2. 1 Timothy

3. 1 Timothy 5:1-25 Style and content issues

4. 1 Timothy 5:1
Verse route1 Timothy 5:1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; [kjv]

Does this mean that one can rebuke someone who is not an elder? The wording is somewhat ambiguous.

Paul continues to cover all bases.

17. 1 Timothy 5:8

KJV: But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

18. 1 Timothy 5:9
Verse route1 Timothy 5:9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, [kjv]

These are getting to be very precise rules. Did not the Jewish religious institutions create rules, and rules about rules, etc., such as these?

How well did central top-down planning work for the Soviet Socialist Republic?

How will does central top-down planning work for religious institutions?

Is such central top-down planning in line with what Jesus said? Provide examples.

19. 1 Timothy 5:9
 All
KJV: Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,

20. 1 Timothy 5:10
Verse route1 Timothy 5:10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. [kjv]

21. 1 Timothy 5:10
 All
KJV: Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

KJV: But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;

24. 1 Timothy 5:12
Verse route1 Timothy 5:12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. [kjv]

Is Paul in the business of handing out "damnation" to those that do not follow the rules that he has decided to mete out? What measuring rule might he be using?

25. 1 Timothy 5:12
 All
KJV: Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

26. 1 Timothy 5:13
Verse route1 Timothy 5:13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. [kjv]

These are some of the same words used by Paul in 2 Timothy. However, there Paul intricately weaves together many themes.

A prequel can use some of the same words to appear to be from Paul, but without the intricate weaving of ideas, one wonders about the style differences.

27. 1 Timothy 5:13
 All
KJV: And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

28. 1 Timothy 5:14
Verse route1 Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. [kjv]

Paul has no problem here meting out specific rules for the women.

29. 1 Timothy 5:14
 All
KJV: I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

30. 1 Timothy 5:15
Verse route1 Timothy 5:15 For some are already turned aside after Satan. [kjv]

Here Paul throws out the "Satan" word again. Is this similar to what today is called "playing the race card"?

31. 1 Timothy 5:15
 All
KJV: For some are already turned aside after Satan.

32. 1 Timothy 5:16
Verse route1 Timothy 5:16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed. [kjv]

33. 1 Timothy 5:16
 All
KJV: If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

34. 1 Timothy 5:17
Verse route1 Timothy 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. [kjv]

Here Paul is meting out "double honor" for certain "elders".

35. 1 Timothy 5:17
 All
KJV: Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

36. 1 Timothy 5:18
Verse route1 Timothy 5:18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. [kjv]

Does what is in the scripture give Paul the authority to mete out both penalties and rewards?

37. 1 Timothy 5:18
 All
KJV: For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

38. 1 Timothy 5:19
Verse route1 Timothy 5:19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. [kjv]

How many witnesses are required for those who are not elders?

The Catholic Church later would have levels of witnesses needed to accuse a church authority. The higher the authority, the more witnesses were needed.

In Matthew 18, Jesus does not limit who can meet with another to ascertain "every spoken word" and all the "facts".

39. 1 Timothy 5:19
 All
KJV: Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

40. 1 Timothy 5:20
Verse route1 Timothy 5:20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. [kjv]

What Paul says here goes directly against what Jesus says in Matthew 18. There, once the facts are obtained, the facts are reported to all. Everyone then makes their own decision on what to do.

If what Paul says here is done, everyone should fear, not God, but church authority, to include the "bishop", the "deacons", and the "elders".

41. 1 Timothy 5:20
 All
KJV: Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

42. 1 Timothy 5:21
Verse route1 Timothy 5:21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. [kjv]

This sounds like Paul is asking Timothy to take an "oath". Jesus says specifically not to do this in the Sermon on the Mount. Why might Paul be asking Timothy to do this?

43. 1 Timothy 5:21
 All
KJV: I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

44. 1 Timothy 5:22
Verse route1 Timothy 5:22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. [kjv]

45. 1 Timothy 5:22
 All
KJV: Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.

46. 1 Timothy 5:23
Verse route1 Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. [kjv]

47. 1 Timothy 5:23
 All
KJV: Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

48. 1 Timothy 5:24
Verse route1 Timothy 5:24 Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. [kjv]

49. 1 Timothy 5:24
 All
KJV: Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.

50. 1 Timothy 5:25
Verse route1 Timothy 5:25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise can not be hid. [kjv]

51. 1 Timothy 5:25
 All
KJV: Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise can not be hid.
