The Greek word translated as "masters" by the KJV (King James Version) is that of being a "teacher".

Paul mentions a "school" in Acts where such leisurely discussions happened.

Such teachers were sometimes called "sophists".

To use "sophistic" logic was to use faulty logic to convince people of things for which they would pay the person. This is, at times, like modern consultants or even research scientists - paid to find what the person wants them to find.

Leisurely time away from work was later considered as a vacation where one "vacates" from work. Can one really pray "without ceasing"? The obvious question is how one can ever stop if one is not to cease. Can you drive your car without stopping?. Can you sleep without waking?

The phrase "praying without ceasing" is, in the Greek, "pray without a break" where the units for period of time is not specified.

A better meaning might be to pray without taking an "intermission", as from the Latin Vulgate, or to pray without taking a "vacation", the meaning of a synonym for that ancient Greek word in modern Greek today.

A related word, with the same root, is «σχολαζοντα» which appears to be translated in various ways.

Many LXX verses have translation of "idle" or "idleness". A number of these involve the Hebrews and taking a rest from brick laying in Egypt.

Exodus 5:8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God. [kjv]

The translation is "empty" as in "unoccupied" but "idle" appears to fit well. As a double meaning, "idle" may fit better than "empty".

The word for "empty" or "idle" in Luke does not appear to be translated (appears only in the TR (Textus Receptus)).

The translation is "still", not something like "be idle and know that I am God".

A "still" night is quiet and serene (peaceful).

A related word for school, as in teaching and learning, is the modern Greek word "παιδαγωγία" (peh-tha-go-Y-a) ≈ "pedagogy" from which we get the English word "pedagogy".

In the GNT, Paul uses the word in the sense of a teacher or instructor.

The "schoolmaster" in a one room school was responsible for all the children in that school.

The Greek word for doctrine used here (and elsewhere) is "διδάσκαλιας" (thee-thaa-ska-las) and means what in English is "teaching".

The Greek words comes into English as the word "didactic" meaning a teaching or way of teaching.

The Greek word "didactic" was originally part of what became known as a "Socratic dialog".

The Greek word comes through Latin as "doctrinam" from which many English translations later used "doctrine".

The Luther German is "Lehre". In German, "lehren" means "to teach" and is the origin, English being a Germanic language, of the colloquial phrase, "The teacher did not learn me much.".

The knowledge referred to is "the knowledge" (i.e., the Hebrew has a definite article here). The knowledge of the end times as prophesied in the Bible will be increased.

The "knowledge shall be increased" is, in the LXX, "knowledge shall be multiplied". That has been happening at an ever increasing rate since the start of the "information age".

Knowledge will increase, but not wisdom.

Today we know a lot more but we may not be more smart as a result of having more information.
