Hot! Do not touch!After the resurrection in John 20:1-18, Mary Magdalene mistakes Jesus for the gardener. There are various ways to interpret these verses.

Mary runs and tells the others. The ancient Greek word "τρέχω""run" from the PIE (Proto Indo-European) root "*DREG""run" and is related to the English word "trek".

9. Disciple that Jesus loved
Some pastors have used the reference to John (by John) as the "disciple that Jesus loved" with innuendo to leave open the possibility of a same sex relationship between Jesus and John without directly addressing or answering this veiled suggestion. One can make the case that the differences in the meaning of these two words is not as distinct as some would make it out to be.

There is no discussion mentioned about what the disciples said, just what they saw. Thus, they were not "running at the mouth" but they had, indeed, "run".

Some pastors have suggested in sermons that because Peter and John returned to their homes that they did not care about further investigation.

A pastor can then make a big point about Mary staying and investigating, elevating Mary to a much higher level of understanding and stature than Peter and John.

In the Greek, the "homes" is inferred from a pronoun. They had verified what they had heard. They could return to where they had been and/or tell others the news.

For whatever reason, Mary, caught up with grief, stays.

From the gospel accounts, it is known that they had spices and wanted to use those on the body. In this case, the body is nowhere to be found.

Not to go off on a "tangent", but the English word "tangent" comes from the Latin word "tangens""touching" as in a "touching line".

In the Jewish culture of that time, Jesus even speaking to a woman, such as in John 4 at the well, would be considered out of place.

Touching one another would be considered out of place as well.

Now, Mary goes and, tongue-in-cheek, runs at the mouth and tells the disciples what she has seen and what he had said.

Some pastors have interpreted this "touch" as "hold on" and, as in the innuendos about John being the disciple that Jesus loved, suggest but leave open the possibility of a deeper relationship between Mary and Jesus.

One idea for "touch" as "holding on" has to do with the abstract idea of an "idea". That is, Jesus could be saying not to "hold on" to the idea that I am here for he needs to go to the Father.
