Matthew 5:9 Making and appeasing peaceful peacemakers
1. Matthew 5:9 Making and appeasing peaceful peacemakers
2. Big picture of prevenient grace
Some have pointed out a
difference from what Wesley stated and believed and what is being done today.
The Latin word
"praeveniens" ≈ "coming before, preceding" as in the "
porch" analogy. Intellectual ideas:
Calvin: depraved humans, predestination only, no free will
Arminius: depraved humans, little free will, grace only of predestined by God
Wesley: some more room for free will for sinful man
Modern changes: (some ideas)
Wesley: Be convicted by sin and guilt, repent, believe, belong and behave.
Today: Behave and appear to want to belong and believe.
3. 1 Thessalonians 4:15
4. 1 Thessalonians 2:15-16
1 Thessalonians 2:15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: [kjv]
2:16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. [kjv]
κωλυοντων ημας τοις εθνεσιν λαλησαι ινα σωθωσιν εις το αναπληρωσαι αυτων τας αμαρτιας παντοτε εφθασεν δε επ αυτους η οργη εις τελος [gnt]
… praevenit … in finem [v]
KJV: the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost
Greek paraphrase: the wrath has overtaken them into a purpose
The ancient Greek word
"τέλος" ≈ "end, purpose". Aristotle gave this word a special meaning in Greek philosophy as part of his four causes. The last of the four causes is that of a purpose or end towards which the cause progresses as a goal.
Discuss: How does using the meaning of the Greek words fit into the idea of
prevenient (the Latin word used here)
grace?
5. Beatitudes summary
Here is a quick summary of the Beatitudes. Each starts with "
Blessed are".
1. poor in spirit - theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
2. they that mourn - shall be comforted.
3. meek - shall inherit the earth
4. those that hunger and thirst for righteousness - shall be satisfied
5. merciful - shall obtain mercy
6. pure in heart - shall see God
7. peacemakers - shall be called children of God
8. persecuted for righteousness sake - theirs is the kingdom of heaven
...reviled... (follow-on, not same format as previous eight)
To
not be
negative, most series of
ARMS (Attractive Refrigerator Magnet Sermons) stop at number 6 or 7. The Sermon on the Mount then starts with "
salt of the earth" and ends with the "
house built on sand".
6. Matthew 5:9
KJV: Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Greek: μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται
Latin: beati pacifici quoniam filii Dei vocabuntur
Wessex: Eadige synd þa sibsume. for-þan þe hyo beoð godes bearn genemnde.
Wycliffe: Blessid ben pesible men, for thei schulen be clepid Goddis children.
Luther: Selig sind die Friedfertigen; denn sie werden Gottes Kinder heißen.
7. Agree just to get peace
The "peace sign" of the 1960's was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958 in Great Britain for a Nuclear Disarmament campaign.
The "V" for "Victory" sign became used as the "peace" finger sign.

Difference between "peace of mind" and giving a "piece of mind".
How did the loggers get the two rival forests to co-exist?
They were axed to sign a peace tree-ty, wooden you know.
8. Matthew 5:9 Making and appeasing peaceful peacemakers
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
What is peace? What is a peacemaker?
Is being a peacemaker good or bad?
Is making something good or bad?
Who is it doing the calling?
Is there any
conscientious objection to continuing on the topic of making
peace? Let us
piece together some ideas.
These questions arise from Matthew 5:9 in the Beatitudes, given on a mountain to the disciples with both
altitude and
attitude. Is that right,
dude?
Ambiguous request:
Let me be an instrument of your peace.
9. Matthew 22:14
KJV: For many are called, but few are chosen.
Greek: πολλοι γαρ εισιν κλητοι ολιγοι δε εκλεκτοι
Latin: multi autem sunt vocati pauci vero electi
Spanish: Porque muchos son llamados, pero pocos son escogidos.
10. Called a true yoke-follow
Philippians 4:3 And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life. [kjv]
ναι ερωτω και σε γνησιε συζυγε συλλαμβανου αυταις αιτινες εν τω ευαγγελιω συνηθλησαν μοι μετα και κλημεντος και των λοιπων συνεργων μου ων τα ονοματα εν βιβλω ζωης [gnt]
Some versions treat the Greek words for "
true yokefellow", or "
genuine partner", as a women's name. Today this is the Greek word for "
spouse". One could also take the womens names in verse 2 as Greek words that have some meaning in the context that Paul is writing.
A possible pun here is that of the name "
Clement" as «
κλημέντος» with the ancient Greek word
"κληθέντες" ≈ "called, summoned".
The Latin name "
Clement" has a meaning in Greek as the ancient Greek word
"ἐπιείκεια" ≈ "equity, fairness". Paul will use this Greek word in a few verses.
11. Conscientious objection
This verse is often used as a basis of conscientious objection to war by some groups.
