Revelation 2:12-17 Pergamus
1. Revelation 2:12-17 Pergamus
2. Pergamus
The Greek for "
Pergamus" means, literally, "
mixed marriage".
3. Traditions from Babel to Pergamus to Rome
Revelation 2:12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; [kjv]
και τω αγγελω της εν περγαμω εκκλησιας γραψον ταδε λεγει ο εχων την ρομφαιαν την διστομον την οξειαν [gnt]
Many customs originated from the Tower of Babel and Babylon which then went to
Pergamus and then to Rome and then to the rest of the world.
Sunset to sunset: Hebrews, Germanic cultures. (Christmas Eve)
Midnight to midnight: Greece, Rome.
|
Spring (renewal, planting, Easter)
Summer (growing)
Fall (harvest, fruit, Halloween)
Winter (Saturnalia, Christmas, Hanukkah)
|
[linguistic connections, papyrus vs. parchment, underground pipes]
Some people went north and west, as ended the Germanic tribes with customs of the winter solstice tree.
The Greek for "
two edged sword" means, literally, "
two mouthed sword" as in "
let my sword do the talking".
4. Mark 7:19 Latrine
Mark 7:19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? [kjv]
οτι ουκ εισπορευεται αυτου εις την καρδιαν αλλ εις την κοιλιαν και εις τον αφεδρωνα εκπορευεται καθαριζων παντα τα βρωματα [gnt]
The passage in Mark forced the meaning of "
latrine" from figurative to include the literal meaning.
Interestingly, the Greek words for "
latrine", as used by Jesus, and "
sewer pipes" as one meaning of the ancient Greek word
"ὑπόνομος" ≈ "underground passage, mine, water-pipe, conduit, sewer, vein of minerals" appear in an inscription found at
Pergaumum, one of the
Seven Churches in Revelation to which Jesus dictated letters to John.
5. Wikipedia: Inscription at Pergaumum
The following is a transcription and translation of the relevant text from Lex de astynomis Pergamenorum ("Law of the town clerks of Pergamon") following the Greek text as published by Klaffenbach (1954). (underlining added)
483.220 ΑΦΕΔΡΩΝΩΝ = Concerning privies. ΟΙ ΑΣΤΥΝΟΜΟΙ = the town clerks ΕΠΙΜΕΛΕΙΑΝ = care (f.acc.) 6. Romans 6:14 Under the law
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. [kjv]
αμαρτια γαρ υμων ου κυριευσει ου γαρ εστε υπο νομον αλλα υπο χαριν [gnt]
Paul, in Romans, Galatians, and other places, often writes about being "
under the law". Which do you prefer?
"not under the law, but under grace"
"not under law but under grace".
One must distinguish the law (opinion, glory) of God and law (opinion, glory) of humans.
7. Revelation 2:12 Pergamus
The city of Pergamus is associated with Babylon as in the spirit (high priests, etc.) of the original Babylon moving to Greek Pergamus and then to Rome. There is a debate about which city of the world today best represents this pagan spirit of the original Babylon.
Many secular powers have their own version of "
double talk" in wielding power as in a "
two mouthed sword".
The English word
"diplomat" comes, through French, from the ancient Greek word
"δίπλωμα" ≈ "double-folded document" and is the source of the English word "
diploma".
8. Revelation 2:12-17 Pergamus
The Greek for "
Pergamus" means, literally, "
mixed marriage".
9. Revelation 2:12 Sword
10. Revelation 2:12
KJV: And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;
Greek: και τω αγγελω της εν περγαμω εκκλησιας γραψον ταδε λεγει ο εχων την ρομφαιαν την διστομον την οξειαν
11. Revelation 2:13
Revelation 2:13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. [kjv]
οιδα που κατοικεις οπου ο θρονος του σατανα και κρατεις το ονομα μου και ουκ ηρνησω την πιστιν μου και εν ταις ημεραις αντιπας ο μαρτυς μου ο πιστος μου ος απεκτανθη παρ υμιν οπου ο σατανας κατοικει [gnt]
The Greek word for "
dwell", used twice, has the Greek word for "
house" in it. Might this be the "
house" in which the "
candle" or "
opinion" is
not put "
under" a "
measure", translated as "
basket", but used to provide (
false) "
light" to all in the "
house"? This appears to be the "
house" of "
Satan".
The Greek word translated "
holdest" is that of "
power" and is the source of the last part of the English word
"democracy" or, literally from the Greek, "
people power".
One can "
deny" the "
faith" in Jesus either by "
thought", "
mouth" or "
action".
The Greek for "
Antipas" means, literally, "
in place of" "
all".
