Building a house
1. Building a house
2. Matthew 7 Houses built on sand and on rock
3. Building a house
This page looks at building - whether it be a house or something else. This concept appears to be important in the parable of building a house on rock or sand.
In particular, Matthew appears to use a word for "build" that has a meaning more general than a house and more specialized for that passage.
Luke appears to use a word for "build" that is specific to a physical house in which one lives.
The passages have been discussed elsewhere (see above links) so this page concentrates on just these two words for "house".
Let us investigate.

The modern Greek version preserves these distinctions, but it is not clear as to the exact difference between the meaning of the words.
17. Luke
Let us investigate the use of these words.
Luke did use the word used by Matthew so it is not a case of not having the word in his vocabulary. Matthew used both words so the same reasoning applies to Matthew.
In particular, since dictionaries do not appear to distinguish the terms, let us look at how they are used in context, after some comments on the Latin and Russian versions.
18. Disclaimer
At this time (with the information gathered to this point), it appears that the word starting with omega (big "O") is an imperfect tense of the word starting with an omicron (little "o").
The following may help in such a distinction.
19. Luke 7:5
KJV: For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
Greek: αγαπα γαρ το εθνος ημων και την συναγωγην αυτος ωκοδομησεν ημιν

Wessex: Witodlice he lufeð ure þeode. & he us ure samnunge ge-tymbrede.

Gothic: unte frijoth thiuda unsara, jah swnagogein is gatimrida unsis.
Luther: denn er hat unser Volk lieb, und die Schule hat er uns erbauet.