The Mennonites are known, in part, for this. A story from the Civil War in the south in the area of Harrisonburg, VA, is told that conscripted Mennonites would shoot their rifles into the air rather than at a target. They were eventually moved to maintaining the supply train.
Is that what it is really saying? Let us investigate.
12. The olive branch of peace
Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: [kjv]
βαπτισθεις δε ο ιησους ευθυς ανεβη απο του υδατος και ιδου ηνεωχθησαν αυτω οι ουρανοι και ειδεν πνευμα το πνευμα του θεου καταβαινον ωσει περιστεραν ερχομενον επ αυτον [gnt]
The "
spirit" of God came down "
like" a "
pigeon"
onto Jesus. The "
dove" and the "
pigeon" are the
same bird. Most languages have only one name for this bird.
Picasso's Paloma dove made the dove and olive branch as symbols of peace popular in modern times.
The Spanish word "paloma" ≈ "pigeon, dove".
The French word "colombe" ≈ "pigeon, dove".
The Latin word "pipio" ≈ "chirping bird" and is onomatopoeic.
The German word "Taube" ≈ "dove".
13. Matthew 3:16
KJV: And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
Greek: και βαπτισθεις δε ο ιησους ανεβη ευθυς ανεβη απο του υδατος και ιδου ανεωχθησαν ηνεωχθησαν αυτω οι ουρανοι και ειδεν πνευμα το πνευμα του θεου καταβαινον ωσει περιστεραν και ερχομενον επ αυτον
14. Yin and yang of peace
In eastern cultures, the symbol of "
yin and yang" is a symbol of balance between two opposing views, forces, etc., of dualism.
dark and bright

Saying:
I'm a poet and don't even know it.
The ancient Greek word

μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
Eadige … sibsume… genemnde. [wes]
Selig … Friedfertigen… heißen. [lu]
The Old English word
"sibb" ≈ "kinship, peace" and is the source of words such as "
sibling" and "
gossip" (talk related to people who are related).
The German word
"friedfertiger" ≈ "peaceful" is from two German words.
The German word "Friede" ≈ "peace" and is a common German female name and is related to the English word "free".
The German word "fertig" ≈ "ready, prepared" and is related to the Old English word "fierd, fyrd" ≈ "expedition, campaign"
[Faith, Hope, Charity]
The Old English word

20. Latin peace and pacts
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
beati pacifici … vocabuntur [v]
The Latin word
"pacifico" ≈ "peacemaker" and is the source of the English word
"pacify". It comes from two Latin words.
The Latin word "pax" ≈ "peace". The Roman "peace" was a "pax" that was enforced by strict Roman military rule.
The Latin word "facio" ≈ "I do, make".
The Latin word
"paciscere" ≈ "to agree" and is the basis for the Latin word
"pactum" ≈ "something agreed on" and is the basis (through French) for the English word "
pact".
21. Keeping and making peace
One can
pacify to
keep peace or
make peace.
One can "
rest" in
"peace".
A baby pacifier or binkie helps to keep peace by keeping the baby occupied and content.
The Pacific Ocean is named for being "peaceful", but, as with any ocean, this is not true in many places and times.
In the Vietnam War, pacification could mean "winning hearts and minds" or "obliteration of opposition".
Peace can be framed as reconciliation.
22. Pax Romana
1 Peter 3:11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. [kjv]
εκκλινατω δε απο κακου και ποιησατω αγαθον ζητησατω ειρηνην και διωξατω αυτην [gnt]
Peter says we are to
"make" or "
do" "
good" and "
seek"
"peace", not
"make peace". The Greek translated as "
ensue" is that of "
pursue" or "
persecute".
When the word
"peace" is used, one must ask the following question. What exactly is meant by the word
"peace"?
World (humanist) definition of "peace".
Bible definition of "peace".
The Latin word
"pax" ≈ "peace" as in the "
Roman peace" or "
Pax Romana". This was a
"peace" by
force.

26. Clausewitz
Philippians 1:2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. [kjv]
χαρις υμιν και ειρηνη απο θεου πατρος ημων και κυριου ιησου χριστου [gnt]
gratia … pax … [v]
благодать … мир … [rus]
The Russian word
"мир" (mir) ≈ "world, peace" (depending on context) was the name given to the Russian Mir space station. That PIE root "
mir" comes down in English as "
miracle".
Is it a "
miracle" if
"peace" comes to the "
world"?
The Latin word "gratia" ≈ "grace".
The ancient Greek word"χάρις" ≈ "favor, grace".
27. Passing the peace
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. [kjv]
ειρηνην αφιημι υμιν ειρηνην την εμην διδωμι υμιν ου καθως ο κοσμος διδωσιν εγω διδωμι υμιν μη ταρασσεσθω υμων η καρδια μηδε δειλιατω [gnt]
pacem … pacem … mundus … [v]
… Frieden … Frieden … Welt … [lu]
Some churches "
pass the peace" (of Jesus) with some form of greeting each other during the service. The world's peace may not be the best.
