The ancient Greek word "ἄνθρωπος" ≈ "person, humanity, man" and is the source of the English word "anthropology".

The context determines if it refers to a "man" or to a generic "person" who could be "male" or "female".

James uses the ancient Greek word "ἀνήρ" ≈ "man, husband" four times.

What if a woman comes into the assembly wearing a gold ring? Is James assuming that only men are allowed in the synagogue (a Greek word).

NLT: For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes.

CEV (Contemporary English Version): Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes.

The KJV (King James Version) translates as "offend" which, from the Latin, meant "attack"'. The ancient Greek word used here is "πταίω" ≈ "to stumble" which can be physical or figurative.

Does everyone "stumble" in many ways? A "man" (male, not generic) might not "stumble" in "reasoning" as in the "word"?

The Greek for "perfect" is that of being "complete". What does the physical phenomena of "bridle the body" have to do with the verbal phenomena of "stumble in the reasoning"?

The modern Greek word "πταίω" (PTEH-o) ≈ "to blame". The modern Greek saying "τις πταίει" (tees PTEH-ee) ≈ "who's to blame".
