Wholesome and healthy sanctified saints
1. Wholesome and healthy sanctified saints
The original word for
"saint" meant someone who was
"holy". The Catholic church elevated "
saint" to "
Saint".
Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, [kjv]
και τα μνημεια ανεωχθησαν και πολλα σωματα των κεκοιμημενων αγιων ηγερθησαν [gnt]
… sanctorum … [v]
… weihaize … [got]
… Heiligen… [lu]
The English word
"holy" came from "
wholesome" as "
healthy" since one should be physically healthy or whole and spiritually healthy or holy.
Song: Good King Wenceslas - Saint Stephen's Day
March 17: Saint Patrick's Day
2. November 1: All Saint's Day
3. Modern Greek
4. October 31: Halloween
The English word
"Halloween" comes from the Scottish word "
Allhallowmas" as an earlier name of "
All Saint's Day" and "
even" being "
eve" is in the "
evening before".
Christmas Eve is the evening before Christmas day.
New Year's Eve is the evening before New Years day.
The English word
"hallow" comes from the Middle English word
"halwe" ≈ "saint, holy thing" which comes from the Old English word
"halga" ≈ "holy one, saint". It is related to the German word
"Heilige" ≈ "saint".
It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain; that such festivals may have had pagan roots; and that Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early Church. (Wikipedia)
A witch appears in the Bible in the story of the witch of Endor.
5. Equivocation
Sometimes pastors will use an
equivocation by blurring the distinction between "
saint" and "
Saint", calling almost anyone in the congregation a "
saint" with the unmade distinction that many in the congregation will be thinking "
Saint" and not "
saint".
Aristotle introduced the idea of an "
equivocation" as a way to use invalid logic to prove a point. Paul appears to allude to this in Philippians 2.
A "Saint" is a "saint" does not (necessarily) mean that a "saint" is a "Saint".
Note: A "
Saint" is a recognition/opinion by the organization bestowing the title.
6. Sinners and saints
It has happened that a family named Sinner and another family named Saint lived on the same street next to each other. Thus, one street had both Sinners and Saints.
Pastors will sometimes use an "
equivocation" to blur the distinction between "
saint" as "
holy believer" and "
Saint" as someone canonized by, say, the Catholic Church.
7. Under the earth
What is "
under the earth"?
Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, [kjv]
και τα μνημεια ανεωχθησαν και πολλα σωματα των κεκοιμημενων αγιων ηγερθησαν [gnt]
… sanctorum … [v]
… weihaize … [got]
… Heiligen… [lu]
Note that these "
saints" would have been from the time of the
OT (Old Testament).
The Gothic "
weihaize" as "
holy" (ones) is the source of the first part of the German word
"Weihnachten" ≈ "Christmas" as, literally "
Holy" and "
night".
8. Matthew 27:52
KJV: And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Greek: και τα μνημεια ανεωχθησαν και πολλα σωματα των κεκοιμημενων αγιων ηγερθη ηγερθησαν
Latin: et monumenta aperta sunt et multa corpora sanctorum qui dormierant surrexerunt
Wessex: & byrigenne wurden ge-openede. & manega halga lichamen þe aer slepen arisan.
Wycliffe: and many bodies of seyntis that hadden slepte, rysen vp.
Tyndale: and graves dyd open: and the bodies of many sainctes which slept arose
Gothic: jah hlaiwasnos usluknodedun, jah managa leika thize ligandane weihaize urrisun.
Luther: Und die Erde erbebete, und die Felsen zerrissen, und die Gräber taten sich auf, und stunden auf viel Leiber der Heiligen, die da schliefen,
Spanish: Y los sepulcros fueron abiertos, y muchos cuerpos de los santos que habían dormido, se levantaron;

11. Ephesians 4:9 Descended to the dead
Ephesians 4:9 Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? [kjv]
το δε ανεβη τι εστιν ει μη οτι και κατεβη εις τα κατωτερα μερη της γης [gnt]
UM Apostle's Creed: I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; ... and was buried;
he descended to the dead. On the third day ... to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, ... the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
Note that the "
he descended to the dead" is often omitted in UM church services when repeating the Apostle's Creed. Why might that be?
12. Ephesians 4:9
KJV: Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
Greek: το δε ανεβη τι εστιν ει μη οτι και κατεβη πρωτον εις τα κατωτερα μερη της γης
13. 1 Peter 4:6
1 Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. [kjv]
εις τουτο γαρ και νεκροις ευηγγελισθη ινα κριθωσιν μεν κατα ανθρωπους σαρκι ζωσιν δε κατα θεον πνευματι [gnt]
14. 1 Peter 4:6
KJV: For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
Greek: εις τουτο γαρ και νεκροις ευηγγελισθη ινα κριθωσιν μεν κατα ανθρωπους σαρκι ζωσιν δε κατα θεον πνευματι
15. Jeremiah 31:37 Core of the earth
Jeremiah 31:37 Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD. [kjv]
We still do not know exactly what is at the center of the earth.
The secular view is that the core is molten, but this creates many scientific theory and observational issues that are not talked about.
So we have not searched out the depths of the earth. Nor have we measured the heaven above, as the Hubble space telescope has demonstrated.

Details are left as a future topic.

16. Jeremiah 31:37
KJV: Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.
Hebrew: כה אמר יהוה אם ימדו שמים מלמעלה ויחקרו מוסדי ארץ למטה גם אני אמאס בכל זרע ישראל על כל אשר עשו נאם יהוה׃
Greek: εαν παυσωνται οι νομοι ουτοι απο προσωπου μου φησιν κυριος και το γενος ισραηλ παυσεται γενεσθαι εθνος κατα προσωπον μου πασας τας ημερας
17. The quick and the dead
The Apostle's Creed contains the phrase "
to judge the living and the dead" which comes from 1 Peter 4:5 and 2 Timothy 4:1 and Acts 10:42.
1 Peter 4:5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead. [kjv]
οι αποδωσουσιν λογον τω ετοιμως κρινοντι ζωντας και νεκρους [gnt]
The quick are those that are living. So, the phrase the "
quick and the dead" refers to the "
living and the dead".
18. 1 Peter 4:5
KJV: Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
Greek: οι αποδωσουσιν λογον τω ετοιμως εχοντι κριναι κρινοντι ζωντας και νεκρους
Latin: qui reddent rationem ei qui paratus est iudicare vivos et mortuos
Wycliffe: And thei schulen yyue resoun to hym, that is redi to deme the quyke and the deed.
19. Judging the quick and the dead
2 Timothy 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; [kjv]
διαμαρτυρομαι ενωπιον του θεου και χριστου ιησου του μελλοντος κρινειν ζωντας και νεκρους και την επιφανειαν αυτου και την βασιλειαν αυτου [gnt]
Paul tells Timothy about the "
quick and the dead" being "
judged" at the "
appearing" of his kingdom.
The Greek word for "
judge" is that of dividing into groups. In Matthew 7, with the "
judge not" verses, the division appears to be between the gates - who is going to heaven (narrow gate) and who is going to hell (wide gate).
20. Living
The Middle English word
"quick" ≈ "living".
The ancient Greek word
"ζάω" ≈ "live" from which we get English words such as "
zoology", "
zoo", etc. The modern Greek word is
"ζώντας" (ZON-tas) ≈ "living".
21. Quicksilver
The English word "
quicksilver" can refer to chemical element number 80 known as Mercury which has the appearance of silver but is very fluid at room temperatures.
At one time, mercury or quicksilver was called "
hydrargrum", from which the chemical abbreviation "
Hg" derives.
Hydrargrum as mercury is from the Latin word