Matthew 10:13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. [kjv]
και εαν μεν η η οικια αξια ελθατω η ειρηνη υμων επ αυτην εαν δε μη η αξια η ειρηνη υμων εφ υμας επιστραφητω [gnt]
The word for "
return to you" has to do with, literally, "
turning back onto itself" (in a self-referential way).
28. John 14:27
KJV: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

30. Philippians 1:2 Peace to you
31. Philippians 1:2
KJV: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Greek: χαρις υμιν και ειρηνη απο θεου πατρος ημων και κυριου ιησου χριστου

Slavonic: благодать вам и мир от Бога Отца нашего и Господа Иисуса Христа.
Russian: благодать вам и мир от Бога Отца нашего и Господа Иисуса Христа.
32. Hebrew shalom
The word
"peace" is often used as a greeting from the Hebrew as in
"shalom" as part of, say, the word "
Jerusalem" as "
house" or "
town" of
"peace".
Judges 6:24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah–shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites. [kjv]
… שלום … [he]
και ωκοδομησεν εκει γεδεων θυσιαστηριον τω κυριω και εκαλεσεν αυτο ειρηνη κυριου εως της ημερας ταυτης ετι αυτου οντος εν εφραθα πατρος του εζρι [lxx]
… Domini pax … [v]
33. Judges 6:24
KJV: Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah–shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites.
Hebrew: ויבן שם גדעון מזבח ליהוה ויקרא לו יהוה שלום עד היום הזה עודנו בעפרת אבי העזרי׃
Greek: και ωκοδομησεν εκει γεδεων θυσιαστηριον τω κυριω και εκαλεσεν αυτο ειρηνη κυριου εως της ημερας ταυτης ετι αυτου οντος εν εφραθα πατρος του εζρι
Latin: aedificavit ergo ibi Gedeon altare Domino vocavitque illud Domini pax usque in praesentem diem cum adhuc esset in Ephra quae est familiae Ezri
34. Peace
A precise definition of
peace is important.
The aggressor is always peace-loving (as Bonaparte always claimed to be); he would prefer to take over our country unopposed. Carl von Clausewitz (Prussian military theorist)
35. Appeasement
An often used explanation for the word "
peacemaker" is that of "
reconciliation".
Discuss: Is "
appeasement" the same as "
peace"?
The classic case of "
appeasement in our time" is that of British Prime Minister
Neville Chamberlain flying back from a meeting with
Adolf Hitler in September 1938 and declaring to the world that his appeasement policy had brought "
peace for our time" and that Hitler had assured him "
he had no more territorial demands to make in Europe". Of course, this led directly to World War II within a year.
September 30, 1938: Munich Agreement (peace for our time)
September 1, 1939: Hitler and Stalin attack and divide Poland, start of World War II.
July 7, 1937: Japan invades China.
36. Henry Kissinger
Sometimes there
appear to be
no similarities between viewpoints.
Henry Kissinger (1923-2023) would try to get two parties to agree on something, often to
agree that they
disagreed. This is a self-referential paradox that was used to get the two sides talking.
Idea put into action: "
A peace without victory is a victory for peace".
Congress of Vienna (1814-1815) [1816 Year without a summer]
Treaty of Versailles (June 28, 1919)
37. Peace of Jesus
Jesus refers to peace in various ways, and not in the way the world defines "peace".
How do the following verses fit with the "peace" described above?
38. 1 Thessalonians 5:3 Peace and safety
1 Thessalonians 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. [kjv]
οταν λεγωσιν ειρηνη και ασφαλεια τοτε αιφνιδιος αυτοις επισταται ολεθρος ωσπερ η ωδιν τη εν γαστρι εχουση και ου μη εκφυγωσιν [gnt]
… Friede… keine Gefahr… [lu]
Have you ever noticed that when someone generalizes as something being for the "
good of the people" it is almost never, on close analysis, for the "
good of the people"?
Interestingly, the German word
"Friede" ≈ "peace" is related to the English word "
free" as in "
liberty", in addition to also being used for "
no immediate cost" or "
gratis" (in Latin, as "
grace").
39. Security and privacy
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both. Benjamin Franklin (American scientist, inventor, philosopher, statesman)
As we must account for every idle word, so must we account for every idle silence. Benjamin Franklin (American scientist, inventor, philosopher, statesman)
40. 1 Thessalonians 5:3
KJV: For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
Greek: οταν γαρ λεγωσιν ειρηνη και ασφαλεια τοτε αιφνιδιος αυτοις εφισταται επισταται ολεθρος ωσπερ η ωδιν τη εν γαστρι εχουση και ου μη εκφυγωσιν
Latin: cum enim dixerint pax et securitas tunc repentinus eis superveniet interitus sicut dolor in utero habenti et non effugient
Wycliffe: For whanne thei schulen seie pees is, and sikirnesse, thanne sudeyn deth schal come on hem, as sorewe to a womman that is with child, and thei schulen not scape.
