Planets as wandering stars
1. Planets as wandering stars
Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. [kjv]
πολλοι γαρ ελευσονται επι τω ονοματι μου λεγοντες εγω ειμι ο χριστος και πολλους πλανησουσιν [gnt]
How does a "
sheep" know if it has gone or is going "
astray"?
The ancient Greek word
"πλάνη" ≈ "wandering, roaming" and, figuratively,
"going astray" or
"in error". as in wandering off-target. The English word
"planet" comes from this Greek word as a shortened form of
"wandering star" since planets were considered wandering stars. The modern Greek word
"πλανήτης" (pla-NEE-tees) ≈ "planet".
Discuss: Consider the billions of people throughout the ages. Are the "
many" a few insurrectionists from the first century or so who led a few thousand followers?
2. Matthew 24:5
KJV: For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Greek: πολλοι γαρ ελευσονται επι τω ονοματι μου λεγοντες εγω ειμι ο χριστος και πολλους πλανησουσιν
3. Jude 1:13 Wandering stars
Jude 1:13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. [kjv]
κυματα αγρια θαλασσης επαφριζοντα τας εαυτων αισχυνας αστερες πλανηται οις ο ζοφος του σκοτους εις αιωνα τετηρηται [gnt]
… sidera errantia … [v]
The Greek word "
planet" was a shorted form of "
wandering star". Jude uses these two words together.
4. Jude 1:13
KJV: Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
Greek: κυματα αγρια θαλασσης επαφριζοντα τας εαυτων αισχυνας αστερες πλανηται οις ο ζοφος του σκοτους εις τον αιωνα τετηρηται
Latin: fluctus feri maris despumantes suas confusiones sidera errantia quibus procella tenebrarum in aeternum servata est
Wycliffe: wawis of the woode see, fomynge out her confusiouns; errynge sterris, to whiche the tempest of derknessis is kept with outen ende.
5. Deuteronomy 4:19 Wandering stars
Deuteronomy 4:19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. [kjv]
και μη αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον και ιδων τον ηλιον και την σεληνην και τους αστερας και παντα τον κοσμον του ουρανου πλανηθεις προσκυνησης αυτοις και λατρευσης αυτοις α απενειμεν κυριος ο θεος σου αυτα πασιν τοις εθνεσιν τοις υποκατω του ουρανου [lxx]
Those two Greek words only appear in the same verse in one other place, in the
LXX (Septuagint), and they are not adjacent.
The idea of "
planet" does not appear to be present. For completeness, here is the verse. The idea appears to be that of deviating or being deceived as in "
driven".
The modern Greek word
"πλάνη" (PLA-nee) ≈ "fallacy" as in an erroneous belief or opinion.
A related word is the Latin word
"planus" ≈ "flat, even, level" and is the source of the English word
"plain".
6. Deuteronomy 4:19
KJV: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.
7. Seeing deception
Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. [kjv]
και αποκριθεις ο ιησους ειπεν αυτοις βλεπετε μη τις υμας πλανηση [gnt]
Mark 13:5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you: [kjv]
ο δε ιησους ηρξατο λεγειν αυτοις βλεπετε μη τις υμας πλανηση [gnt]
Luke 21:8 And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. [kjv]
ο δε ειπεν βλεπετε μη πλανηθητε πολλοι γαρ ελευσονται επι τω ονοματι μου λεγοντες εγω ειμι και ο καιρος ηγγικεν μη πορευθητε οπισω αυτων [gnt]
What does it mean to be "
deceived"? A deception happens when what you perceive as reality is not actually a reality. Erroneous perceptions can cause us to think differently from what is actually true.
The Greek word used here by Jesus is «
βλέπετε» which literally means "
see" and the Greek word «
πλανηση» means "
deceive" from which we get the word "
planet" as a "
wandering" star.
8. Matthew 24:4
KJV: And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Greek: και αποκριθεις ο ιησους ειπεν αυτοις βλεπετε μη τις υμας πλανηση
9. Mark 13:5
KJV: And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:
Greek: ο δε ιησους αποκριθεις αυτοις ηρξατο λεγειν αυτοις βλεπετε μη τις υμας πλανηση
10. Luke 21:8
KJV: And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.
Greek: ο δε ειπεν βλεπετε μη πλανηθητε πολλοι γαρ ελευσονται επι τω ονοματι μου λεγοντες οτι εγω ειμι και ο καιρος ηγγικεν μη ουν πορευθητε οπισω αυτων
11. Ephesians 4:14 Deceptions
Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; [kjv]
ινα μηκετι ωμεν νηπιοι κλυδωνιζομενοι και περιφερομενοι παντι ανεμω της διδασκαλιας εν τη κυβεια των ανθρωπων εν πανουργια προς την μεθοδειαν της πλανης [gnt]
Paul talks of deception in various ways in Ephesians 4:14. The ancient Greek word
"μέθοδος" ≈ "following after, pursuit" and is used here for as "
deception". The
KJV (King James Version) translates this as
"lie in wait". Who are the "
they"?
The ancient Greek word
"πλάνη" ≈ "wandering, roaming" and, figuratively,
"going astray" or
"in error". as in wandering off-target.
The ancient Greek word
"πανοῦργος" ≈ "ready to try anything" and is often translated as
"crafty".
12. Ephesians 4:14 Play on words
The following is conducive to a play on words in the Greek. Paul appears to do this once in Ephesians 4:14. The Greek for "
doctrine" is that of "
teaching".
"ἄνεμος" ≈ "wind, breeze, gale" and often used in verses with Satin or the devil as "accuser" throwing/breathing accusations.
"ἄνομος" ≈ "without law" which could be "lawless", "impious", "unmusical", "illegal", etc.
English: ... carried about by every wind of teaching.
Play on words: ... carried about by every without-law teaching.
Any teaching that goes against "
Loving God" or "
Loving neighbor as yourself" would be "
without-law" or "
against-law".
13. Ephesians 4:14
KJV: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Greek: ινα μηκετι ωμεν νηπιοι κλυδωνιζομενοι και περιφερομενοι παντι ανεμω της διδασκαλιας εν τη κυβεια των ανθρωπων εν πανουργια προς την μεθοδειαν της πλανης
14. Astray
The English word
"astray" comes from the French word
"estraier" ≈ "stray" which comes from the Latin words
"extra" ≈ "beyond" and the Latin word
"vagari" ≈ "wander, stray" as in the English word
"vagrant". The English word
"extravagant" comes, through French and Latin, from the same two words.
Matthew 15:38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children. [kjv]
οι δε εσθιοντες ησαν τετρακισχιλιοι ανδρες χωρις γυναικων και παιδιων [gnt]
… extra … [v]
21:39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. [kjv]
και λαβοντες αυτον εξεβαλον εξω του αμπελωνος και απεκτειναν [gnt]
… extra … [v]
15. Matthew 15:38
KJV: And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
Greek: οι δε εσθιοντες ησαν τετρακισχιλιοι ανδρες χωρις γυναικων και παιδιων
Latin: erant autem qui manducaverant quattuor milia hominum extra parvulos et mulieres
16. Matthew 21:39
KJV: And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
Greek: και λαβοντες αυτον εξεβαλον εξω του αμπελωνος και απεκτειναν
Latin: et adprehensum eum eiecerunt extra vineam et occiderunt
17. Periods
Joshua 6:16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city. [kjv]
και τη περιοδω τη εβδομη εσαλπισαν οι ιερεις και ειπεν ιησους τοις υιοις ισραηλ κεκραξατε παρεδωκεν γαρ κυριος υμιν την πολιν [lxx]
The phrase "
it came to pass at" might be phrased as "
at the period of".
A English word "
period" is an unspecified amount of time. Something is "
periodic" if it repeats. The root is «
περί» which means "
about" or "
around", as in "
perimeter", which is, literally a "
way around".
The modern Greek word "περί" (peh-REE) ≈ "about, around".
The modern Greek word "όδος" (O-thos) ≈ "way, road".
18. Joshua 6:16
KJV: And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.
Hebrew: ויהי בפעם השביעית תקעו הכהנים בשופרות ויאמר יהושע אל העם הריעו כי נתן יהוה לכם את העיר׃
Greek: και τη περιοδω τη εβδομη εσαλπισαν οι ιερεις και ειπεν ιησους τοις υιοις ισραηλ κεκραξατε παρεδωκεν γαρ κυριος υμιν την πολιν
19. Zechariah 1:10
Zechariah 1:10 And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth. [kjv]
και απεκριθη ο ανηρ ο εφεστηκως ανα μεσον των ορεων και ειπεν προς με ουτοι εισιν ους εξαπεσταλκεν κυριος του περιοδευσαι την γην [lxx]
20. Zechariah 1:10

