Overly burdened in the cares and concerns of evil
by RS  admin@creationpie.com : 1024 x 640

1. Overly burdened in the cares and concerns of evil
What is the meaning of "evil"? Has it changed over time? The word in the GNT (Greek New Testament) translated as "evil" in the KJV (King James Version) had a meaning of "burdened" or "constrained" or "afflicted" in a "bad" way. This word gradually generalized to the meaning of today.

One Greek word for "evil" in the GNT is the ancient Greek word "πονηρός""oppressed by toils" and comes from the ancient Greek word "πονέω""to toil, labor". In the GNT this word for "evil" is often paired with the word for "good". This brings into question the exact meaning of "good".

2. Burdensome evils
One Greek word for "evil" in the GNT is the ancient Greek word "πονηρός""oppressed by toils" and comes from the ancient Greek word "πονέω""to toil, labor".

The ancient Greek word "πόνος""work, toil". The ancient Greek word "πονηρός""enduring toil or suffering" and, in religion it means a somewhat nebulous "evil" (as that is the meaning theologians have given it).

3. Oppression
Reflexive opressionOne can be oppressed by others. One can oppress oneself.
Discuss: Discuss: Do you own the land you bought? Do you rent that land? (e.g., via property taxes, etc.) What about eminent domain?

4. Google
Google started their early business life with the motto "Don't be evil". That has been questioned over the years as to what exactly do they mean by "evil". Their stated goal at the time included the following.
Don't let advertisers buy their way to the top of search results, don't charge people to find information, don't spam people with banner ads on the homepage.
There may be other thins considered "evil" by some that are not considered so by Google.

To be clear, Google was the one to first bring up the "evil" word, not others.

5. Alphabet
When Google restructured under the name "Alphabet" this was modified from not doing a negative to doing a positive as in "Do the right thing". A similar question remains. What exactly do they mean by the "right thing"?

6. Other words for evil
There are other Greek words that are translated is "evil" in the KJV.

7. 1 Timothy 6:10 Root of evil
Verse route1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. [kjv]
Verse routeριζα γαρ παντων των κακων εστιν η φιλαργυρια ης τινες ορεγομενοι απεπλανηθησαν απο της πιστεως και εαυτους περιεπειραν οδυναις πολλαις [gnt]

Chess pieces
In 1 Timothy 6:10, Paul tells Timothy, Bishop of Ephesus, that the "love of money", literally "love of silver", is the root of all "evil".
The word used for "evil" is that of "bad" in general and of the "sick" in particular when Jesus is speaking in Matthew. This is not the same "evil" as in being burdened down with the cares and concerns of this world.

11. Ephesians 6:13 Armor for the evil day
Paul talks of withstanding "evil" by putting on the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6, the concluding chapter of Ephesians. Timothy was Bishop of the Church at Ephesus.
Verse routeEphesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. [kjv]
Verse routeδια τουτο αναλαβετε την πανοπλιαν του θεου ινα δυνηθητε αντιστηναι εν τη ημερα τη πονηρα και απαντα κατεργασαμενοι στηναι [gnt]

What is the "evil day" which we need to "withstand"? What if the "evil day" consists of many small burdensome attacks in the form of cares and concerns that, through attrition, gradually take their toll on us? Putting on the full armor of God can help us withstand and remain "standing" at the end. Notice that there is no mention of actually doing battle, just being prepared for battle and withstanding.

12. Ephesians 6:13

KJV: Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

13. Reflexive deception
Verse route2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. [kjv]
Verse routeπονηροι δε ανθρωποι και γοητες προκοψουσιν επι το χειρον πλανωντες και πλανωμενοι [gnt]
Verse routemaliseductorespeius erranteserrorem … [v]
Verse routeubilaiairzjaiairzjandans. [got]

Deceiver and deceivedTimothy was Bishop of Ephesus. In 2 Timothy 3:13, Paul warns Timothy of "evil" men "deceiving" and "being deceived". The word for "evil" appears to be that of being burdened down with the cares and concerns of this world.

Deception can be reflexive in that one may start to believe one's own lies. This often happens when, in deceiving others, one starts to believe the deception being used.

14. Vladimir Lenin
Verse route2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. [kjv]
Verse routeπονηροι δε ανθρωποι και γοητες προκοψουσιν επι το χειρον πλανωντες και πλανωμενοι [gnt]
Verse routeubilaiairzjaiairzjandans. [got]

Notice that the evil men are deceiving others but, apparently, and reflexively, deceiving themselves. Can deception be done be burdening down people with burdens that may not be necessary?

A lie told often enough becomes the truth. Vladimir Lenin (Russian revolutionary and politician)

The LXX (Septuagint) first uses the word for "evil" as "burdened" in Genesis. Might any of this have to do with being "burdened" with, among other things, the cares and concerns of this world?