Gothic: than qithand: gawairthi jah tulgitha, thanuh unweniggo ins biqimith fralusts swaswe sair qithuhafton, jah ni unthathliuhand.
Luther: Denn wenn sie werden sagen: Es ist Friede, es hat keine Gefahr! so wird sie das Verderben schnell überfallen, gleich wie der Schmerz ein schwanger Weib, und werden nicht entfliehen.
41. Peace as silence
Matthew 26:63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. [kjv]
ο δε ιησους εσιωπα και ο αρχιερευς ειπεν αυτω εξορκιζω σε κατα του θεου του ζωντος ινα ημιν ειπης ει συ ει ο χριστος ο υιος του θεου [gnt]
… tacebat … adiuro … [v]
Mark 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. [kjv]
και διεγερθεις επετιμησεν τω ανεμω και ειπεν τη θαλασση σιωπα πεφιμωσο και εκοπασεν ο ανεμος και εγενετο γαληνη μεγαλη [gnt]
The KVJ uses
"peace" for
"quiet". The original Greek is the modern Greek word
"σιωπά" (see-o-PA) ≈ "be quiet".
The Greek for the Latin "
adjure" is, literally, "
out of the oath" and is the source, through French, of the English word
"exorcise".
42. Matthew 26:63
KJV: But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Greek: ο δε ιησους εσιωπα και αποκριθεις ο αρχιερευς ειπεν αυτω εξορκιζω σε κατα του θεου του ζωντος ινα ημιν ειπης ει συ ει ο χριστος ο υιος του θεου
Latin: Iesus autem tacebat et princeps sacerdotum ait illi adiuro te per Deum vivum ut dicas nobis si tu es Christus Filius Dei
Wessex: Se haelend swigede. Þa. se ealdor þare sacerda cwaeð. Ic haelsige þe þurh þanne lifiende god þaet þu segge us gyf þu ert crist godes sune.
Wycliffe: But Jhesus was stille. And the prince of prestis seide to hym, Y coniure thee bi lyuynge God, that thou seie to vs, if thou art Crist, the sone of God.
Tyndale: But Iesus helde his peace: And the chefe Preeste answered and sayd to him: I charge the in the name of the lyvinge God that thou tell vs whether thou be Christ the sonne of God.
Luther: Aber Jesus schwieg stille. Und der Hohepriester antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich beschwöre dich bei dem lebendigen Gott, daß du uns sagest, ob du seiest Christus, der Sohn Gottes.
43. A piece of the sword of truth
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. [kjv]
μη νομισητε οτι ηλθον βαλειν ειρηνην επι την γην ουκ ηλθον βαλειν ειρηνην αλλα μαχαιραν [gnt]
… pacem … pacem … gladium [v]
Are people (believers and non-believers) ever offended by the word of God?
Did Jesus come to bring
"peace" or to bring a "
sword"? The Latin word
"gladium" ≈ "sword" and is the source of the English word "
gladiator".
As with any saying, there can be more than one meaning and all meanings could be true (in some sense, figurative, literal, etc.).
44. Luke 2:14 Paraphrase
Luke 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. [kjv]
δοξα εν υψιστοις θεω και επι γης ειρηνη εν ανθρωποις ευδοκιας [gnt]
The Greek for "glory" is that of "opinion" or "expectation".
The Greek for "good will" is that of "good opinion" or "good expectation".
Paraphrase: Expectation/opinion in the highest (from earth) to God and on the earth peace in men of a good expectation.
God has a high opinion and a good expectation that men will be peaceful on earth. To support the
KJV translation, the
second Greek
"in" is to the English
"towards". To support the Greek
"in", translations like the
NIV (New International Version) use the following.
NIV: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.
45. Calling
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
beati pacifici … vocabuntur [v]
Eadige … sibsume… genemnde. [wes]
Selig … Friedfertigen… heißen. [lu]
What does it mean to be
"called" as in "
the children of God"?
The Latin word "voco" ≈ "call, summon, name, designate" and is the source of the English word "vocal" and "vocalize".
Does it make a difference to be
"called" the "
children of God" or to be
"named" the "
children of God" or "
sons of God"?
46. German and Old English
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
beati pacifici … vocabuntur [v]
Eadige … sibsume… genemnde. [wes]
Selig … Friedfertigen… heißen. [lu]
The German word "heißen" ≈ "name, call". One of the first German phrases one learns is "Ich heiße" which means "I am named" or "I am called".
The Old English word "genemnde" ≈ "named, called".