The Greek word translated as "
seat" is that of "
throne". Jesus says one should not "
swear" by the "
throne". Where might be the location of the "
seat" of "
Satan"? This might be related to the play on words with "
measures three" in the fourth kingdom parable.
12. Revelation 2:13 Witness
The Greek word translated as "
martyr" is that of "
witness". That Greek word did become the English word
"martyr".
13. Revelation 2:13
KJV: I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
Greek: οιδα τα εργα σου και που κατοικεις οπου ο θρονος του σατανα και κρατεις το ονομα μου και ουκ ηρνησω την πιστιν μου και εν ταις ημεραις εν αις αντιπας ο μαρτυς μου ο πιστος μου ος απεκτανθη παρ υμιν οπου κατοικει ο σατανας κατοικει
14. Revelation 2:14
Revelation 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. [kjv]
αλλα εχω κατα σου ολιγα οτι εχεις εκει κρατουντας την διδαχην βαλααμ ος εδιδασκεν τω βαλακ βαλειν σκανδαλον ενωπιον των υιων ισραηλ φαγειν ειδωλοθυτα και πορνευσαι [gnt]
The two Greek words for
"against you" are only used in Matthew 5:23 and in Revelation, to the churches at
Ephesus,
Smyrna and
Thyatira.
Balaam is mentioned. Balaam was not guilty of "
fornication" but used the "
reasoning" of "
fornication" to help others "
entrap" the Israelites.
15. Revelation 2:14
KJV: But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
Greek: αλλ αλλα εχω κατα σου ολιγα οτι εχεις εκει κρατουντας την διδαχην βαλααμ ος εδιδασκεν εν τω βαλακ βαλειν σκανδαλον ενωπιον των υιων ισραηλ φαγειν ειδωλοθυτα και πορνευσαι
16. Matthew 5:23 Against thee
Matthew 5:23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; [kjv]
εαν ουν προσφερης το δωρον σου επι το θυσιαστηριον κακει μνησθης οτι ο αδελφος σου εχει τι κατα σου [gnt]
The ancient Greek words
"κατά σου" ≈ "against you" as in being
"down on you".
The ancient Greek prefix
"κατά" ≈ "back, downwards, against, fully, completely".
"σου" ≈ "you".
"κατά" ≈ "against, opposing, into" (genitive)
"κατά" ≈ "downwards, towards, according to" (accusative)
"κᾷτα" ≈ "and then" as a short form of "καὶ εἶτᾰ" ≈ "and then".
Using the last word as a play on words, would be
that the brother Jesus has something (and then some) against you. The two Greek words for
"against you" are only used in Matthew 5:23 and in Revelation, to the churches at
Ephesus,
Smyrna and
Thyatira.
17. Revelation 2:15
Revelation 2:15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. [kjv]
ουτως εχεις και συ κρατουντας την διδαχην νικολαιτων ομοιως [gnt]
The Greek for "
Nicolaitans" means, literally, "
victory of the people". It is also the name "
Nicolas" as in "
Saint" "
Nicolas" as in "
Santa" "
Claus". This word is used in the letter to Ephesus.
The Greek word for "
hate" can be a play on words with the Greek word for "
reward".
18. Revelation 2:15
KJV: So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
Greek: ουτως εχεις και συ κρατουντας την διδαχην των νικολαιτων ο μισω ομοιως
19. Revelation 2:16
Revelation 2:16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. [kjv]
μετανοησον ουν ει δε μη ερχομαι σοι ταχυ και πολεμησω μετ αυτων εν τη ρομφαια του στοματος μου [gnt]
In this verse, it appears that Jesus is reversing this role of sword and mouth as used in verse 12.
20. Revelation 2:16
KJV: Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
Greek: μετανοησον ουν ει δε μη ερχομαι σοι ταχυ και πολεμησω μετ αυτων εν τη ρομφαια του στοματος μου
21. Revelation 2:17
Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. [kjv]
ο εχων ους ακουσατω τι το πνευμα λεγει ταις εκκλησιαις τω νικωντι δωσω αυτω του μαννα του κεκρυμμενου και δωσω αυτω ψηφον λευκην και επι την ψηφον ονομα καινον γεγραμμενον ο ουδεις οιδεν ει μη ο λαμβανων [gnt]
What might be the "
new" "
name"? By "
new" it should be a "
name" not previously used.
[voting by writing a name on a stone]
22. Revelation 2:17
KJV: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Greek: ο εχων ους ακουσατω τι το πνευμα λεγει ταις εκκλησιαις τω νικωντι δωσω αυτω φαγειν απο του μαννα του κεκρυμμενου και δωσω αυτω ψηφον λευκην και επι την ψηφον ονομα καινον γεγραμμενον ο ουδεις εγνω οιδεν ει μη ο λαμβανων
