Cartoon selections

1. Cartoon selections
Here are some cartoon selections. Most do not appear except on slides.

2. P asters and the flock
The word "pastor" means, literally, a "shepherd".

Being a pastor of the flock of sheep has been described as trying to lead a "herd of cats".

How can a pastor get a "herd of cats" into a meaningful Bible study?

3. Cat Bible study
A "perfect" solution to the cat Bible study, meaningful to the cats if not the pastor.

The group is growing.

Was it a cat I saw? (palindrome)

Information sign More: Running back again with the palindromes
Information sign More: 2 Timothy 2:15 An urgent focused priority to do diligent study

4. Amazon Alexa
Verse routeMatthew 13:51 Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. [kjv]
Verse route συνηκατε ταυτα παντα λεγουσιν αυτω ναι [gnt]

Logo: Amazon Amazon alexa Amazon echo with alexa
Amazon Echo is a listening and speaking device, with the Alexa (female) voice, that listens to commands and then does Internet searches, purchases, etc., and responds as if talking to a real person.
Some people worry about security and privacy since Alexa is always listening to what is said.

Why did Amazon use Alexa as a female personality?

Information sign More: Gnashing of the teeth

5. Listening
Verse routeMatthew 13:51 Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. [kjv]
Verse route συνηκατε ταυτα παντα λεγουσιν αυτω ναι [gnt]

Man to wife: No, you're wrong... It doesn't even go in one ear! Mother to (three) sons: You can all hear just fine, but you don't listen.

[German voice for GPS (Global Positioning System) map directions]

Information sign More: Gnashing of the teeth

6. Grumpy flakes

Have you had your "grumpy flakes" this morning?

Will this be a one-night stay or the usual extended stay? (in the dog house)

Information sign More: A colonoscopy of an annoying and disturbing difficulty

7. Inns and dogs
There was "no room in the inn" or "no room in the guest room".

Like Hilbert's infinite hotel paradox (which never runs out of rooms), there is always room in the "dog house".

Information sign More: Attractive refrigerator magnet sermons

8. Snoopy and Woodstock

Text: from Peanuts cartoon of March 23, 1990, by Charles Schultz. Snoopy is talking to Woodstock, who says nothing.
  • SNOOPY: And sometimes when a rabbit is frightened, it will sit very still like this so no one will see it...
  • SNOOPY: Of course you can still see me! I was just giving an example!!
  • SNOOPY: You can't explain anything to a bird!

Many people have trouble with abstraction - looking at similarities and ignoring differences. If they think not, try having them write a small computer program that requires abstraction. Many professional programmers have problems making appropriate abstractions.

Information sign More: Abstraction

9. Bait and switch: Lucy and the football
In the cartoon "Charlie Brown", Lucy often holds the football so Charlie Brown can kick it, but, when he tries, at the last moment, she pulls it away. This is a "bait and switch" offer.
A Biblical example of "bait and switch" is Jacob where he thinks he is working seven years to get Rachel as a bride but, instead, Leah is substituted and he has to work another seven years for Rachel. Genesis 29:15-28.

Another example is Jesus as Son of the Father and Barabbas which means, literally, "son of the father".

Information sign More: The Father and Abba
Information sign More: Matthew: Forgive the modern psychology bait and switch

10. Dilbert and ignorance
Book: When did ignorance become a point of viewScott Adams, creator of the cartoon series (and books) Dilbert (and related characters), uses ignorance as one (among many) themes in his humor. One book (of cartoons) is entitled "When did ignorance become a point of view?".
A related fallacy is the "appeal to ignorance " fallacy.

11. Inside and outside the box
Sometimes one is trying to see inside the box but one is inside the box and needs the see or think outside the box.

A Far Side cartoon has a man trying to get a frog in the night in the swamp. He says, "See, Frank? Keep the light in their eyes and you can bag them without any trouble at all". Franks is looking up in the sky at a light from above.

Do you see the (conceptual) box of self-reference?

Information sign More: Psalms 2: Self-reference of robots and humans rebelling

12. Reflexive laughing
Laugh at yourself

An example of a reflexive rule is the following. Have you heard that being able to laugh at yourself may help lengthen your life?

Here, the "laugh at" relation is applied reflexively to itself. That is, relating "laugh at" from "you" to "you".

13. Not reflexive laughing
Laugh at spouse

Have you heard that laughing at your spouse may help shorten your life?

Here, the "laugh at" relation is not applied reflexively.

Information sign More: Reflexive property