47. Matthew 22:14 Callings
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. [kjv]
πολλοι γαρ εισιν κλητοι ολιγοι δε εκλεκτοι [gnt]
multi autem sunt vocati pauci vero electi [v]
48. Clamor calling
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. [kjv]
πολλοι γαρ εισιν κλητοι ολιγοι δε εκλεκτοι [gnt]
multi autem sunt vocati pauci vero electi [v]
The English word
"clamor" comes, through French, from the Latin word
"clamor" ≈ "shout, cry" which comes from the Latin word
"clamo" ≈ "cry out, complain" which is related to the ancient Greek word
"καλέω" ≈ "call". The "
cl" in Latin changed into the "
ll" in Spanish as in
"llamar" ≈ "summon, call".
English: What is it called?
Spanish: ¿Cómo se llama?
Why do so many people who speak Spanish want others to join them and look at alpacas?
They are always saying, ¿Cómo se llama? (Come see the llama!)
49. Making peace
The root of the Greek word for "
peacemaker" as used here is found three times in the Bible in exactly this form, once above in Matthew 5:9. The other two places are in Proverbs in the
LXX (Septuagint) and by Paul in his letter to the Colossians. It is found in another place as two words instead of one (in James, below).
50. Endings
The exact word used in Matthew 5:9 appears only here. This causes endless disagreements over the exact meaning.
Challenge: Find other places in the Bible where an ending in and of itself can be changed such that it changes the meaning of a sentence, in that context, such that there is a significant theological difference.
51. Fault tolerance
In communication and information theory and practice, the way to avoid such ambiguities is to introduce redundancy in order to achieve a level of fault tolerance.
Redundancy it texts such as the Bible help reduce ambiguity because in order to take a passage a certain way, one needs to be consistent with the rest of the text, especially those parts of the text that cover the same material and/or meaning.
52. Proverbs 10:10
Proverbs 10:10 He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall. [kjv]
ο εννευων οφθαλμοις μετα δολου συναγει ανδρασι λυπας ο δε ελεγχων μετα παρρησιας ειρηνοποιει [lxx]
He that winks with his eyes deceitfully, procures griefs for men; but he that reproves boldly is a peacemaker. [bs3]
The Hebrew often rhymes by semantic content, either the same thought or contrasting thoughts. Someone who "
winks" with the "
eye" may be "
appeasing" what is seen.
The second part of the verse appears to be some form of idiom from the Hebrew, though it does appear to deal with the "
lips".
Does that fit the Greek for
"peacemaker"? The Greek
"peacemaker" appears to correspond with "
prating fool" - a "
babbling fool".
One reasonable translation of the second part of the verse is that he who rebukes boldly, makes
"peace", as in the
LXX, but that does not clearly define
"peace"
53. Proverbs 10:10
KJV: He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.
Hebrew: קרץ עין יתן עצבת ואויל שפתים ילבט׃
Greek: ο εννευων οφθαλμοις μετα δολου συναγει ανδρασι λυπας ο δε ελεγχων μετα παρρησιας ειρηνοποιει
Brenton: He that winks with his eyes deceitfully, procures griefs for men; but he that reproves boldly is a peacemaker.
Latin: qui annuit oculo dabit dolorem stultus labiis verberabitur
Wycliffe: He that bekeneth with the iye, schal yyue sorewe; a fool schal be betun with lippis.
Luther: Wer mit Augen winket, wird Mühe anrichten; und der ein Narrenmaul hat, wird geschlagen.
54. Colossians 1:20
Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. [kjv]
και δι αυτου αποκαταλλαξαι τα παντα εις αυτον ειρηνοποιησας δια του αιματος του σταυρου αυτου δι αυτου ειτε τα επι της γης ειτε τα εν τοις ουρανοις [gnt]
… pacificans … [v]
… made pees … [wy]
Jesus "made" "peace".
Are we to "make" "peace"
Do Paul's references to "
foolish things of the world" and the "
foolishness" of God have any connection with the
"peacemakers" references in the other verses?
55. Colossians 1:20
KJV: And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Greek: και δι αυτου αποκαταλλαξαι τα παντα εις αυτον ειρηνοποιησας δια του αιματος του σταυρου αυτου δι αυτου ειτε τα επι της γης ειτε τα εν τοις ουρανοις
Latin: et per eum reconciliare omnia in ipsum pacificans per sanguinem crucis eius sive quae in terris sive quae in caelis sunt
Wycliffe: and bi hym alle thingis to be recounselid in to hym, and made pees bi the blood of his cros, tho thingis that ben in erthis, ether that ben in heuenes.
