New Living Translation

1. New Living Translation
Logo: New Living TranslationThe NLT (New Living Translation) Bible (1968), as a revision of TLB (The Living Bible), tends to pick one interpretation and translate to that particular interpretation (English). Thus, "The Truth Made Clear" may be just one of the possible truths at each translation point. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Living_Translation (as of 2021-12-01)

Some pastors searching for translations that fit their own bias will use the NLT. In some cases they will make the comment that they think it "matches the Greek better" when they may or may not have and suitable understanding of the underlying Greek language.

Some translation issues in the NLT are discussed here.

2. Translation issues
Many translations of these verses make assumptions on "right" and "wrong" that create logical continuity issues with what Jesus said. Here is the NLT.

If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. Matthew 18:15

But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. Matthew 18:16

If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won't accept the church's decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector. Matthew 18:17

3. New Living Translation
Verse routeMatthew 16:3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? [kjv]

Here is the NLT.

Red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times!
Note the following that lose any secondary (or more) meanings of the text.

4. English translations
Here are some English translations of Romans 8:39. Some generalize Paul's qualified statement (in Greek) to an absolute statement (in English) allowing the claim that "Nothing can separate us from the love of God".

Absolute statements: Qualified statements:

5. James 1:8 Parts of speech

NIV: Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
NLT: Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

How might one justify changing the Bible from "man" (what it clearly says) to "person" or inclusive "they"?
