Overly burdened in the cares and concerns of evil
1. Overly burdened in the cares and concerns of evil
What is the meaning of "
evil"? Has it changed over time? The word in the
GNT (Greek New Testament) translated as "
evil" in the
KJV (King James Version) had a meaning of "
burdened" or "
constrained" or "
afflicted" in a "
bad" way. This word gradually generalized to the meaning of today.
One Greek word for "
evil" in the
GNT is the ancient Greek word
"πονηρός" ≈ "oppressed by toils" and comes from the ancient Greek word
"πονέω" ≈ "to toil, labor". In the
GNT this word for "
evil" is often paired with the word for "
good". This brings into question the exact meaning of "
good".
2. Burdensome evils
3. Oppression
One can be oppressed by others. One can oppress oneself.
Discuss:
Does the modern idea of slaving away to earn the money needed to get things we want (or covet) oppress us in toils?
How might an attitude closer to what Jesus portrays help minimize that enslavement?
Would the world that is using you to take advantage of that coveting not appreciate you not being beholden to that behavior?
Discuss: Do you own the land you bought? Do you rent that land? (e.g., via property taxes, etc.) What about
eminent domain?
4. Google
Google started their early business life with the motto "
Don't be evil". That has been questioned over the years as to what exactly do they mean by "
evil". Their stated goal at the time included the following.
Don't let advertisers buy their way to the top of search results, don't charge people to find information, don't spam people with banner ads on the homepage.
There may be other thins considered "
evil" by some that are not considered so by Google.
To be clear, Google was the one to first bring up the "
evil" word, not others.
5. Alphabet
When Google restructured under the name "
Alphabet" this was modified from not doing a negative to doing a positive as in "
Do the right thing". A similar question remains. What exactly do they mean by the "
right thing"?
6. Other words for evil
There are other Greek words that are translated is "
evil" in the
KJV.
7. 1 Timothy 6:10 Root of evil
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. [kjv]
ριζα γαρ παντων των κακων εστιν η φιλαργυρια ης τινες ορεγομενοι απεπλανηθησαν απο της πιστεως και εαυτους περιεπειραν οδυναις πολλαις [gnt]
In 1 Timothy 6:10, Paul tells Timothy,
Bishop of Ephesus, that the
"love of money", literally
"love of silver", is the root of all
"evil".
The word used for
"evil" is that of
"bad" in general and of the
"sick" in particular when Jesus is speaking in Matthew. This is not the same "
evil" as in being burdened down with the cares and concerns of this world.
8. 1 Timothy 6:10
KJV: For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Greek: ριζα γαρ παντων των κακων εστιν η φιλαργυρια ης τινες ορεγομενοι απεπλανηθησαν απο της πιστεως και εαυτους περιεπειραν οδυναις πολλαις
Wycliffe: For the rote of alle yuelis is coueytise, which summen coueitinge erriden fro the feith, and bisettiden hem with many sorewis.
Luther: Denn Geiz ist eine Wurzel alles Übels, welches hat etliche gelüstet, und sind vom Glauben irregegangen und machen sich selbst viel Schmerzen,
9. 2 Peter 2:2
2 Peter 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. [kjv]
και πολλοι εξακολουθησουσιν αυτων ταις ασελγειαις δι ους η οδος της αληθειας βλασφημηθησεται [gnt]
In 2 Peter 2:2, Peter talks of "
truth" be spoken of in an "
evil" way.
The word for "
evil" used here means to "
blaspheme".
This is not the same "
evil" as in being burdened down with the cares and concerns of this world.
10. 2 Peter 2:2
KJV: And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
Greek: και πολλοι εξακολουθησουσιν αυτων ταις απωλειαις ασελγειαις δι ους η οδος της αληθειας βλασφημηθησεται