56. 1 Corinthians 1:25,27
1 Corinthians 1:25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. [kjv]
οτι το μωρον του θεου σοφωτερον των ανθρωπων εστιν και το ασθενες του θεου ισχυροτερον των ανθρωπων [gnt]
1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; [kjv]
αλλα τα μωρα του κοσμου εξελεξατο ο θεος ινα καταισχυνη τους σοφους και τα ασθενη του κοσμου εξελεξατο ο θεος ινα καταισχυνη τα ισχυρα [gnt]
57. 1 Corinthians 1:25
KJV: Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
Greek: οτι το μωρον του θεου σοφωτερον των ανθρωπων εστιν και το ασθενες του θεου ισχυροτερον των ανθρωπων εστιν
58. 1 Corinthians 1:27
KJV: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
Greek: αλλα τα μωρα του κοσμου εξελεξατο ο θεος ινα καταισχυνη τους σοφους καταισχυνη και τα ασθενη του κοσμου εξελεξατο ο θεος ινα καταισχυνη τα ισχυρα

61. Mark 4:39
KJV: And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Greek: και διεγερθεις επετιμησεν τω ανεμω και ειπεν τη θαλασση σιωπα πεφιμωσο και εκοπασεν ο ανεμος και εγενετο γαληνη μεγαλη
Latin: et exsurgens comminatus est vento et dixit mari tace obmutesce et cessavit ventus et facta est tranquillitas magna
Wessex: & he aras & þam winde be-bead & quoth. to þare sae. Swug & ge-stille. & se wind ge-swac þa. & warð mycel smoltnes.
Tyndale: And he rose vp and rebuked the wynde and sayde vnto the see: peace and be still. And the winde alayed and ther folowed a greate calme.
62. Mark 9:50
Mark 9:50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another. [kjv]
καλον το αλας εαν δε το αλας αναλον γενηται εν τινι αυτο αρτυσετε εχετε εν εαυτοις αλα και ειρηνευετε εν αλληλοις [gnt]
What is "
peace" by the standards of the world?
63. Mark 9:50
KJV: Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
Greek: καλον το αλας εαν δε το αλας αναλον γενηται εν τινι αυτο αρτυσετε εχετε εν εαυτοις αλας αλα και ειρηνευετε εν αλληλοις
Latin: bonum est sal quod si sal insulsum fuerit in quo illud condietis habete in vobis sal et pacem habete inter vos
Wessex: God is salt & gyf þaet salt un-selt byð on þam þe hit selteð. Haebbeð salt on eow & haebbed sibbe be-tweoxe eow.
Luther: Das Salz ist gut; so aber das Salz dumm wird, womit wird man würzen? Habt Salz bei euch und habt Frieden untereinander!
Russian: Соль-добрая вещь; но ежели соль не солона будет, чем вы ее поправите? Имейте в себе соль, и мир имейте между собою.
64. Luke 11:21-22
Luke 11:21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: [kjv]
οταν ο ισχυρος καθωπλισμενος φυλασση την εαυτου αυλην εν ειρηνη εστιν τα υπαρχοντα αυτου [gnt]
11:22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. [kjv]
This description of
"peace" of the world seems somewhat similar to "
survival of the fittest" or "
survival of the luckiest".
Can a comparison be made to the one who is strong enough to "
bind" the "
strong man" of the world?
65. Luke 11:21
KJV: When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
Greek: οταν ο ισχυρος καθωπλισμενος φυλασση την εαυτου αυλην εν ειρηνη εστιν τα υπαρχοντα αυτου
66. Luke 11:22
KJV: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
Greek: επαν δε ο ισχυροτερος αυτου επελθων νικηση αυτον την πανοπλιαν αυτου αιρει εφ η επεποιθει και τα σκυλα αυτου διαδιδωσιν
67. Matthew 12:29-30
Matthew 12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. [kjv]
12:30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. [kjv]
Analogies can be made here to Moses (as a type of Jesus) going into Egypt (the world) to bind the Pharaoh (strong man of the world) to bring his people out of bondage.
68. Matthew 12:29
KJV: Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
Greek: η πως δυναται τις εισελθειν εις την οικιαν του ισχυρου και τα σκευη αυτου διαρπασαι αρπασαι εαν μη πρωτον δηση τον ισχυρον και τοτε την οικιαν αυτου διαρπασει
69. Matthew 12:30
KJV: He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
Greek: ο μη ων μετ εμου κατ εμου εστιν και ο μη συναγων μετ εμου σκορπιζει
70. James 3:16-18 Fruit of righteousness
James 3:16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. [kjv]
οπου γαρ ζηλος και εριθεια εκει ακαταστασια και παν φαυλον πραγμα [gnt]
3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. [kjv]
η δε ανωθεν σοφια πρωτον μεν αγνη εστιν επειτα ειρηνικη επιεικης ευπειθης μεστη ελεους και καρπων αγαθων αδιακριτος ανυποκριτος [gnt]
3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. [kjv]
καρπος δε δικαιοσυνης εν ειρηνη σπειρεται τοις ποιουσιν ειρηνην [gnt]
James uses similar words - two separate words rather than the one word. James does not appear to realize that
"making" "peace" as in a
"peacemaker" is
not said by Jesus in a good way.
