא נחם ושמע זעקה בבקר ותרועה בעת צהרים׃
Greek: εστω ο ανθρωπος εκεινος ως αι πολεις ας κατεστρεψεν κυριος εν θυμω και ου μετεμεληθη ακουσατω κραυγης το πρωι και αλαλαγμου μεσημβριας
13. Matthew 13:33 Play on words
Matthew 13:33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. [kjv]
αλλην παραβολην ελαλησεν αυτοις ομοια εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων ζυμη ην λαβουσα γυνη ενεκρυψεν εις αλευρου σατα τρια εως ου εζυμωθη ολον [gnt]
Here are some play on word possibilities for (less usual)
"measures" "three". These do not work for the (more usual)
"three" "measures" or with another word for
"measures".
Can you think of ways that these allusions might be
"encrypted" in the
"wheat" or
"meal"?
☐ Greek: σατα τρια (sata tria) as "measures three" (as written)
☐ Greek: σαταν τρια (satan tria) as "satan three"
☐ Greek: σαταρίς τρια (sataris tria) as "woman's headress three"
☐ Greek: στατηρα τρια (statira tria) as "temple tax coin three"
☐ Greek: στατηρα (statira) as "temple tax coin"
The allusions meld together and need not be exact. The Greek for
"wheat" or
"meal" appears to be a play on word allusion to "
freedom".
14. Part of speech: V-AMA-3S
Let us
count the occurrences of the Greek

There is an incomplete play on words of the Greek suffix and word "
σατω τι" with "
Satan". This play on words will be completed on the ninth occurrence in Revelation.

29. Revelation 13:9 Ears to hear
8. The same phrasing for "
ears" and "
hearing" is used in Revelation 13.
Revelation 13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear. [kjv]
ει τις εχει ους ακουσατω [gnt]
Perhaps it is important that there is
no play on words with "
Satan" in this verse. This corresponds to "
at the throne".
Why are we counting the appearance of the
suffix "
σατω" in Revelation?
30. Revelation 13:9
KJV: If any man have an ear, let him hear.
Greek: ει τις εχει ους ακουσατω
31. Revelation 13:18
Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. [kjv]
ωδε η σοφια εστιν ο εχων νουν ψηφισατω τον αριθμον του θηριου αριθμος γαρ ανθρωπου εστιν και ο αριθμος αυτου εξακοσιοι εξηκονταεξ [gnt]
There
is a play on words with "
Satan" in this verse which corresponds to the "
bowl" "
judgments".
32. Revelation 13:18
Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. [kjv]

The other play on words for this word is that of, literally, the command to "
count" "
σατω" or "
vote" "
Satan".
This command to "
count" "
σατω" provided the motivation to "
count" "
σατω".
33. Revelation 13:18
KJV: Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
Greek: ωδε η σοφια εστιν ο εχων τον νουν ψηφισατω τον αριθμον του θηριου αριθμος γαρ ανθρωπου εστιν και ο αριθμος αυτου χξς εξακοσιοι εξηκοντα εξ
34. Revelation 22:11

ο αδικων αδικησατω ετι και ο ρυπαρος ρυπανθητω ετι και ο δικαιος δικαιοσυνην ποιησατω ετι και ο αγιος αγιασθητω ετι [gnt]
The "
σατω" appears
twice in this verse but there is
no play on words with "
Satan" in these occurrences which correspond to the "
new heaven and new earth".
35. Revelation 22:11
KJV: He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

36. Build-up to the punch line play on words
There appears to be a build-up to the "
count Satan!" play on words in Revelation 13:18.

What might be the purpose of telling the reader to "
count" "
σατω" with certain play on words with "
Satan"? Might it be related to the number of "
666" in the
same verse, Revelation 13:18?
The other places in the
GNT that this suffix appears, Luke and 1 Peter, do not have words related to "
hearing" or "
counting".

 |
In Greek, the letter "
ξ" is a combination of "
κσ" or "
ks" which has the "
s" at the end. English has trouble with that sound.
To start a word, write "x" and use a "z" sound as in "Xerox", "xylophone", etc.
To end a word, write "x" as in "box", "fox", etc.
45. 1 Peter 3:11
KJV: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
Greek: εκκλινατω δε απο κακου και ποιησατω αγαθον ζητησατω ειρηνην και διωξατω αυτην

48. Translations
Philippians 4:8 … think on these things. [kjv]
… λογιζεσθε [gnt]
… cogitate [v]
The ancient Greek word
"λογίζομαι" ≈ "count, reckon". In Philippians, Paul provides a hint to look for codes. That is, "
logically calculate" on the
words provided. This advice is not evident when the word for "
logically calculate" is
translated as "
think".
NIV (New International Version):
… - think about such things.
NLT (New Living Translation):
… Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
49. Philippians 4:8 Logical calculation
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. [kjv]
το λοιπον αδελφοι οσα εστιν αληθη οσα σεμνα οσα δικαια οσα αγνα οσα προσφιλη οσα ευφημα ει τις αρετη και ει τις επαινος ταυτα λογιζεσθε [gnt]
In Philippians 4:8, Paul lists a number of categories in which one should do some "
logical calculation". The ancient Greek word
"λογίζομαι" ≈ "count, reckon". The Latin Vulgate influenced this meaning to be that of "
thinking". What might happen if one does some "
logical calculation"?
The ancient Greek word
"λοιπον" ≈ "the rest, remainder". Paul is not finishing. He is continuing to the remainder of topics, groups of people, etc.

Pastors may try to fit the words into a Christian lifestyle.
We are asked to "logically" "calculate" or "reason" about the words, not "think".
Start by dividing the Greek words into syllables. There may be other ways.
|
Note: The "
Greek" may be a female name and relate to the use of female names as codes in the previous verses. Another connection might be a feminine form of the ancient Greek word
"Λῆμνος" ≈ "Lumnos" as an island and coming from a Semitic word for "
white".
