A peace of the mouth of the sword
1. A peace of the mouth of the sword
2. A piece of the sword of truth
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. [kjv]
μη νομισητε οτι ηλθον βαλειν ειρηνην επι την γην ουκ ηλθον βαλειν ειρηνην αλλα μαχαιραν [gnt]
… pacem … pacem … gladium [v]
Are people (believers and non-believers) ever offended by the word of God?
Did Jesus come to bring
"peace" or to bring a "
sword"? The Latin word
"gladium" ≈ "sword" and is the source of the English word "
gladiator".
As with any saying, there can be more than one meaning and all meanings could be true (in some sense, figurative, literal, etc.).
3. Matthew 10:34
KJV: Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Greek: μη νομισητε οτι ηλθον βαλειν ειρηνην επι την γην ουκ ηλθον βαλειν ειρηνην αλλα μαχαιραν
Latin: nolite arbitrari quia venerim mittere pacem in terram non veni pacem mittere sed gladium
Wessex: Ne wene ge þt ic come sybbe on eorþan to saendenne. ne com ic sybbe to sendenne ac swurd.
Wycliffe: Nile ye deme, that Y cam to sende pees in to erthe; Y cam not to sende pees, but swerd.
Tyndale: Thynke not that I am come to sende peace into the erth. I came not to send peace but a swearde.
Gothic: nih ahjaith thatei qemjau lagjan gawairthi ana airtha; ni qam lagjan gawairthi, ak hairu.
Luther: Ihr sollt nicht wähnen, daß ich kommen sei, Frieden zu senden auf Erden. Ich bin nicht kommen, Frieden zu senden, sondern das Schwert.
Slavonic: Не мните, яко приидох воврещи мир на землю: не приидох воврещи мир, но мечь:
Russian: Не думайте, что Я пришел принести мир на землю; не мир пришел Я принести, но меч,
Spanish: No penséis que he venido para meter paz en la tierra; no he venido para meter paz, sino espada.
4. Matthew 10:35 Sword
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. [kjv]
ηλθον γαρ διχασαι ανθρωπον κατα του πατρος αυτου και θυγατερα κατα της μητρος αυτης και νυμφην κατα της πενθερας αυτης [gnt]
… separare … [v]
In the
GNT (Greek New Testament), the word "
sword" in the Greek appears to refer to a generic sword.
The Greek "machaira" sword was one-edged and longer.
The Roman "gladius" sword was two-edged and shorter.
5. Matthew 10:35
KJV: For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Greek: ηλθον γαρ διχασαι ανθρωπον κατα του πατρος αυτου και θυγατερα κατα της μητρος αυτης και νυμφην κατα της πενθερας αυτης
Latin: veni enim separare hominem adversus patrem suum et filiam adversus matrem suam et nurum adversus socrum suam
6. Luke 12:51 Division
Luke 12:51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: [kjv]
δοκειτε οτι ειρηνην παρεγενομην δουναι εν τη γη ουχι λεγω υμιν αλλ η διαμερισμον [gnt]
… pacem … terram … separationem [v]
Luke makes the above distinction more clear, perhaps not to give the Romans the wrong idea. Because of the Roman continual warlike use of the sword, Luke changes "
sword" to "
division".
Whenever and wherever the truth of Jesus is brought into a group, there is often division.
Part of truth discernment is not being deceived by logical fallacies and being able to explain errors in logical reasoning to others so that they are not deceived.
7. Luke 12:51
Luke 12:51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: [kjv]
δοκειτε οτι ειρηνην παρεγενομην δουναι εν τη γη ουχι λεγω υμιν αλλ η διαμερισμον [gnt]
… separationem [v]
… debate. [ty]
Luke appears to have been written, in part, as the trial documents for Paul in his court hearing in Rome.
The word "
sword" might not read well with the Romans, so the word used her is "
division". Whenever the truth (reality) of Jesus is brought into a group, division results, not "
peace".
Tyndale calls it a "
debate".
One Modern Greek Version (not shown here) changed the word "
sword" ins Matthew to the modern Greek word for "
division" (following the reference in Luke in the KJV, but not the original Greek) even though the Greek word used for "
sword" has not changed.
8. Luke 12:51
KJV: Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
Greek: δοκειτε οτι ειρηνην παρεγενομην δουναι εν τη γη ουχι λεγω υμιν αλλ η διαμερισμον
Latin: putatis quia pacem veni dare in terram non dico vobis sed separationem
Tyndale: Suppose ye that I am come to sende peace on erth? I tell you naye: but rather debate.
Russian: Думаете ли вы, что Я пришел дать мир земле? Нет, говорю вам, но разделение;
9. Hebrews 4:12
KJV: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Greek: ζων γαρ ο λογος του θεου και ενεργης και τομωτερος υπερ πασαν μαχαιραν διστομον και διικνουμενος αχρι μερισμου ψυχης τε και πνευματος αρμων τε και μυελων και κριτικος ενθυμησεων και εννοιων καρδιας
10. Offenses
Are you offended by what people say?
Are you offended by what the God says though the Bible?
Can you distinguish between the messenger and the sender of the message?
Why did the Jews kill the true prophets sent to them?
Does this happen today for anyone testifying to the truth?
11. Ephesians 6: Defending the full armor of God
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. [kjv]
ενδυσασθε την πανοπλιαν του θεου προς το δυνασθαι υμας στηναι προς τας μεθοδειας του διαβολου [gnt]
Paul concludes his letter to the Ephesians in chapter 6 by talking about "
clothing" oneself with the full "
armor" of God. One should
"stand" up for Jesus against the
"wiles" or
"methods" as in "
following after the path" of the
"devil" or
"accuser".
All the armaments mentioned are
defensive and require
teamwork and not individual combat. The exception is the sword (of truth, of the spirit, etc.) which can be both an offensive and a defensive weapon.
This conclusion has many military allusions but, as a conclusion, each refers to things already said in the letter and not completely new ideas.
12. Ephesians 6:17 Sword of truth
Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: [kjv]
και την περικεφαλαιαν του σωτηριου δεξασθε και την μαχαιραν του πνευματος ο εστιν ρημα θεου [gnt]
Paul uses allusions to military terminology without advocating any physical violence, but some churches have removed the hymn "
Stand up, stand up for Jesus", based on these verses in Ephesians, because of militaristic terminology.
You should add the sword of truth to your arsenal of weapons.
13. Ephesians 6:17
KJV: And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Greek: και την περικεφαλαιαν του σωτηριου δεξασθε και την μαχαιραν του πνευματος ο εστιν ρημα θεου
Latin: et galeam salutis adsumite et gladium Spiritus quod est verbum Dei
Wycliffe: And take ye the helm of helthe, and the swerd of the Goost, that is, the word of God.
Luther: Und nehmet den Helm des Heils und das Schwert des Geistes, welches ist das Wort Gottes.
Slavonic: и шлем спасения восприимите, и мечь духовныи, иже есть Глаголгол Божий:
Russian: и шлем спасения возьмите, и меч духовный, который есть Слово Божие.
Spanish: y tomad el yelmo de la salvación, y la espada del Espíritu, que es la palabra de Dios;
14. Hebrews 4:12
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. [kjv]
ζων γαρ ο λογος του θεου και ενεργης και τομωτερος υπερ πασαν μαχαιραν διστομον και διικνουμενος αχρι μερισμου ψυχης και πνευματος αρμων τε και μυελων και κριτικος ενθυμησεων και εννοιων καρδιας [gnt]