The Modern Greek version here changes the two separate words to the one word used in the Beatitudes.
71. James 3:16
KJV: For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
Greek: οπου γαρ ζηλος και εριθεια εκει ακαταστασια και παν φαυλον πραγμα
72. James 3:17
KJV: But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
Greek: η δε ανωθεν σοφια πρωτον μεν αγνη εστιν επειτα ειρηνικη επιεικης ευπειθης μεστη ελεους και καρπων αγαθων αδιακριτος και ανυποκριτος
73. James 3:18
KJV: And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
Greek: καρπος δε της δικαιοσυνης εν ειρηνη σπειρεται τοις ποιουσιν ειρηνην
Latin: fructus autem iustitiae in pace seminatur facientibus pacem
Wycliffe: And the fruyt of riytwisnesse is sowun in pees, to men that maken pees.
Luther: Die Frucht aber der Gerechtigkeit wird gesäet im Frieden denen, die den Frieden halten.
74. 1 Corinthians 14:33 Peace and confusion
The word
"peace" can be hard to define and is left for another time. Perhaps that can
"appease" you for the time being. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 14:33, contrasts
"peace" with
"confusion" as in
"commotions". The Greek is, literally
"not standing down".
1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. [kjv]
ου γαρ εστιν ακαταστασιας ο θεος αλλα ειρηνης ως εν πασαις ταις εκκλησιαις των αγιων [gnt]
… dissensionis … pacis … [v]
The name of the city "Jerusalem", in Hebrew, means "city" of "peace".
The name of the city "Babylon", from the Hebrew, means "confusion" and is the source of the English word "babble".
The meaning of
"not following the established rules" as in
"making one's own rules" could be used for the term
"lawlessness" - which in English can mean
"anarchy" or
"commotion" or
"confusion". However, there is a Greek word for this idea (and is associated with the opposite of
"peace" by Paul) in 1 Corinthians 14:33.
75. Sons of God
76. Children of God
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. [kjv]
οσοι γαρ πνευματι θεου αγονται ουτοι υιοι θεου εισιν [gnt]
Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. [kjv]
παντες γαρ υιοι θεου εστε δια της πιστεως εν χριστω ιησου [gnt]
77. Romans 8:14
KJV: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Greek: οσοι γαρ πνευματι θεου αγονται ουτοι εισιν υιοι θεουεισιν
Latin: quicumque enim Spiritu Dei aguntur hii filii sunt Dei
Wycliffe: For who euere ben led bi the spirit of God, these ben the sones of God.
Luther: Denn welche der Geist Gottes treibet, die sind Gottes Kinder.
78. Galatians 3:26
KJV: For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Greek: παντες γαρ υιοι θεου εστε δια της πιστεως εν χριστω ιησου
Latin: omnes enim filii Dei estis per fidem in Christo Iesu
Luther: Denn ihr seid alle Gottes Kinder durch den Glauben an Christum Jesum.
79. Genesis 6:2 Sons of God
Genesis 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. [kjv]
ιδοντες δε οι υιοι του θεου τας θυγατερας των ανθρωπων οτι καλαι εισιν ελαβον εαυτοις γυναικας απο πασων ων εξελεξαντο [lxx]
There are some interesting references in the Old Testament.
The first reference is in Genesis 6:2 with an explanation of what preceded the Flood of Noah.
The modern Greek word "του" (tu) ≈ "of" which is explicitly present in the LXX and more implicit in the GNT.
The Luther German continues to use "
children of God" is in the
GNT.
80. Genesis 6:2
KJV: That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Hebrew: ויראו בני האלהים את בנות האדם כי טבת הנה ויקחו להם נשים מכל אשר בחרו׃
Greek: ιδοντες δε οι υιοι του θεου τας θυγατερας των ανθρωπων οτι καλαι εισιν ελαβον εαυτοις γυναικας απο πασων ων εξελεξαντο
Latin: videntes filii Dei filias eorum quod essent pulchrae acceperunt uxores sibi ex omnibus quas elegerant
Wycliffe: the sones of God seiyen the douytris of men that thei weren faire, and token wyues to hem of alle whiche thei hadden chose.
Tyndale: the sonnes of God sawe the doughters of men that they were fayre and toke vnto them wyves which they best liked amoge the all.
Luther: da sahen die Kinder Gottes nach den Töchtern der Menschen, wie sie schön waren und nahmen zu Weibern, welche sie wollten.
81. Genesis 6:4 Giants
Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. [kjv]
οι δε γιγαντες ησαν επι της γης εν ταις ημεραις εκειναις και μετ εκεινο ως αν εισεπορευοντο οι υιοι του θεου προς τας θυγατερας των ανθρωπων και εγεννωσαν εαυτοις εκεινοι ησαν οι γιγαντες οι απ αιωνος οι ανθρωποι οι ονομαστοι [lxx]
The Hebrew word
"הנפלים" (ha-ne-pi-lim) ≈ "Nephilim" is translated is "
giants" but these were more than just big and what we would call "
giants" today.