11. Ephesians 6:13 Armor for the evil day
Paul talks of withstanding "
evil" by putting on the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6, the concluding chapter of Ephesians. Timothy was Bishop of the Church at Ephesus.
Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. [kjv]
δια τουτο αναλαβετε την πανοπλιαν του θεου ινα δυνηθητε αντιστηναι εν τη ημερα τη πονηρα και απαντα κατεργασαμενοι στηναι [gnt]
What is the "
evil day" which we need to "
withstand"? What if the "
evil day" consists of many small burdensome attacks in the form of cares and concerns that, through attrition, gradually take their toll on us? Putting on the full armor of God can help us withstand and remain "
standing" at the end. Notice that there is no mention of actually doing battle, just being prepared for battle and withstanding.
12. Ephesians 6:13
KJV: Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Greek: δια τουτο αναλαβετε την πανοπλιαν του θεου ινα δυνηθητε αντιστηναι εν τη ημερα τη πονηρα και απαντα κατεργασαμενοι στηναι
Latin: propterea accipite armaturam Dei ut possitis resistere in die malo et omnibus perfectis stare
13. Reflexive deception
2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. [kjv]
πονηροι δε ανθρωποι και γοητες προκοψουσιν επι το χειρον πλανωντες και πλανωμενοι [gnt]
mali … seductores … peius errantes … errorem … [v]
… ubilai … airzjai … airzjandans. [got]
Timothy was Bishop of Ephesus. In 2 Timothy 3:13, Paul warns Timothy of "
evil" men "
deceiving" and "
being deceived". The word for "
evil" appears to be that of being burdened down with the cares and concerns of this world.
Deception can be reflexive in that one may start to believe one's own lies. This often happens when, in deceiving others, one starts to believe the deception being used.
14. Vladimir Lenin
2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. [kjv]
πονηροι δε ανθρωποι και γοητες προκοψουσιν επι το χειρον πλανωντες και πλανωμενοι [gnt]
Notice that the evil men are deceiving others but, apparently, and reflexively, deceiving themselves. Can deception be done be burdening down people with burdens that may not be necessary?
A lie told often enough becomes the truth. Vladimir Lenin (Russian revolutionary and politician)
15. Genesis 2:9
Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. [kjv]
και εξανετειλεν ο θεος ετι εκ της γης παν ξυλον ωραιον εις ορασιν και καλον εις βρωσιν και το ξυλον της ζωης εν μεσω τω παραδεισω και το ξυλον του ειδεναι γνωστον καλου και πονηρου [lxx]
The
LXX (Septuagint) first uses the word for "
evil" as "
burdened" in Genesis. Might any of this have to do with being "
burdened" with, among other things, the cares and concerns of this world?
16. Genesis 2:9
KJV: And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Hebrew: ויצמח יהוה אלהים מן האדמה כל עץ נחמד למראה וטוב למאכל ועץ החיים בתוך הגן ועץ הדעת טוב ורע׃

17. Genesis 3:5

και ειπεν ο θεος ιδου αδαμ γεγονεν ως εις εξ ημων του γινωσκειν καλον και πονηρον και νυν μηποτε εκτεινη την χειρα και λαβη του ξυλου της ζωης και φαγη και ζησεται εις τον αιωνα [lxx]
20. Genesis 3:22
KJV: And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Brenton: And God said, Behold, Adam is become as one of us, to know good and evil, and now lest at any time he stretch forth his hand, and take of the tree of life and eat, and so he shall live forever—
21. Genesis 6:5
Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. [kjv]

και ωσφρανθη κυριος ο θεος οσμην ευωδιας και ειπεν κυριος ο θεος διανοηθεις ου προσθησω ετι του καταρασασθαι την γην δια τα εργα των ανθρωπων οτι εγκειται η διανοια του ανθρωπου επιμελως επι τα πονηρα εκ νεοτητος ου προσθησω ουν ετι παταξαι πασαν σαρκα ζωσαν καθως εποιησα [lxx]
24. Genesis 8:21
KJV: And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