17. Matthew 5:9 Making and appeasing peaceful peacemakers
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
What is peace? What is a peacemaker?
Is being a peacemaker good or bad?
Is making something good or bad?
Who is it doing the calling?
Is there any
conscientious objection to continuing on the topic of making
peace? Let us
piece together some ideas.
These questions arise from Matthew 5:9 in the Beatitudes, given on a mountain to the disciples with both
altitude and
attitude. Is that right,
dude?
18. A peace of the mouth of the sword
Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. [kjv]
και εχων εν τη δεξια χειρι αυτου αστερας επτα και εκ του στοματος αυτου ρομφαια διστομος οξεια εκπορευομενη και η οψις αυτου ως ο ηλιος φαινει εν τη δυναμει αυτου [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"στόμα" ≈ "mouth" and could mean the "
face", source of a body of water, opening in the earth, the front opening of something, etc. An interesting idiom in the Greek is that of letting the "
mouth of the sword" do the talking. This might be similar to saying "
let my sword do the talking".
The "
sword" here is, literally, a "
two"
"mouth" "
sword".

20. Research
This page needs some more research. It is not clear if the words for "edge" and "mouth" come from the same, one came from the other, if they arose separately and became similar, etc. It is interesting nevertheless.
21. Matthew 5:2
Matthew 5:2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, [kjv]
και ανοιξας το στομα αυτου εδιδασκεν αυτους λεγων [gnt]
… os … [v]
… boca… [es]
At the start of the Beatitudes in Matthew 5, Jesus opens his "
mouth" and teaches.
The ancient Greek word
"στόμα" ≈ "opening, mouth" and is the source of the English word "
stomach" (that which contains food entering from the mouth). The modern Greek word
"στόμα" (STO-ma) ≈ "mouth, person". The English has the same type of idiom of a mouth being a "
person" in having six mouths to feed in a large family.
The Spanish word
"boca" ≈ "mouth" and is part of the city name in Florida called
"Boca" "
Raton" or, literally, "
Rat's"
"mouth".
22. Matthew 5:2
KJV: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

24. German mouth
25. Stomata
The "
stomata" in a plant is an opening of a leaf to allow gases in and out.
The ancient Greek word is related to the Old English word
"stemn" ≈ "voice, utterance" which is the source of the English word "
stem" as the source of something that comes out of something.
In English, there are similar idioms whereby the mouth is on opening.
The "mouth of the cave".
The "mouth of a hole" (or "sinkhole").