82. Genesis 6:4
KJV: There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Wycliffe: Sotheli giauntis weren on erthe in tho daies, forsothe aftir that the sones of God entriden to the douytris of men, and tho douytris gendriden; these weren myyti of the world and famouse men.
Tyndale: There were tirantes in the world in thos dayes. For after that the children of God had gone in vnto the doughters of men and had begotten them childern the same childern were the mightiest of the world and men of renowne
Luther: Es waren auch zu den Zeiten Tyrannen auf Erden; denn da die Kinder Gottes die Töchter der Menschen beschliefen und ihnen Kinder zeugeten, wurden daraus Gewaltige in der Welt und berühmte Leute.
83. Job 1:6 Sons of God
Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. [kjv]
και ως εγενετο η ημερα αυτη και ιδου ηλθον οι αγγελοι του θεου παραστηναι ενωπιον του κυριου και ο διαβολος ηλθεν μετ αυτων [lxx]
… filhos de Deus … Satan… [por]
The
LXX uses the word "
angels" rather than "
sons". The same is done in several other verses in Job.
84. Job 1:6
KJV: Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
Hebrew: ויהי היום ויבאו בני האלהים להתיצב על יהוה ויבוא גם השטן בתוכם׃
Greek: και ως εγενετο η ημερα αυτη και ιδου ηλθον οι αγγελοι του θεου παραστηναι ενωπιον του κυριου και ο διαβολος ηλθεν μετ αυτων
Portuguese: Um dia em que os filhos de Deus se apresentavam diante do SENHOR, o acusador, Satan, foi também junto com eles.
85. Hosea 1:10-11 Sons of God
Hosea 1:10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God. [kjv]
και ην ο αριθμος των υιων ισραηλ ως η αμμος της θαλασσης η ουκ εκμετρηθησεται ουδε εξαριθμηθησεται και εσται εν τω τοπω ου ερρεθη αυτοις ου λαος μου υμεις εκει κληθησονται υιοι θεου ζωντος [lxx]
1:11 Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel. [kjv]
Hosea 1:10 has an interesting verse in that is uses the exact same words for "
called" or "
named" and the "
sons of God" is in the Beatitude in Matthew 5:9.
86. Hosea 1:10
KJV: Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.
87. Hosea 1:11
KJV: Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.
Hebrew: ונקבצו בני יהודה ובני ישראל יחדו ושמו להם ראש אחד ועלו מן הארץ כי גדול יום יזרעאל׃
Greek: και συναχθησονται οι υιοι ιουδα και οι υιοι ισραηλ επι το αυτο και θησονται εαυτοις αρχην μιαν και αναβησονται εκ της γης οτι μεγαλη η ημερα του ιεζραελ
88. Matthew 5:9 Division and unity
In essentials unity,
In nonessentials liberty,
In all things charity.
Attributed to Augustine of Hippo (354-430), John Wesley (1702-1791), and others.
The
danger, however, is that if a
compromise is made to "
make peace", it may not be in line with God's law, glory, opinion, righteousness, etc.
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
Eadige … sibsume… genemnde. [wes]
Selig … Friedfertigen… heißen. [lu]
Discuss: Provide historical or contemporary examples of two (or more) sides agreeing to something that is
not in line with the laws of God.
89. Matthew Peacemaker review
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
beati pacifici … vocabuntur [v]
The Greek word translated
"blessed" means
"happy" or
"content".
[Pax Romana, anarchy vs. peace]
Jesus does not say whether being a "peacemaker" is a good or bad idea.
Jesus does not say who will call such a "peacemaker" the "children of God".
As such, this Beatitude is an
ambiguous statement that can be taken in multiple ways.
Paraphrase: Those who make peace or appeasement (in this world) are happy/content with themselves as they are named or called (by the world) children of God.
90. Revelation 3:20 Jesus at the door
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. [kjv]
ιδου εστηκα επι την θυραν και κρουω εαν τις ακουση της φωνης μου και ανοιξη την θυραν εισελευσομαι προς αυτον και δειπνησω μετ αυτου και αυτος μετ εμου [gnt]
Some churches only allow the part of Jesus they like into their church. The church at
Laodicia appears to not want Jesus in their church. Jesus is at the church door knocking.
Have some churches today "separated" or "uprooted" themselves from (the love of) Jesus?
Are some churches today "strangers" to Jesus?
Are some churches today "blind" to the true and complete Jesus?
Might those in this church be too busy "
ministering" to
others and not "
examining" or "
thinking" about the entirety of Jesus?
The "
hear" in Greek has a connotation of hearing with understanding. The Greek for "
voice" is, literally, "
light" into the "
mind" and can be a play on words with "
murders".