21. Zechariah 6:7
Zechariah 6:7 And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth. [kjv]
και οι ψαροι εξεπορευοντο και επεβλεπον του πορευεσθαι του περιοδευσαι την γην και ειπεν πορευεσθε και περιοδευσατε την γην και περιωδευσαν την γην [lxx]
Here to word appears twice in the same verse.
22. Zechariah 6:7
KJV: And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth.
Hebrew: והאמצים יצאו ויבקשו ללכת להתהלך בארץ ויאמר לכו התהלכו בארץ ותתהלכנה בארץ׃
Greek: και οι ψαροι εξεπορευοντο και επεβλεπον του πορευεσθαι του περιοδευσαι την γην και ειπεν πορευεσθε και περιοδευσατε την γην και περιωδευσαν την γην
23. Earth
The modern Greek word
"γη" (ghee) ≈ "earth", from which we get "
geometry", "
geology", "
geopolitical", etc.
Here we see the word «
γην» for "
earth".
24. Romans 10:18
Romans 10:18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. [kjv]
αλλα λεγω μη ουκ ηκουσαν μενουνγε εις πασαν την γην εξηλθεν ο φθογγος αυτων και εις τα περατα της οικουμενης τα ρηματα αυτων [gnt]
25. Romans 10:18
KJV: But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
Greek: αλλα λεγω μη ουκ ηκουσαν μενουνγε εις πασαν την γην εξηλθεν ο φθογγος αυτων και εις τα περατα της οικουμενης τα ρηματα αυτων

28. Revelation 16:14
Revelation 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. [kjv]
εισιν γαρ πνευματα δαιμονιων ποιουντα σημεια α εκπορευεται επι τους βασιλεις της οικουμενης ολης συναγαγειν αυτους εις τον πολεμον της ημερας της μεγαλης του θεου του παντοκρατορος [gnt]

31. Barnabas and Paul
In Acts 14:11-12, the people attribute god-like attributes to Barnabas and Paul.
Barnabas as Roman "Jupiter" or Greek "Zeus".
Paul as Roman "Mercury" or Greek "Hermes".
These important gods were used as names of planets.
32. Sky and heaven
*G3772 *275 οὐρανός (oo-ran-os') : perhaps from the same as G3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity):--air, heaven(-ly), sky.
The ancient Greek word
"ουρανός" ≈ "sky, heaven".
The English word for the planet
"Uranus", discovered by William Hershel in 1781, is from the ancient Greek word
"Οὐρανός" ≈ "Uranus" who was a god in Greek mythology.
Kingdom of "heaven".
Kingdom of the "sky".
