The mandate of Maundy Thursday
1. The mandate of Maundy Thursday
2. Matthew 28:19
KJV: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Greek: πορευθεντες ουν μαθητευσατε παντα τα εθνη βαπτιζοντες αυτους εις το ονομα του πατρος και του υιου και του αγιου πνευματος
Latin: euntes ergo docete omnes gentes baptizantes eos in nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti
Wycliffe: Therfor go ye, and teche alle folkis, baptisynge hem in the name of the Fadir, and of the Sone, and of the Hooli Goost;
3. Matthew 28:20
KJV: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Latin: docentes eos servare omnia quaecumque mandavi vobis et ecce ego vobiscum sum omnibus diebus usque ad consummationem saeculi
Wycliffe: techynge hem to kepe alle thingis, what euer thingis Y haue comaundid to you; and lo! Y am with you in alle daies, in to the ende of the world.
Tyndale: Teachinge them to observe all thynges what soever I comcommaunded you. And lo I am with you all waye even vntyll the ende of the worlde.
4. The mandate of Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday is 3 days before Easter and is the traditional day of the Last Supper. The name comes from the Latin word
"mandare" ≈ "commit to one's charge, order, command" which is the source of the English word "
mandate" and comes from two Latin words.
It is sometimes called "
Love feast" and sometimes celebrated twice a year.
Whenever thinking of Maundy Thursday, one should think of the "
mandate" that Jesus gave at the Last Supper.
5. The Last Supper: the guest-chamber
Mark 14:14 And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? [kjv]
Here is an icon (image) of the Greek Orthodox Church that I have in my office, to remind me of Jesus at the Last Supper.
The Last Supper is taken in the prepared
"guestchamber" - an
"upper room". The same Greek word is translated as "
Inn" in the Christmas story.
The New Testament or Covenant is given by which the Eucharist of the bread and wine is taken in remembrance.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the town of Ruth and Boaz. Bethlehem's main industry was raising passover lambs for the temple in Jerusalem. Jesus would become our passover lamb
6. Remez: Communion
At the Last Supper, Jesus introduces the sacrament of the bread and the wine called the Eucharist.
This sacrament appears in "
remez" or "
hint" from in Genesis in terms of the dream interpretation of Joseph of the dreams of the baker and the wine steward.
In three days, the break will be broken and the wine will be poured.
7. Mandate
8. Bars
Love God: Does "exceeding the righteousness of the religious establishment" set a high bar or a low bar?
Love neighbor: Does "out-loving the world" set a high bar or a low bar?
According to the Bible and Jesus, one needs to satisfy both. One is not enough.
9. Transitive relationship
John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love :one another. [kjv]
mandatum novum … [v]
… newe maundement… [wy]
Jesus gives a "
new commandment". It is, rather, a new twist on two old commandments from the
OT (Old Testament).
Love your God with everything.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
Love fellow believers unconditionally.
The "
one another" is for those who are "
similar" and not "
different".
Jesus did not come to "
change everything" nor to replace the law but to fulfill the law. The new twist is to follow the example of Jesus in loving your neighbor as yourself.
10. John 13:34
KJV: A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love :one another.
Wycliffe: Y yyue to you a newe maundement, that ye loue togidir, as Y louede you, `and that ye loue togidir.
Tyndale: A newe commaundment geve I vnto you that ye love to gedder as I have loved you that even so ye love one another

14. Wycliffe and Tyndale
Wycliffe uses the Middle English word
"maundement" ≈ "commandment" and from which can be seen the English origin of the word "
Maundy" from the Latin word
"mandatum" ≈ "commandment".
mandatum novum … [v]
… newe maundement… [wy]
Tyndale uses the Middle English word
"commaundment" ≈ "commandment" which still has some of the "
Maundy" spelling.
A newe commaundment geve I vnto you that ye love to gedder as I have loved you that even so ye love one another [ty]
15. Foot washing analogy
John 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. [kjv]
An
analogy takes the form
A is to
B as
C is to
D.
There is a direct connection from
A and
B and from
C to
D. Appropriate indirect connection must be made from
A to
C and from
B to
D.
From this context, the Maundy in Maundy Thursday is often taken as "
foot washing" which is a specific instance of the more general principle that Jesus is trying to convey (in the verse above and below).
16. Structure comparison
17. John 13:14
KJV: If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
Wycliffe: Therfor if Y, lord and maistir, haue waischun youre feet, and ye schulen waische oon anothers feet;
18. John 13:15 Example
John 13:15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. [kjv]
An
example is a "
pattern" as in an "
analogy". Jesus has provided an "
example" that we are to follow, by analogy, not in a completely literal sense.
As "Jesus" did to the "disciples", so "you" are to do to "others" (who are "similar").
Jesus even says it is an "
example" but it is not uncommon in teaching to have students use the example as the one and only way to do something without seeing the more general pattern.
Discussion question: What are some examples of people not seeing the general pattern but focusing on a specific instance?
19. John 13:15
KJV: For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
Wessex: ic eow sealde bisne þaet ge don swa ic eow dyde.
Wycliffe: for Y haue youun`ensaumple to you, `that as I haue do to you, so do ye.
Tyndale: For I have geven you an ensample that ye shuld do as I have done to you.
20. Reflexive relationships
A reflexive relationship applies some property or relation to itself.
Suffer for Christ - inflict pain on oneself.
Don't hide your light under a bushel basket. Form an exclusive monastery.
Might this be taking an example too far?
21. Kicking
If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month. Teddy Roosevelt (26th President of the United States)
22. Commandments
A few verses later is the commandment to love one another (above).
Discussion question: Why might John have included this story that does not appear in the other Gospels?

23. Matthew 28:19-20 The Great Mandate
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [kjv]
28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. [kjv]
Matthew ends with "
The Great Commission" and uses the Latin word
"mandani" ≈ "commanded" as in "
mandate". The Greek translated as "
nations" is that of "
people".
Jesus does not call you to be a "leader" in the human organization sense - where part of "leadership" is to "follow the leader" and to "influence" others through dubious "manipulation".
Jesus does not call you to be a "friend" first where one tries to use "friendship" to "influence" others.
As you go through life, you should "
teach" others what Jesus wants you to teach them.
Star Trek:
.. to go where no man has gone before .... Jesus does
not want you to do what is said in Star Trek. Jesus wants you
... to go where men have gone before - and give them the Good News ....
24. Matthew 28:19 Trinity
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [kjv]
euntes … docete … gentes … [v]
This is one place where all three parts of the "
Trinity" are explicitly mentioned.
